Historically, a large number of small and cheaper sensors are deployed to form a sensor network. This paper provides rationale behind using an aggregate logical sensor unit (ALSU) as a building block in a Wireless Sensory Information network (WSIN). In this architecture, a single ALSU is composed of many off-the-shelf sensor nodes in the manner similar to the Beowulf cluster concept. The highly capable, cost effective and flexible ALSUs built in this manner from several smaller physical sensor nodes, would enable high computation power and built-in reliability for sensor applications. The objective of this paper is to provide an alternative where energy and computation is not a limiting factor in order to achieve the operational objectives of WSIN applications. This paper highlights critical issues that need to be addressed in developing a framework where each ALSU could have the capability to perform required operations as dictated by an underlying application

IETF Mobile Internet protocol version 6 and its fast handover protocol are proposals for handling routing of IPv6 packets to mobile nodes that have moved away from their home network. To do this, each time a mobile node moves to a new location, it configures and confirms its temporal IP address. In this paper, we study the impact of the address configuration and confirmation procedure on the their IP handover latency. We first argue that the current strategies for them are unnecessarily slow, hampering the use of current proposals for real-time traffic. We present a new scheme which can be a substitute of the current strategies. The underlying objective of our scheme is to completely eliminate the latency taken by the address configuration and confirmation from the whole handover latency. Further, a mathematical analysis is developed to show the benefits of our scheme. In this analysis, various parameters are discussed to analyze the existing proposals, while our approach focuses on the reduction of handover latency.

We present an active network-based approach in order to improve the performance of mobile transactions. This approach employs preemptive resume scheduling mechanism which reduces queuing delays involved in the processing of mobile transactions at each network node. Such reduction of queuing delay significantly improves performance of mobile transactions given the heavy network traffic and the lower network bandwidth. We have conducted several experiments using analytical modelling approach in order to determine the impact of priority scheduling mechanism on the performance of mobile transactions. Experiments show significant performance improvements of the proposed approach over existing approaches of mobile transactions. It has also been shown that the proposed approach is robust in that it can be applied to improve the performance of current mobile transaction approaches.

In this paper, a method for enhancing current QoS routing methods by means of QoS protection is presented. In an MPLS network, the segments (links) to be protected are predefined and an LSP request involves, apart from establishing a working path, creating a specific type of backup path (local, reverse or global). Different QoS parameters, such as network load balancing, resource optimization and minimization of LSP request rejection should be considered. QoS protection is defined as a function of QoS parameters, such as packet loss, restoration time, and resource optimization. A framework to add QoS protection to many of the current QoS routing algorithms is introduced. A backup decision module to select the most suitable protection method is formulated and different case studies are analyzed.

This paper proposes a novel real-time adaptive admission control (AAC) scheme with a desired quality of service (QoS) guarantee and high network utilization in high-speed networks. The QoS is given in terms of service delay, which is defined as the time it takes for a source to get admitted into the network after it initiates its intended request, packet/cell losses, and transmission delay (time taken to complete transmission from its initiation). AAC uses the following information- the available capacity from a novel adaptive bandwidth estimation scheme, a congestion indicator derived from a congestion controller, Peak Cell Rate (PCR) estimate from new sources, along with the desired QoS metrics, and outputs an 'admit' or 'reject' decision signal to the new sources while guaranteeing QoS and network utilization. Simulation results are presented by streaming ON/OFF and video data into the network. Results show that the proposed AAC admits significantly more traffic compared to other available admission control schemes thereby guaranteeing high network utilization while maintaining the desired QoS.

Improved Relevance Ranking in WebGather

The amount of information on the web is growing rapidly and search engines that rely on keyword matching usually return too many fow quality matches. To improve search results, a challenging task for search engines is how to effectively calculate a relevane ranking for each web page. This paper discusses in what order a search engine should return the URLs it has produced in response to a user's query so as to show more relevant pages first. Emphasis is given on the ranking functions a-dopted by WebGather that take link structure and user popularity factors into account. Bxperimental results are also presented to evaluate the proposed strategy.

In this paper, first studied are the distribution characteristics of user behaviors based on log data from a massive web search engine. Analysis shows that stochastic distribution of user queries accords with the characteristics of power-law function and exhibits strong similarity, and the user' s queries and clicked URLs present dramatic locality, which implies that query cache and 'hot click' cache can be employed to improve system performance. Then three typical cache replacement policies are compared, including LRU, FIFO, and LFU with attenuation. In addition, the distribution character-istics of web information are also analyzed, which demonstrates that the link popularity and replica pop-ularity of a URL have positive influence on its importance. Finally, variance between the link popularity and user popularity, and variance between replica popularity and user popularity are analyzed, which give us some important insight that helps us improve the ranking algorithms in a search engine.
