This paper presents a 3D emotional facial animation synthesis approach based on the Factored Conditional Restricted Boltzmann Machines (FCRBM). Facial Action Parameters (FAPs) extracted from 2D face image sequences, are adopted to train the FCRBM model parameters. Based on the trained model, given an emotion label sequence and several initial frames of FAPs, the corresponding FAP sequence is generated via the Gibbs sampling, and then used to construct the MPEG-4 compliant 3D facial animation. Emotion recognition and subjective evaluation on the synthesized animations show that the proposed method can obtain natural facial animations representing well the dynamic process of emotions. Besides, facial animation with smooth emotion transitions can be obtained by blending the emotion labels.

Although significant success has been achieved in fine-grained visual categorization, most of existing methods require bounding boxes or part annotations for training and test, resulting in limited usability and flexibility. To conquer these limitations, we aim to automatically detect the bounding box and parts for fine-grained object classification. The bounding boxes are acquired by a transferring strategy which infers the locations of objects from a set of annotated training images. Based on the generated bounding box, we propose a multiple-layer Orientational Spatial Part (OSP) model to generate a refined description for the object. Finally, we employ the output of deep Convolutional neural Network (dCNN) as the feature and train a linear SVM as object classifier. Extensive experiments on public benchmark datasets manifest the impressive performance of our method, i.e., Classification accuracy achieves 63.9% on CUB-200-2011 and 75.6% on Aircraft, which are actually higher than many existing methods using manual annotations.

Spatial-keyword queries on road networks are receiving increasing attention with the prominence of location-based services. There is a growing need to handle queries on road networks in distributed environments because a large network is typically distributed over multiple machines and it will improve query throughput. However, all the existing work on spatial keyword queries is based on a centralized setting. In this paper, we develop a distributed solution to answering spatial keyword queries on road networks. Example queries include "find locations near a supermarket and a hospital," and "find Chinese restaurants within 500 meters from my current location." We define an operation for answering such queries and reduce the problem of answering a query into computing a function of such operations. We propose a new distributed index that enables each machine to independently evaluate the operation on its network fragment in a distributed setting. We theoretically prove the space optimality of the proposed index technique. We conduct experiments with a distributed setting. Experimental results demonstrate the promising performance of our method.

How do we manage to step into another person's shoes and eventually derive the intention behind observed behavior? We propose a connectionist neural network (NN) model that learns self-supervised a prerequisite of this social capability: it adapts its internal perspective in accordance to observed biological motion. The model first learns predictive correlations between proprioceptive motion and a corresponding visual motion perspective. When a novel view of a biological motion is presented, the model is able to transform this view to the closest perspective that was seen during training. In effect, the model realizes a translation-, scale-, and rotation-invariant recognition of biological motion. The NN is an extended adaptive resonance model that incorporates self-supervised error backpropagation and parameter bootstrapping by neural noise. It segments and correlates relative, visual and proprioceptive velocity kinematics, gradually refining the emerging representations from scratch. As a result, it is able to adjust its internal perspective to novel views of trained biological motion patterns. Thus, we show that it is possible to take the perspective of another person by correlating proprioceptive motion with relative, visual motion, and then allowing the adjustment of the visual frame of reference to other views of similar motion patterns. © 2014 Proceedings of the 36th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive science Society, CogSci 2014. This paper describes the Antinomyra System that participated in the BioASQ Task 2a Challenge for the large-scale biomedical semantic indexing. The system can automatically annotate MeSH terms for MEDLINE citations using only title and abstract information. With respect to the official test set (batch 3, week 5), based on 1867 annotated citations out of all 4533 citations (June 6, 2014), our best submission achieved 0.6199 in flat Micro F-measure. This is 9.8% higher than the performance of official NLM solution Medical Text Indexer (MTI), which achieved 0.5647 in flat F-measure.

The multi-tier architecture is prevalently adopted by cloud applications, such as the three-tier web application. It is highly desirable for both tenants and providers to provide virtual networks in an efficient and elastic way, where tenant applications can automatically scale in or out with varying workloads and providers can accommodate as many requests as possible in the underlying network. However, due to potential conflicts between efficiency and elasticity, it is challenging to achieve these two goals simultaneously in abstracting tenant requirements and designing corresponding provisioning algorithms. In this paper, we propose an efficient and elastic virtual network provisioning solution called Easy Alloc, which is comprised of an elasticity-aware abstraction model and a virtual network provisioning algorithm. To accurately capture the tenant requirement and maintain the provisioning simplicity for providers, the elasticity-aware model enables two types of decoupling, i.e., Always-on VMs for normal load and on-demand VMs for dynamic scaling, and the bandwidth requirement of each VM for intra- and inter-tier communications. Then we formulate the virtual network provisioning as an overhead minimization problem, where the objective simultaneously considers the bandwidth and elasticity overhead. Due to the NP-completeness of this problem, we leverage two heuristics, slot reservation and tier iteration, to obtain an efficient algorithm. Extensive simulation results show that compared with a typical elasticity-agnostic method under a heavy load, Easy Alloc enables a 9% increase of request acceptance rate and a 16.8% improvement of the successful extension rate. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work targeting at the elastic virtual network provisioning.

Player classification method based on the tradition histograms lacks color spatial information, which leads to low classification performance, and, in addition, it needs priori template information. According to this, a novel player classification algorithm based on digraph was proposed in this paper. Firstly, the candidate players were extracted through the main color under the HSV Model Space of Color and equal-area rectangle partitioning strategy was adopted to partition the image. Secondly, HSV color space was quantified in each block and color histogram was extracted as color features. Thirdly, the distance among images was calculated according to the color features and the digraph was generated based on the distance matrix. Finally, the player classification was implemented by classifying the vertexes of digraph. Experimental results show that the proposed method, without priori template information, is an effective way of classifying the players positioned around the classification boundary with an average classification accuracy of 98.82%. Compared with traditional method, the proposed method has a remarkable promotion on classification effect.

Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks are crucial for organisms. Many research efforts have thus been devoted to the study on the topological properties PPI networks. However, existing studies did not always report consistent results on the topological properties of PPI networks. This situation is primarily caused by the incompleteness of current PPI datasets. To solve this problem, in this paper we revisited the topological properties of PPI networks from the perspective of PPI dataset evolution. Concretely, we used twelve PPI datasets of Arabidopsis thaliana from different BioGRID database versions, and compared the topological properties of PPI networks built from the twelve datasets. Our results show that as the dataset evolves, the PPI network becomes more and more complete, all considered topological properties seemingly converge to stable values, which possibly indicate the topological nature of the complete Arabidopsis thaliana PPI network. Such findings can not be obtained from a few datasets as used in the existing works.

Most existing language modeling approaches are based on the term independence hypothesis. To go beyond this assumption, two main directions were investigated. The first one considers the use of the proximity features that capture the degree to which search terms appear close to each other in a document. Another one considers the use of semantic relationships between words. Previous studies have proven that these two types of information, including term proximity features and semantic relationships between words, are both useful to improve retrieval performance. Intuitionally, we can use them in combination to further improve retrieval performance. Based on this idea, this paper propose a positional translation language model to explicitly incorporate both of these two types of information under language modeling framework in a unified way. In the first step, we present a proximity-based method to estimate word-word translation probabilities. Then, we define a translation document model for each position of a document and use these document models to score the document. Experimental results on standard TREC collections show that the proposed model achieves significant improvements over the state-of-the-art models, including positional language model, and translation language models. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.
