Printed circuit board layout inspection methods are mostly based on local geometric information, therefore they are well suited to the cellular neural networks (CNN) paradigm. The wire break, the wire and isolation width violation and an "H" type short circuits detector analogic algorithms were tested on a 20*22 CNN Universal Machine (CNNUM) chip working in the CNN Chip Prototyping System (CCPS) and on the CNN Engine Board (CNNEB), and the results were compared to the commercially available inspection systems.

Array computers can be useful in the solution of numerical spatiotemporal problems such as partial differential equations (PDEs). IBM has recently introduced the cell broadband engine (Cell BE) Architecture, which contains 8 identical vector processors in an array structure. In the paper the implementation of the 3-D Princeton Ocean Model on the Cell BE is discussed. The area/speed/power tradeoffs of our solution and different hardware implementations are also compared.

In the area of geophysical and mining engineering the solution of partial differential equations (PDE) has been one of the most important problems of mathematics for a long time. Inside that one of the most exciting fields is the simulation of geothermal processes which can be used in the everyday energy-management. In this contribution a CNN-UM simulation of water reinjection are presented. Unfortunately the three dimensional - or the coupled multi-layered - computational structure and space-variant templates do not make it possible to utilize the huge computing power of the analog CNN-UM chips. To improve the performance of our solution an emulated digital CNN-UM has been used

The large computing power of cellular neural networks (CNNs) is used to compute the transient response of a mechanical vibrating system. A basic question is how an inhomogeneous mechanical system can be computed by using different CNNUM (cellular neural net Universal Machine ) implementations. How complexity to time transformations were used in different CNNUM implementations, namely in software, in emulated digital CNN chips and in analog chips is discussed.

A digital folk song search and retrieval system with a hand gesture based interface is presented. Tillarom is a comprehensive collection of original Hungarian folk songs recorded using different technologies such as phonographs and/or stereo DAT cassettes. This digital archive contains professional quality metadata records as well as MIDI recordings for presenting the different types of clustered folk songs. An AJAX based search and retrieval interface was developed that can be used together with optically recognized Kodály's hand signs to formulate queries through a web browser. The appearance based recognition of hand gestures utilizes contour analysis and SVM based classification. We evaluated the performance of the recognition of hand signs and investigated the main problems of their usage in our system. Copyright 2006 ACM.

Array computers can be useful in the solution of numerical spatio-temporal problems such as the state equation of the CNN or partial differential equations (PDE). IBM has recently introduced the cell broadband engine (Cell BE) Architecture which contains 8 identical vector processors in an array structure. In the paper the implementation of CNN simulation kernel on the Cell BE is described. The simulation kernel is optimized, according to the special requirements of the Cell BE and can use linear and also nonlinear (piecewise linear) templates. The area/speed/power tradeoffs of our solution and different hardware implementations are also compared.

In this paper the parallel implementation of the Horn and Schunck motion estimation method in image sequences is presented, by using cellular neural networks (CNN). One of the drawbacks of the classical motion estimation algorithms is the computational time. The goal of the CNN implementation of the Horn & Schunck method is to increase the efficiency of the well-known classical implementation of this method, which is one of the most used algorithms among the motion estimation techniques. The aim is to obtain a smaller computation time and to include such an algorithm in motion compensation algorithms implemented using CNN, in order to obtain homogeneous algorithms for real-time applications in artificial vision or medical imaging

This paper presents an extended emulated digital retina model to compute two different retina channels in video real-time. The proposed emulated digital implementation of the two-channel retina model is discussed in three different points of view: processing speed, number of physical cells and accuracy. A real-time test environment with camera input and display output is going to be set up to analyze the retina model implementation on emulated digital CNN model by using a 6M gate equivalent FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array).
