Prior to the introduction of Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), modelling and analyzing irregular data, particularly graphs, was thought to be the Achilles’ heel of deep learning. The core concept of GNNs is to find a representation by recursively aggregating the representations of a central node and those of its neighbor, and many GNNs’ designs have demonstrated its success. However, most only focus on using the first-order information between a node and its neighbors. In this paper, we introduce a central node permutation variant function through a frustratingly simple and innocent-looking modification to the core operation of a GNN, namely the Feature cOrrelation aGgregation (FOG) module, which learns the second-order information from feature correlation between a node and its neighbors in the pipeline. By adding FOG into existing variants of GNNs, we empirically verify this second-order information complements the features generated by original GNNs across a broad set of benchmarks. A tangible boost in the model’s performance is observed where the model surpasses previous state-of-the-art results by a significant margin while employing fewer parameters. e.g., 26.202% improvement on a real-world molecular dataset using graph convolutional networks.

Technology has influenced the hospitality industry, and the Internet of Things (IoT) has become a focus for sustainability, revenue growth, and problem-solving. This systematic review examined the opportunities and challenges of implementing IoT technology for a sustainable hospitality. Through a thorough analysis of 28 studies, we found that IoT technology has great potential to address sustainability issues in the hospitality industry. However, there are still significant challenges that need to be addressed for the successful implementation of IoT technology in the hospitality industry. Overall, this study highlights the potential of IoT technology to revolutionize the hospitality industry and make it more sustainable. Further research is needed to address the challenges of IoT implementation in the hospitality industry and to evaluate the effectiveness of IoT technology in achieving sustainability goals.

In this paper, a wireless networked control system with a local controller and remote controller is investigated. The observed states can be controlled directly by the local controller or controlled by the remote controller via an unreliable channel. In this scenario, we focus on a more realistic problem that the network might be faced with, that is, the lifespan of the network. However, this issue has received little attention. The lifespan of the network is considered in two-folds: 1) a stochastic sample and transmission scheme is adopted to reduce the power consumption and 2) the transmit power is optimized to guarantee the total transmission power limitation. In order to balance the control performance and the network lifespan, an optimization problem on communication and control co-design is formulated. In particular, we aim to jointly optimize the resource allocation and local/remote controls by minimizing the linear quadratic regulation (LQR) control cost under the constraints of transmit power and transmission probability. The results of the considered optimization problem show that there exists an optimal transmit power and the corresponding transmission probability that can minimize the control cost function. Numerical results are further provided to verify the theoretical analysis.

We introduce a novel framework for analyzing reinforcement learning (RL) in continuous state-action spaces, and use it to prove fast rates of convergence in both off-line and on-line settings. Our analysis highlights two key stability properties, relating to how changes in value functions and/or policies affect the Bellman operator and occupation measures. We argue that these properties are satisfied in many continuous state-action Markov decision processes. Our analysis also offers fresh perspectives on the roles of pessimism and optimism in off-line and on-line RL.

As China's steel production accounts for an increasing share of the world's output, the intelligent transformation of the steel industry is becoming increasingly urgent. To address issues such as low levels of mobile informationization in steel enterprises and the lack of an industry-specific mobile application platform, it is of great significance to establish a shared mobile application platform for the steel industry. In this paper, the requirements of the platform were analyzed, and the platform's functions were designed. The software design of the platform was then carried out, and the entire mobile application sharing platform was developed, effectively improving the production management efficiency of steel enterprises. The results indicate that the platform can effectively meet the needs of steel enterprises and has significant engineering significance. © 2023 Technical Committee on Control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

This paper explores the dynamics of rice production in the Chinese provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang and seeks to predict monthly rice production in the months of April through October using precipitation and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index as the predictor variables available. We utilize ridge and lasso regression models to predict the rice yield. Results indicate that a lasso regression model with an R2 value of 0.9991501 with an adjusted R2 value of 0.9991502 and a ridge regression model with an R2 value of 0.9865443 with an adjusted R2 value of 0.9870637 are possible. The lasso regression model does not account for all predictor variables while the ridge regression model does. Both models could be expanded upon to include more observations. © 2022 IEEE.

