This paper presents a novel multi-perspective document revision task. In conventional studies on document revision, tasks such as grammatical error correction, sentence reordering, and discourse relation classification have been performed individually;however, these tasks simultaneously should be revised to improve the readability and clarity of a whole document. Thus, our study defines multi-perspective document revision as a task that simultaneously revises multiple perspectives. To model the task, we design a novel Japanese multi-perspective document revision dataset that simultaneously handles seven perspectives to improve the readability and clarity of a document. Although a large amount of data that simultaneously handles multiple perspectives is needed to model multi-perspective document revision elaborately, it is difficult to prepare such a large amount of this data. Therefore, our study offers a multi-perspective document revision modeling method that can use a limited amount of matched data (i.e., data for the multi-perspective document revision task) and external partially-matched data (e.g., data for the grammatical error correction task). Experiments using our created dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of using multiple partially-matched datasets to model the multi-perspective document revision task. © 2022 Proceedings - International Conference on Computational Linguistics, COLING. As one pillar of ntt’s IOWN (Innovative Optical and Wireless Network) vision, Digital Twin Computing aims to construct the world in a digital space. To this end, it is essential that data be obtained from people and things by sensors. However, advances in sensing technologies have created a new issue in which an increase in the number of data dimensions makes processing time longer, which makes it difficult to analyze and use collected data within a realistic period of time. Creating Smart Cities through Digital Twins

We describe our initiatives in creating smart cities using digital twin (DT) technology. In these Feature Articles on Urban DTC for Creating Optimized Smart Cities Attentive to the Individual, we first outline the concept of a totally optimized smart city. We then describe a variety of services that use digitalized data and artificial intelligence (AI), an integrated platform that achieves total optimization by interlinking those services, examples of services that link areas over a wide region, and the AI value platform that makes it easy to provide such cross-domain services. © 2024 Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.. Using Smart-store Behavior data to Optimize Sales Promotion

Implementation of information and communication technology in retail stores is advancing, with self-scan shops using smart carts and others that enable "empty-handed" purchasing without even going to a register. In such shops, we can obtain point-of-sale data including customer identifiers and behavior data such as movement flows within the store, and that enables us to understand a customer’s behavior leading to a purchase. This was not possible with conventional shops. This article introduces an initiative that uses such data to create a digital twin of a store, which is used for sales promotion or more efficient operations. © 2024 Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.. Refining Solar-power-generation Plans to Achieve Stable Power Supply by Predicting Total Solar Irradiance

To reduce the environmental burden, it is necessary to adjust the supply and demand of electricity so that the proportion of renewable energy is increased. For solar-power generation, which is widely used, total solar irradiance is the main variable used in power-generation planning because it is strongly correlated with the amount of electricity generated. However, measurement and prediction of total solar irradiance produce values with large errors, leading to large errors in power-generation plans, which in turn cause problems in terms of stable power supply and the cost of adjusting supply and demand. In light of these issues, we developed a technology that combines weather information and power-generation results to predict total solar irradiance with high accuracy in a manner that makes it possible to refine solar-power-generation plans. © 2024 Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.. Software system developments generally involve writing codes. As code reduction is not considered, with accelerated software development, the number of code increases, which in turn increases the system management load. In this study, we pursue an analysis process to determine the necessity of each code present in the software. To handle a large amount of code, we utilize a probabilistic model checking technique. The analysis process identifies the trends in code usage by estimating probabilistic reachability. We implemented a prototype tool for the analysis. Results of two case studies in the real world demonstrate that the tool set has a possibility of extracting components that can be eliminated in the projects. © 2024 Knowledge Systems Institute Graduate School. Estimating the True Brightness of Each Pixel by Using Noise in a Video Image

The key to decoding a coded video in such a manner that the decoded video is as clear as possible is to remove noise contained in the original video, which also improves coding efficiency. Many researchers studying imaging have investigated this noise-removal problem;as a result, it is now said that random noise can be reduced to the limit at which only shot noise, a type of noise resulting from the random arrival of photons, remains. Although noise is generally an undesirable phenomenon, research that exploits it to achieve various effects is attracting attention. Seishi Takamura, visiting senior distinguished researcher at ntt computer and data science laboratories, developed a technology that uses fluctuations (noise) in the brightness of light to estimate brightness beyond the upper limit of digital values. We asked him about this technology and his stance as a researcher: "question everything," "don’t be content," "never say no," and "let it lie." © 2024 Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp.. Index access is one of the dominant performance factors in transactional database systems. Many systems use a B+tree or one of its variants to handle point and range operations. This access pattern has room for performance improvement. Firstly, point operations can potentially be processed in O(1) with a hash table. Secondly, to ensure serializability of transactions, range operations incur overhead from phantom avoidance techniques that involve additional processing or synchronization, such as an extra traversal of the B+-tree. To address these issues, we propose a hybrid index architecture, Griffin. For point operations, Griffin has a hash table that provides access paths in O(1) time, along with a B+-tree. For phantom avoidance, Griffin employs a precision locking method, which does not involve additional traversal of the B+-tree. Despite its hybrid architecture, Griffin transparently provides linearizable operations and an interface of a single database index. We built a Griffin index combining a hash table and BwTree. Compared to a baseline index that is composed of a BwTree only, it achieves up to 3.1x higher throughput in a point operation dominant workload, and up to 5.4x higher throughput in a range operation dominant workload. © 2024 IEEE.
