During the coal seam drilling process, the drill string is subject to compressive deformation, compounded by unpredictable variations in formation hardness and borehole wall friction, leading to challenges in maintaining a stable feeding speed. This paper presents a novel approach by introducing uncertain parameters to describe the effects of formation hardness and borehole wall friction. Drill string axial movement model is modeled as a polyhedral system based on a lumped parameter representation. To meet industrial performance requirements, we design a robust $H_{\infty}$ controller to achieve consistent feeding speed control. Our simulation results demonstrate the controller's effectiveness in ensuring system stability despite fluctuations in formation hardness and drill string friction.

Geometric theory on large-scale and local determination of density dependence of a recovering large carnivore population

Density-dependent population growth is a feature of large carnivores like wolves (Canis lupus), with mechanisms typically attributed to resource (e.g. prey) limitation. Such mechanisms are local phenomena and rely on individuals having access to information, such as prey availability at their location. Using over four decades of wolf population and range expansion data from Wisconsin (USA) wolves, we found that the population not only exhibited density dependence locally but also at landscape scale. Superficially, one may consider space as yet another limiting resource to explain landscape-scale density dependence. However, this view poses an information puzzle: most individuals do not have access to global information such as range-wide habitat availability as they would for local prey availability. How would the population "know" when to slow their range expansion? To understand observed large-scale spatial density dependence, we propose a reaction-diffusion model, first introduced by Fisher and Kolmogorov, with a "travelling wave" solution, wherein the population expands from a core range that quickly achieves local carrying capacity. Early-stage acceleration and later-stage deceleration of population growth can be explained by early elongation of an expanding frontier and a later collision of the expanding frontier with a habitat boundary. Such a process does not require individuals to have global density information. We illustrate our proposal with simulations and spatial visualizations of wolf recolonization in the western Great Lakes region over time relative to habitat suitability. We further synthesize previous studies on wolf habitat selection in the western Great Lakes region and argue that the habitat boundary appeared to be driven by spatial variation in mortality, likely associated with human use of the landscape. © 2023, CC BY-SA.

Urban digital twin (UDT) technologies offer new opportunities for intelligent road inspection (IRI). This paper first reviews the state-of-the-art algorithms used in the two key components of UDT-based IRI systems: (1) multi-temporal, multi-dimension, multi-score, and heterogeneous road data acquisition, and (2) road distress detection. This paper then summarizes the UDTIRI competition, organized in conjunction with IEEE Bigdata 2022. Three-dimensional magnetic recording (3DMR) is a highly promising approach to achieving ultra-large data storage capacity in hard disk drives. One of the greatest challenges for 3DMR lies in performing sequential and correct writing of bits into the multi-layer recording medium. In this work, we have proposed a hierarchical recording architecture based on layered heat-assisted writing with a multi-head array. The feasibility of the architecture is validated in a dual-layer 3DMR system with FePt-based thin films via micromagnetic simulation. Our results reveal the magnetization reversal mechanism of the grains, ultimately attaining appreciable switching probability and medium signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for each layer. In particular, an optimal head-to-head distance is identified as the one that maximizes the medium SNR. Optimizing the system’s noise resistance will improve the overall SNR and allow for a smaller optimal head-to-head distance, which can pave the way for scaling 3DMR to more recording layers. A robust approach for cyber-security of industrial control systems (ICSs) that utilize programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to control critical industrial processes is demonstrated in this paper. For example, industrial water/chemical tank-based system, the liquid level sensor measurement output data may be compromised or manipulated by attackers, this can cause tank overflow, unregulated, or even malfunction. We proposed a general-purpose method called Dynamic Watermarking (DW) to secure ICSs. The basic idea of DW is that it adds a private random signal watermark on the control signal from the controller, then this watermark signal propagates through the plant and adequately converted then comes back to the attack detector. The attack detector at the actuator side can detect any malicious activity in the system in real time. The proposed method is experimentally tested and validated with several cyber-attack scenarios on a laboratory scale water tank level control system controlled by an Allen-Bradley Micro820 PLC. © 2023, CC BY-NC-SA.

Scene understanding in a contested battlefield is one of the very difficult tasks for detecting and identifying threats. In a complex battlefield, multiple autonomous robots for multi-domain operations are likely to track the activities of the same threat/objects leading to inefficient and redundant tasks. To address this problem, we propose a novel and effective object clustering framework that takes into account the position and depth of objects scattered in the scene. This framework enables the robot to focus solely on the objects of interest. Our system model incorporates YOLOv5 object detection model (ODM) and a pre-trained depth estimation model (DEM), whose outputs are fed into the KMeans Clustering (KM C) model. To train YOLOv5, we create our own battlefield dataset entitled “Common Objects in Battlefield (COBA)” which is split into a training dataset and a validation dataset using our customized object-aware stratified 7-fold cross-validation technique. We present the creation of minimum optimal clusters assuming the minimum number of available battlefield robots. These clusters exhibit accurate relative distances among objects, further validating the effectiveness of our approach for depth and object-aware clustering for scene understanding. Overall, our proposed approach facilitates efficient work division among robots, enhances decision-making capabilities, and helps to improve situational awareness in battlefield scenarios.

