mobile ad hoc networks are a type of mobile network that functions without any fixed infrastructure. This new mobility context is highly dynamic. One of the weaknesses of ad hoc networks is node configuration. The configuration issue in MANET consists in assigning IP addresses to mobile nodes and dealing with the dynamic behavior of the network. To complete node configuration, new solutions prove to be necessary. Several solutions have been proposed in the literature. However, these approaches have many weaknesses. This paper proposes an autoconfiguration protocol for MANET (APM), which is based on direct configuration of new nodes and on centralized control of the configuration service. The APM considers node arrivals, node departures, and network partitioning and merge. Theoretical computation and simulation results show that APM has low latency and low overhead compared to most configuration methods based on conflict detection.

the IEEE 802.11e standard has been introduced recently for providing quality of service (QoS) capabilities in the emerging wireless local area networks. This standard introduces a contention window based enhanced distributed channel access (EDCA) technique that provides a prioritized traffic to guarantee the minimum bandwidth needed for time critical applications. However, the EDCA technique resets statically the contention window of the mobile station after each successful transmission. This static behavior does not adapt to the network state hence reduces the network usage and results in bad performance and poor link utilization whenever the demand for link utilization increases. This paper proposes a new adaptive differentiation technique for IEEE 802.11e wireless local area networks that takes into account the network state before resetting the contention window. The performance of the proposed technique is evaluated compared to the original differentiation techniques of the IEEE 802.11a and IEEE 802.11e standards. Preliminary results show that the proposed adaptive technique enhances the channel utilization and increases throughput.

This paper proposes a model for caching database data in mobile ad-hoc networks through caching the queries and their responses. The approach makes a distinction between the queries and their responses and caches them on separate mobile nodes. This method is driven by the fact that queries do not become invalid unless when the design of the database entities changes while data changes depending on the application that feeds information into the database. The architecture we use is hierarchical and employs three types of designated nodes: a query directory (QD), service manager (SM), and caching node (CN). The one or more QDs are responsible for caching the queries and are assigned and supervised by the SM that also oversees the mobility activities and the availability of nodes in the network and makes "managerial" decisions accordingly, including appointing backup nodes. With this model, any node that joins the ad hoc network will either contribute services to other nodes (willingness to become an SM, a QD, or a CN) or consume services offered by other nodes. This model attempts to coordinate the query executing and query caching mechanisms in a seamless manner while maintaining minimal communication among nodes. We present preliminary results of a model that was simulated using the NS-2 software and show the viability of the proposed approach.

In switched single beam directional antenna model, broadcasting is achieved by sequentially steering the antenna beam across all pre-defined directions resulting in a sweeping delay. In this paper, we study the suggested techniques to alleviate the broadcast storm problems in ad hoc networks with directional antennas, point out their shortcomings, and propose two new schemes, namely, the new enhanced directional flooding (NEDF) and the probabilistic relay broadcasting (PKB). We thoroughly compare the performance of these protocols with present directional broadcast schemes including omni directional flooding over six, twelve and eighteen antenna beam models. The results indicate that directional broadcasting provides excellent connectivity in the regions of sparse density as compared to omni directional broadcasting.

This paper addresses the issue of deafness in directional antennas for wireless ad hoc networks. Deafness is caused when a node X repeatedly attempts to communicate with node Y but is unsuccessful, because Y is presently tuned to some other antenna beam. In this paper, we first outline the different factors which contribute to such deafness in directional antennas and its significant impact on network performance. We then propose two schemes to overcome deafness scenarios which are transparent to the underlying directional MAC protocol in use. In addition, we also claim that IEEE 802.11 short retry limit (SRL) needs a special handling in directional environment because of the presence of deafness. We have done a detailed performance evaluation of our schemes with different directional MAC protocols running over switched beam antennas and the initial results are found to be very promising.

This paper presents an architecture based on mobile agent technology for retrieving prices of a specific item among many distributed merchant sites. We introduce two collaboration strategies that we implemented and tested: communication through blackboard and inter-agent communication. Empirical performance study was made, based on measurements of response time and induced network load, in the best and worst case scenarios. We also tested the scalability of the system with respect to the number of involved agents. Results show that collaboration between agents gives better performance than non-collaboration and each collaboration strategy is recommended for particular specifications.

This paper proposes to model each cell of future wireless networks as a G/G/c/c queueing system. As such a model has not been explicitly addressed in the literature, we apply maximum entropy principles to evaluate both traffic distribution and blocking probability within each cell. Analysis of numerical results enables to specify the conditions under which the system offers good quality of service in terms of blocking probability. More specifically, such an analysis reveals that coefficient of variation of call arrivals has more impact over the blocking probability than coefficient of variation of channel holding time.

The deregulated electricity industry is characterized by structural change and strategic behaviors of market participants. There is a need of a novel model for medium and long term planning that could include games theoretical assumptions as well as other more complex assumptions. This paper proposes a new agent-based model designed to support decentralized planning activities in electricity supply industry, with a certain level of flexibility. In this model, the expansion planning method is developed around a multiagent simulation system where the interactions among agents in electricity market are simulated. An example is given to illustrate the proposed model.

This paper proposes a real-time remote sensing distributed architecture to help monitor waste-water level inside a pumping station for the sewerage system. This solution takes advantage of remote sensing principles to get information from urban infrastructure elements. Our solution essentially uses a video camera coupled with a distributed application programmed in Java with storage and image processing capabilities. Two algorithms have been used to detect the edge of the images and a third one has been developed for wastewater level estimation. The experimentation shows that the use of video and image processing in real-time is cost-efficient and greatly improves our knowledge of the monitoring conditions, while conventional methods with sensors give much less information.

This paper proposes a novel constraint-based optimization model and a novel search strategy for optimizing the design of a 3G UMTS access network. The model concerns finding a set of sites for locating RNCs, and at the same time optimally assigning node Bs to the selected RNCs. All these choices must satisfy a set of constraints and optimize a set of objectives. Computational results show that the model and the search strategy are highly efficient. Optimal solutions are always obtained for small or medium sized problems. For large sized problems, the final results are on average within 5.77 % to 7.48 % of the lower bounds.
