Neural manifolds summarize the intrinsic structure of the information encoded by a population of neurons. Advances in experimental techniques have made simultaneous recordings from multiple brain regions increasingly commonplace, raising the possibility of studying how these manifolds relate across populations. However, when the manifolds are nonlinear and possibly code for multiple unknown variables, it is challenging to extract robust and falsifiable information about their relationships. We introduce a framework, called the method of analogous cycles, for matching topological features of neural manifolds using only observed dissimilarity matrices within and between neural populations. We demonstrate via analysis of simulations and in vivo experimental data that this method can be used to correctly identify multiple shared circular coordinate systems across both stimuli and inferred neural manifolds. Conversely, the method rejects matching features that are not intrinsic to one of the systems. Further, as this method is deterministic and does not rely on dimensionality reduction or optimization methods, it is amenable to direct mathematical investigation and interpretation in terms of the underlying neural activity. We thus propose the method of analogous cycles as a suitable foundation for a theory of cross-population analysis via neural manifolds. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

AXI-REALM: A Lightweight and Modular Interconnect Extension for Traffic Regulation and Monitoring of Heterogeneous Real-Time SoCs

The increasing demand for heterogeneous functionality in the automotive industry and the evolution of chip manufacturing processes have led to the transition from federated to integrated critical real-time embedded systems (CRTESs). This leads to higher integration challenges of conventional timing predictability techniques due to access contention on shared resources, which can be resolved by providing system-level observability and controllability in hardware. We focus on the interconnect as a shared resource and propose AXI-REALM, a lightweight, modular, and technology-independent real-time extension to industry-standard AXI4 interconnects, available open-source. AXI-REALM uses a credit-based mechanism to distribute and control the bandwidth in a multi-subordinate system on periodic time windows, proactively prevents denial of service from malicious actors in the system, and tracks each manager’s access and interference statistics for optimal budget and period selection. We provide detailed performance and implementation cost assessment in a 12nm node and an end-to-end functional case study implementing AXI-REALM into an open-source Linux-capable RISC-V SoC. In a system with a general-purpose core and a hardware accelerator’s DMA engine causing interference on the interconnect, AXI-REALM achieves fair bandwidth distribution among managers, allowing the core to recover 68.2 % of its performance compared to the case without contention. Moreover, near-ideal performance (above 95 %) can be achieved by distributing the available bandwidth in favor of the core, improving the worst-case memory access latency from 264 to below eight cycles. Our approach minimizes buffering compared to other solutions and introduces only 2.45 % area overhead compared to the original SoC. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

With the advancement of information technology in the recent decades, digital and online services have become essential components of everyday life in Europe. Montenegro is no different in this regard. However, as digital literacy in the country is still in a developing phase in comparison with most countries of the EU, a higher portion of its citizens may rely on assistive technical communication. In this paper, we provide a case study on the assistive technical communication of Montenegrin eServices. The work addresses the sectors of online banking, healthcare services, higher education, national administrative services, and utilities. Our findings highlight the diversity in terms of implemented assistive technical communication, and distinguish usage contexts on the level of adequacy. Yet as the functionalities of Montenegrin eServices are expected to gradually expand in the upcoming years, assistive technical communication must aim to handle the higher extents of service complexity. © 2023 IEEE.