Vehicle Edge Computing (VEC) assists vehicles in performing latency-sensitive tasks by deploying resources near the vehicle. Designing an incentive mechanism for vehicles and VEC is crucial for realizing an intelligent transmission system. Considering the rationality of resource allocation, we model the utility functions of the VEC and the vehicle, which are used as optimization objectives. Specifically, the VEC allocates resources through pricing to maximize revenue under resource-constrained conditions, and the vehicle weighs payments against energy consumption to determine offloading and resource allocation. Given the vehicle movement and the variable channel state, we use the Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithm to solve these optimization problems. To reduce the learning difficulty of the DRL algorithm in complex VEC scenarios with multiple optimization variables, we propose a Pricing-Driven Resource Allocation (PDRA) algorithm that performs mobility-aware task offloading and calculates the optimal values of the optimization variables in the utility function of the vehicle to reduce the decision dimension. Furthermore, we also propose a DRL-based Pricing-Driven Dynamic Resource Allocation (DPDDRA) algorithm to achieve efficient resource allocation. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed algorithms can reduce the learning difficulty while maximizing VEC and vehicle revenue in complex VEC scenarios. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Multispectral images and leaf-clip measurements were used for evaluating the Chlorophyll (Chl) content on grapevine leaves through the use of vegetation indices. The multispectral leaf images were taken by a sensor onboard an UAS, which was placed over a table at a height of 70 cm. Images were radiometrically and geometrically processed to obtain accurate coregistered five band image stacks. Using a Kmeans segmentation, each leaf imaged in a multispectral image was automatically detected and the mean leaf reflectance values were used to compute three vegetation indices: NDVI, NDRE, and GLI. When compared to leaf-clip measurements, the results indicated that the NDRE index was the best predictor of Chl leaf content (R2=0.81). The obtained NDRE regression model can be used in UAS-based multispectral orthomosaics to generate canopy Chl maps at vine-row scale, which can assist vine growers in monitoring the spatial and temporal variability of grapevine vigor.

Hand Gesture Recognition from an Open-Set Perspective

Existing hand gesture recognition methods predominantly rely on a close-set assumption, which in essence limits the viewpoints, gesture categories, and hand shapes at test time to closely resemble those seen during training. This requirement is however rarely met in practice, as images are often captured from unconstrained viewpoints, with novel gestures and unseen hand shapes that can differ significantly from the training data. This motivates us to investigate an open-set hand gesture recognition problem, where hand gestures are still recognizable from unconstrained viewpoints, and novel gesture classes and hand shapes can be incrementally learned with just a few examples. To address this, we propose a viewpoint influence elimination network that extracts view-independent features, significantly improving performance in scenarios with unconstrained viewpoints. Moreover, a joint-weighted classification scheme is introduced to augment the cosine similarity metric for evaluating few-shot incremental learning of novel gestures and shapes. Finally, as existing hand gesture recognition datasets primarily adhere to the close-set assumption, a new hand gesture recognition dataset, OHG, is introduced in this paper, that includes a wide range of viewpoints, diverse gesture classes, and distinct hand shapes. Experimental hand gesture recognition results demonstrate the superior performance of our approach in both unconstrained viewpoint and few-shot incremental learning scenarios. Angular-Distance Based Channel Estimation for Holographic MIMO

Leveraging the concept of the electromagnetic signal and information theory, holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology opens the door to an intelligent and endogenously holography-capable wireless propagation environment, with their unparalleled capabilities for achieving high spectral and energy efficiency. Less examined are the important issues such as the acquisition of accurate channel information by accounting for holographic MIMO’s peculiarities. To fill this knowledge gap, this paper investigates the channel estimation for holographic MIMO systems by unmasking their distinctions from the conventional one. Specifically, we elucidate that the channel estimation, subject to holographic MIMO’s electromagnetically large antenna arrays, has to discriminate not only the angles of a user/scatterer but also its distance information, namely the three-dimensional (3D) azimuth and elevation angles plus the distance (AED) parameters. As the angular-domain representation fails to characterize the sparsity inherent in holographic MIMO channels, the tightly coupled 3D AED parameters are firstly decomposed for independently constructing their own covariance matrices. Then, the recovery of each individual parameter can be structured as a compressive sensing (CS) problem by harnessing the covariance matrix constructed. This pair of techniques contribute to a parametric decomposition and compressed deconstruction (DeRe) framework, along with a formulation of the maximum likelihood estimation for each parameter. Then, an efficient algorithm, namely DeRe-based variational Bayesian inference and message passing (DeRe-VM), is proposed for the sharp detection of the 3D AED parameters and the robust recovery of sparse channels. Finally, the proposed channel estimation regime is confirmed to be of great robustness in accommodating different channel conditions, regardless of the near-field and far-field contexts of a holographic MIMO system, as well as an improved per
