The ITU-T SG15/Q2 has started a system-technology evaluation in support of next-generation of Passive Optical Networks (PON) beyond 50 Gbit/s. One candidate solution is a single-wavelength intensity-modulated and direct-detection scheme with a bit rate of 100 Gbit/s;a second wavelength could be added for 200 Gbit/s. In this paper, we evaluate transceiver parameters as well as their tolerance for chromatic dispersion introduced by the fiber facility for such a system. We validate in simulations that it is possible to successfully satisfy a 20 km fiber distance requirement baseline for 100 Gbit/s PONs using a combination of chirp-engineered transmitters, pre-amplified receivers, and applying advanced digital signal processing equalization. © 2024 IEEE.

Wireless communication has profoundly transformed the way we experience the world. For instance, at most events, attendees commonly utilize their smartphones to document and share their experiences. This shift in user behavior largely stems from the cellular network's capacity for communication. However, as networks become increasingly sophisticated, new opportunities arise to leverage the network for services beyond mere communication, collectively termed Beyond Communication Services (BCS). These services encompass joint communications and sensing, network as a service, and distributed computing. This paper presents examples of BCS and identifies the enablers necessary to facilitate their realization in sixth generation (6 G). These enablers encompass exposing data and network capabilities, optimizing protocols and procedures for BCS, optimizing compute offloading protocols and signalling, and employing application and device-driven optimization strategies. © 2024 IEEE.

Network Modularization, i.e., the refactoring of the functionalities of 5G Network Functions (NFs), will be an important tool to meet future requirements in the 6G System (6GS). In particular, via network modularization, it is possible to streamline the NF compositions and the inter-Nfinteractions. However, to achieve the highest possible efficiency without loss on inter-operability, we need a clear understanding of the different Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and modularization techniques which are required to achieve the necessary end-to-end performance. In this work, we investigate the KPIs, the modularization methods prioritized by the research community, and the industrial implications thereof. We also outline the or-chestration requirements for the successful integration of modules to 6GS and the one possible integration of quantum technology to solve the synchronization challenge.

Based upon trusted and confidential computing platforms, telecommunications systems must provide guaranteed security for the processes and data running atop them. This in turn requires us to provide trustworthy systems. The term trustworthy is poorly defined with corresponding misunderstanding and misapplication. We present a definition of this term, as well as others, demonstrate its application against certain telecommunications use cases and address how the learnings from ontologising these structures contribute to standardisation and the necessity for FAIR ontologies across telecommunications standards and hosting organisations. © 2023, CC BY.

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the 6G architecture, referred to as AI-native 6G architecture, signifies a transformative era for communication technology. Nevertheless, practical implementation encounters challenges including architectural complexities, data quality concerns, and operational difficulties in managing machine learning models, allocating resources, and implementing intent-based management. In this paper, we present a comprehensive approach to address these challenges in emerging 6G networks through AI. Our approach involves two steps: first, we identify impairments hindering progress, analyzing the importance of addressing operational challenges in Machine Learning Operations (MLOps), 6G evolution, and democratizing AI, while addressing interoperability issues and complexities in the translation of business intents into network configurations. Upon the analysis, we highlight AI enablers—architectural enhancements, MLOps, Data Operations (DataOps), AI as a Service (AIaaS), and intent-based management—as essential solutions for practical AI implementation in 6G networks. We conclude by stating that architectural improvements prioritize privacy, security, and data accuracy, while MLOps and DataOps optimize the management of the AI life cycle. Privacy-aware data collection and training employ federated learning and split learning, and AIaaS streamlines AI access, and intent based management with integrated AI enhances decision-making through advanced algorithms.

The proliferation of the use cases expected to be supported by 6G networks and the diversity of requirements associated with these use cases call for a dynamically adaptable 6G network architecture. The recent advances in network programmability technologies such as SDN, P4, and NFV offer a rich tool suite to design flexible and programmable networks. In this paper, we propose a framework for end-to-end programmability management for 6G networks that covers different network domains. We show how the framework can be integrated with state-of-the-art network management. The benefits of this programmability management framework are highlighted by show-casing two novel use cases that utilize network programmability in the transport and UE domains. The first application utilizes P4 language to program transport domain switches to enhance performance measurements and enable adaptive QoS handling, while the second use case describes how UE programmability facilitates dynamic compute offloading between UEs and Multi-Access Edge Computing resources.