Sensor network localization (SNL) is a challenging problem due to its inherent non-convexity and the effects of noise in inter-node ranging measurements and anchor node position. We formulate a non-convex SNL problem as a multiplayer non-convex potential game and investigate the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium (NE) in both the ideal setting without measurement noise and the practical setting with measurement noise. We first show that the NE exists and is unique in the noiseless case, and corresponds to the precise network localization. Then, we study the SNL for the case with errors affecting the anchor node position and the inter-node distance measurements. Specifically, we establish that in case these errors are sufficiently small, the NE exists and is unique. It is shown that the NE is an approximate solution to the SNL problem, and that the position errors can be quantified accordingly. Based on these findings, we apply the results to case studies involving only inter-node distance measurement errors and only anchor position information inaccuracies.

The increasing demand for heterogeneous functionality in the automotive industry and the evolution of chip manufac-turing processes have led to the transition from federated to integrated critical real-time embedded systems (CRTESs). This leads to higher integration challenges of conventional timing predictability techniques due to access contention on shared resources, which can be resolved by providing system-level observability and controllability in hardware. We focus on the interconnect as a shared resource and propose AXI-REALM, a lightweight, modular, and technology - independent real-time extension to industry-standard AXI4 interconnects, available open-source. AXI-REALM uses a credit-based mechanism to distribute and control the bandwidth in a multi-subordinate system on periodic time windows, proactively prevents denial of service from malicious actors in the system, and tracks each manager's access and interference statistics for optimal budget and period selection. We provide detailed performance and implementation cost assessment in a 12nm node and an end-to-end functional case study implementing AXI-REALM into an open-source Linux-capable RISC-V SoC. In a system with a general-purpose core and a hardware accelerator's DMA engine causing interference on the interconnect, AXI-REALM achieves fair bandwidth distribution among managers, allowing the core to recover 68.2 % of its performance compared to the case without contention. Moreover, near-ideal performance (above 95 %) can be achieved by distributing the available bandwidth in favor of the core, improving the worst-case memory access latency from 264 to below eight cycles. Our approach minimizes buffering compared to other solutions and introduces only 2.45 % area overhead compared to the original SoC.

This paper examines the feasibility of demand-side cyberattacks on power grids launched via internet-connected high-power EV Charging Stations (EVCSs). By distorting power grid frequency and voltage, these attacks can trigger system-wide outages. Our case study focuses on Manhattan, New York, and reveals that such attacks will become feasible by 2030 with increased EV adoption. With a single EVCS company dominating Manhattan, compromising a single EVCS server raises serious power grid security concerns. These attacks can overload power lines and trip over-frequency (OF) protection relays, resulting in a power grid blackout. This study serves as a crucial resource for planning authorities and power grid operators involved in the EV charging infrastructure roll-out, highlighting potential cyberthreats to power grids stemming from high-power EVCSs. © 2023, CC BY.

Nonreciprocal field transformation with active acoustic metasurfaces

Field transformation, as an extension of the transformation optics, provides a unique means for nonreciprocal wave manipulation, while the experimental realization remains a significant challenge as it requires stringent material parameters of the metamaterials, e.g., purely nonreciprocal bianisotropic parameters. Here, we develop and demonstrate a nonreciprocal field transformation in a 2D acoustic system, using an active metasurface that can independently control all constitutive parameters and achieve purely nonreciprocal Willis coupling. The field-transforming metasurface enables tailor-made field distribution manipulation, achieving localized field amplification by a predetermined ratio. Interestingly, the metasurface demonstrates the self-adaptive capability to various excitation conditions and can extend to other geometric shapes. The metasurface also achieves nonreciprocal wave propagation for internal and external excitations, demonstrating a one-way acoustic device. Such a field-transforming metasurface not only extends the framework of the transformation theory for nonreciprocal wave manipulation, but also holds significant potential in applications such as ultra-sensitive sensors and nonreciprocal communication.
