Cloud computing allows to move computing and storage components from individual systems into the cloud, which provides software and hardware services over the Internet. A collaborative application is among software services that can be provided by the cloud computing to enable collaboration among users from the same or different tenants. In this context, security of the shared resources in a collaborative session becomes an important issue that must be addressed. This paper proposes an approach that ensures access control to the shared resources in a collaborative session in single tenant environments. The suggested approach introduces new entities and relationships to support collaborative sessions in single-tenant environments. Finally, we validate this approach by an implementation in the SwiftStack environment. © 2015 IEEE.

Today collaborative applications may enable collaboration among users from the same or different tenants of a given cloud provider. During such collaborations, the participants need to access and use resources held by other collaborating users. These resources often contain sensitive data. They are meant to be shared only during specific collaborative sessions. A collaborative session is an abstract entity, comprising a set of users, called members of the session, playing the same or different roles. These users may have concurrent access to the shared objects during a session depending on their roles. In this work, we propose an approach that ensures access control to the shared resources in a collaborative session in multi-tenants environments. We suggest CRBAC, the Collaboration Role-based Access Control. CRBAC consists of an extended version of the RBAC model. CRBAC defines new entities to support access control in collaborative sessions. The suggested model has been implemented within Swift component in the open source cloud-computing platform OpenStack. © 2015 IEEE.

Cloud computing has become a widely used paradigm in many IT domains such as e-health. It offers several advantages to the users, e.g. elasticity, flexibility and the rapid sharing of a huge set of digital data. However, many security and privacy concerns still pose significant challenges. In particular, the most identified problem is how to enforce the user's security policy in the access control of the outsourced data. In fact, cloud environments does not provide facilities to support high level defined security policies. For instance, the swift storage component of openstack supports only fine grained access control to execute a specific action on a specific defined object. In this paper, we designed and implemented a middleware to provide high level security policies while using such swift fine grained primitives. An e-health collaborative application dedicated for remote diagnosis is used to illustrate the suggested approach. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper we propose a fast optimization algorithm for approximately minimizing convex quadratic functions over the intersection of affine and separable constraints (i.e., the Cartesian product of possibly nonconvex real sets). This problem class contains many NP-hard problems such as mixed-integer quadratic programming. Our heuristic is based on a variation of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), an algorithm for solving convex optimization problems. We discuss the favorable computational aspects of our algorithm, which allow it to run quickly even on very modest computational platforms such as embedded processors. We give several examples for which an approximate solution should be found very quickly, such as management of a hybrid-electric vehicle drivetrain. Our numerical experiments suggest that our method is very effective in finding a feasible point with small objective value;indeed, we see that in many cases, it finds the global solution.

Data aggregation is a key element in many applications that draw insights from data analytics, such as medical research, smart metering, recommendation systems and real-time marketing. In general, data is gathered from several sources, processed, and publicly released for data analysis. Since the considered data might contain personal and sensitive information, special handling of private data is required. In this paper, we present a novel distributed privacy-preserving data aggregation protocol, called ADiPA. It relies on anonymization techniques for protecting personal data, such as k-anonymity, l-diversity and t-closeness. Its purpose is to allow a set of entities to derive aggregate results from data tables that are partitioned across these entities in a fully decentralized manner while preserving the privacy of their individual sensitive inputs. ADiPA neither relies on a trusted third party nor on cryptographic techniques. The protocol performs accurate aggregation when communication links and nodes do not fail. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Wireless, high-bandwidth data transfer gains increasing significance with a wider adoption of high-quality video streaming on mobile devices. Technologies enabling such data transfer (e.g., 802.11 or LTE) can adapt dynamically to changing conditions, which allows data transfers in a reliable way. However, applications have little or no influence on how those underlying systems execute their adaptations. Yet, in applications such as video streaming, this could provide important clues on what requirements are relevant for data delivery. In this demonstration, we present a system that allows application-defined underlay control to use such potentials in a mobile scalable video based streaming scenario by combining Android smartphones with software-defined radios (SDRs) for advanced physical layer control.

Towards a Decentralized OSN for a Privacy-preserving e-health System

e-health could be defined as the cost-effective and secure use of information and communication technologies in support of health systems, including healthcare related services and monitoring at both the local site and at a distance. Challenges still need to be resolved to build reliable, secure, and efficient e-health platforms with great flexibility. Recently, social networks have seen a growing importance in different applications and could play a prominent role in healthcare. Online Social Networks (OSN) offer new possibilities such as easy access to medical data anytime from anywhere. Due to the sensitivity of health data exchanged over such networks, a special attention need to be paid to security and privacy aspects of these data. The use of existing centralized OSNs raises the big brother problem. Moreover, the centralized architectures of OSNs are not scalable and have a single point of failure. In this work, we suggest a layered architecture while promoting the usage of decentralized design to ensure the scalability and the privacy of an OSN-based e-health system.

The need for a solution capable of identifying individuals from a distance, possibly wearing a disguise and in a crowded and busy environment is steadily increasing in many homeland security applications. The use of face recognition techniques has unique advantages when compared to other biometric methodologies - face images can be obtained from a distance and without the cooperation of the subject. A recent example demonstrating the growing need for such solution are the videos released by some terrorist organizations where the suspect's face is occluded with only the eyes being visible. Research has yielded several state-of-the-art algorithms but their accuracy is greatly lowered in the presence of various factors. Face recogition with arbitrary large face off-the-plane rotation remains one very challenging and open research problem. In order to build better face recognition algorithms, it is important to identify and analyze what and how factors affect the accuracy of said algorithms so these methods can be improved and made more robust. In our previous work we presented how factors such as image registration, number and type of training templates and the presence of varying amount of partial face information that can be used to improve the performance of three very popular widely used face recognition algorithms. In this paper, we examine how using multi-channel color images instead of their one-channel grayscale/color composite improves face recognition accuracy in the challenging case when face arbitrary large off-the-plane rotation is present. We demonstrate the improvement to face recognition accuracy through the very popular and widely used Eigenface-based, Fisherface-based and Direct Correlation-based algorithms. Our findings and experimental results with the data, show that when using frontal-facing images as external test images with frontal-facing images as training set images, the additional information contained in the multi-channel color images does

Mobile data traffic, particularly mobile video, grows at an unprecedented pace. Despite recent advances at the physical layer, today's wireless network infrastructure cannot keep up with this growth. This is partially due to the missing flexibility to adapt the physical layer continuously to best support both application level as well as network requirements. In this paper we show how to harness the flexibility of advanced physical layers in practice. We designed and implemented a research platform that provides a flexible application-centric physical layer for Android smartphones using software-defined radios (SDRs) as radio interfaces. Our solution allows applications to define flows and apply per-flow settings that are mapped into distinct physical layer settings. As a proof-of-concept and for testbed evaluation, we implemented our system together with a mobile video streaming application. The latter uses a Motion-JPEG based lightweight scalable video codec (SVC) to generate incremental data flows. We show that our system maximizes video quality at the receiver's side, while keeping the energy consumption at the transmitter at a minimum. Our solution demonstrates that jointly optimizing network traffic and application quality is feasible in practice using a flexible physical layer processing approach.