The decarbonization of energy systems implies the further exploitation of renewable energy resources. To facilitate their integration into the existing systems, while also improving their efficiency, multi-energy systems could play a vital role, accompanied also by the integration of storage components. In such an approach, electricity, thermal energy and gas infrastructures collaborate to meet the overall energy demand. The modelling and optimization of such systems are complex, as multiple heterogeneous variables and parameters should be considered when designing the system and time-scheduling its operation. This paper presents an overview of modelling approaches in this framework. Moreover, storage potential that arises through the collaboration of multiple energy forms is introduced. To enhance the usage of such approaches by policymakers, dedicated tools must be developed, incorporating networks limitations and components constraints. © 2020 Institution of engineering and Technology. The emergence of intelligent applications and recent advances in the fields of computing and networks are driving the development of computing and networks convergence (CNC) system. However, existing researches failed to achieve comprehensive scheduling optimization of computing and network resources. This shortfall results in some requirements of computing requests unable to be guaranteed in an end-to-end service pattern, negatively impacting the development of CNC systems. In this article, we propose a distributed cooperative routing framework for the CNC system to ensure the deadline requirements and minimize the computation cost of requests. The framework includes trading plane, management plane, control plane and forwarding plane. The cross-plane cooperative end-to-end routing schemes consider both computation efficiency of heterogeneous servers and the network congestion degrees while making routing plan, thereby determining where to execute requests and corresponding routing paths. Simulations results substantiates the performance of our routing schemes in scheduling computing requests in the CNC system. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been proved as a promising technique to further improve the performance for both the communication and the sensing tasks in wireless networks. However, due to the complicated and dynamic interference circumstances, the performance of ISAC cannot be guaranteed. To provide some insights for keeping a sophisticated balance between communication and sensing with considering co-channel interference, the theoretical performance of ISAC is studied in this paper. First, an analytical system model is provided based on stochastic geometry. Second, the success serving probability (SSP) is defined for both the communication and the sensing tasks based on mutual information, which provided a unified analysis framework for ISAC. The tractable expressions of SSP are also derived. Finally, the simulation results are shown to verify the analytical results of SSP, which can provide some insights for the tradeoff between sensing and communication of ISAC.

Some animals exhibit multi-modal locomotion capability to traverse a wide range of terrains and environments, such as amphibians that can swim and walk or birds that can fly and walk. This capability is extremely beneficial for expanding the animal's habitat range and they can choose the most energy efficient mode of locomotion in a given environment. The robotic biomimicry of this multi-modal locomotion capability can be very challenging but offer the same advantages. However, the expanded range of locomotion also increases the complexity of performing localization and path planning. In this work, we present our morphing multi-modal robot, which is capable of ground and aerial locomotion, and the implementation of readily available SLAM and path planning solutions to navigate a complex indoor environment.

A tunable circularly polarized ferrite-based antenna array is proposed to estimate the direction of received signals without ambiguity using the applied magnetic bias to rotate the far-field phase pattern around the antenna boresight. The proposed structure can be implemented in a small area because of low coupling between antenna elements and it is capable of estimating the direction of arrival for signals coming from ±40° respect to the body coordinate of structure. This simple and compact direction finder structure is easy to fabricate and the proposed algorithm is frequency independent.

Terahertz (THz) communications is considered as one of key solutions to support extremely high data demand in 6G. One main difficulty of the THz communication is the severe signal attenuation caused by the foliage loss, oxygen/atmospheric absorption, body and hand losses. To compensate for the severe path loss, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna array-based beamforming has been widely used. Since the beams should be aligned with the signal propagation path to achieve the maximum beamforming gain, acquisition of accurate channel knowledge, i.e., channel estimation, is of great importance. An aim of this paper is to propose a new type of deep learning (DL)-based parametric channel estimation technique. In our work, DL figures out the mapping function between the received pilot signal and the sparse channel parameters characterizing the spherical domain channel. By exploiting the long short-term memory (LSTM), we can efficiently extract the temporally correlated features of sparse channel parameters and thus make an accurate estimation with relatively small pilot overhead. From the numerical experiments, we show that the proposed scheme is effective in estimating the near-field THz MIMO channel in THz downlink environments. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

To ensure the security of image information and facilitate efficient management in the cloud, the utilization of reversible data hiding in encrypted images (RDHEI) has emerged as pivotal. However, most existing RDHEI schemes suffer from lower security and limited embedding capacity. To tackle these challenges, we propose a reversible data hiding with secret encrypted image sharing and adaptive coding scheme. Specifically, in the encryption phase, we introduce an improved secret sharing (SS) encryption method based on the chinese remainder theorem for polynomials (CRTP). This method not only improves the security of encrypted images but also vacates a larger room for embedding. In the embedding phase, we introduce an adaptive coding embedding approach using XOR preservation (XORP) and huffman coding, which provides high embedding capacity. Experimental results and security analysis demonstrate that our proposed encryption method achieves optimal values in security indicators for encrypted images, such as information entropy, histograms, NPCR and UACI. The proposed embedding method is superior to some state-of-the-art schemes in terms of embedding capacity. Furthermore, in datasets BOSSBase and BOWS2, the average embedding rates of the proposed embedding approach can reach 2.1745 bpp and 2.0656 bpp, respectively. © 2025 IEEE.
