The demand for automotive image sensors with high dynamic range(HDR) and increased resolution has prompted significant advancements in their development. Due to the demands of High Dynamic Range (HDR), modern automotive image sensors require up to 28 bits per pixel, surpassing the capacity of existing image transmission protocols. Hence, automotive image sensors employ a PieceWise Linear (PWL) companding, which offers efficient computation, albeit with the trade-off of data loss. In order to mitigate data loss, we propose a method to optimize the companding curve by leveraging sensor characteristics, including Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) profile and SNR drop at transition. Our method achieves higher Signal-to-Noise-and-Distortion (SNDR) up to 5.2 dB and image quality compared to conventional companding curves.
