The goal of this research study was to develop a music therapy tool using a computer-generated harp which could provide users with visual, audio, and haptic feedback during interaction with the virtual instrument. Realistic 3D visual and haptic feedback was provided through immersion in a portable augmented reality-based system composed of a video see- through head mounted display (HMD) and a Sensable Phantom Omni haptic device. Users play the virtual harp by using the Phantom Omni haptic device to pluck or strum the strings of the harp. Users can also freely move the harp in the augmented reality environment to provide a more realistic experience, similar to that of playing a traditional musical instrument. The system will be used to provide interactive musical experiences and to develop motor skills among individuals with disabilities through music therapy. A virtual therapist feature was developed which can be used by a therapist without musical knowledge to observe a user during therapy exercises or by a user to engage in self-motivated therapy exercises outside the therapy room. With the virtual therapy feature, users can follow a simple pre-determined sequence of notes using color-coded strings. User testing was completed to study usability, therapeutic effectiveness, and patients' therapy motivation. Copyright © 2008 by ASME.

Work on the construction site is known to be inefficient due to workers spending much time waiting for materials, transporting materials and from frequent interruptions of tasks. Studies on the construction site typically use statistical measures to analyse the sampled data about work and such measures, while very useful, can overlook important features of the data. In this paper we apply a previously developed approach, derived from time geographical methods,to visually represent the sampled construction productivity data and show that this method may enable the analyst to better understand the distribution of activities, and how they are interrelated and dependent upon each other.

Retail space management is one of the more crucial challenges faced by retailers today with an ever ever- expanding volume of data to which they must refer when making decisions. Problems have emerged that are intractable using traditional means but for which interactive information visualization shows much promise. These problems or tasks are exploratory in nature and use temporal multivariate data. Department stores must maximize and optimize return on allocated retail space. Although product sales are readily available, the missing link for most retailers is a precise understanding of each store's layout in relation to its capacity and performance. This paper introduces a novel approach Visual Space Management (VSM) demonstrated with a multiple-linked view application (VisMT) that explores retail data related to space performance. VisMT integrates familiar information visualization representations and a 3D interactive layout of store floor plans with retail data sources. Parallel coordinates plot serves as a multivariate visual control panel in the coordinated system. Seasonally retail data analysis is performed simultaneously in linked views through time. Visual inquiry methods are supported for conditioned temporal multivariate data.

The voluminous nature of social scientific, spatial-temporal statistical databases calls for high interactive performance and creative integrated information and geo-visualization tools. A solution to this challenge can be found in the emerging visual analytics (VA), a science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces and innovative visualization and is now actively pursued by research groups worldwide. In this paper, we present a tool called "GeoAnalytics", based on the principles behind VA. Our objective is to define new suitable approaches and tools for exploring time variant and multivariate attributes simultaneous including a spatial dimension. We introduce parallel coordinates integrated with time series and trend graph that serves as the visual control panel for the application. Multivariate attribute dynamic queries can express simultaneously queries involving time varying spatial data. VA encourages the need to build a bridge between the advantages of both human perception and computer science technologies. The sense of immediacy and speed-of-thought interaction is achieved in our dynamically linked components and maximum allocation of screen area for visual displays that helps users stay focused on their work and shortens their time to enlightenment

Analysing multivariate data is a difficult task. Extensive interaction with the data is often necessary and, hence, the analysis can be quite time consuming. In this paper, we introduce a method to allow the user to simultaneously examine the relationships of a single dimension with many others in the data. The single dimension can then be interactively changed to allow the user to quickly examine all possible combinations. This method is achieved by extending the standard parallel coordinate approach to a 3D clustered multi-relational parallel coordinate representation (CMRPC). To aid this method, we use a technique called relation spacing which is used to position the axes according to how 'interesting' the different relations are. We also propose a number of interaction techniques to further facilitate the analysis process.

In this paper we discuss the prospects of using marker based Augmented Reality for context aware applications on mobile phones. We also present the UMAR, a conceptual framework for developing Ubiquitous Mobile Augmented Reality applications which consists of research areas identified as relevant for successfully bridging the physical world and the digital domain using Mobile Augmented Reality. A step towards this we have successfully ported the ARToolkit to consumer mobile phones running on the Symbian platform and present results around this. We also present three sample applications based on UMAR and future case study work planned. Copyright 2004 ACM.

Smartphones with built-in cameras are becoming ubiquitous. These devices couple a camera with communication and processing units and are increasingly capable of 3D rendering. We have conducted camera sensitivity test on current smartphones to evaluate in what extent they can be used for augmented reality (AR) using optical tracking.
