The rotation symmetric bosonic code (RSBC) is a unified framework of practical bosonic codes that have rotation symmetries, such as cat codes and binomial codes. While cat and binomial codes achieve the breakeven point in which the coherence time of the encoded qubits exceeds that of unencoded qubits, the state preparation fidelity needs to be improved for practical quantum computing. Concerning this problem, we investigate the framework of symmetry expansion, a class of quantum error mitigation that virtually projects the state onto the noise-free symmetric subspace by exploiting the system's intrinsic symmetries and postprocessing of measurement outcomes. Although symmetry expansion has been limited to error mitigation of quantum states immediately before measurement, we successfully generalize symmetry expansion for state preparation. Then, we consider two types of stabilization: photon number and phase stabilization. Photon number stabilization can be performed by leveraging the rotation operators. On the other hand, the phase errors can be suppressed via the extension towards phase direction by leveraging the recently proposed projective squeezing method. To implement our method, we use an ancilla qubit and a randomly generated controlled gate between the bosonic code states and the ancilla qubit. Our novel error mitigation method will significantly enhance computation accuracy in the near-term bosonic quantum computing.

We investigate the compression sensitivity [Akagi et al., 2023] of lex-parse [Navarro et al., 2021] for two operations: (1) single character edit and (2) modification of the alphabet ordering, and give tight upper and lower bounds for both operations (i.e., we show Θ(log n) bounds for strings of length n). For both lower bounds, we use the family of Fibonacci words. For the bounds on edit operations, our analysis makes heavy use of properties of the Lyndon factorization of Fibonacci words to characterize the structure of lex-parse. © Yuto Nakashima, Dominik Köppl, Mitsuru Funakoshi, Shunsuke Inenaga, and Hideo Bannai.

This paper proposes a novel local reproduction method called “personalized sound zone,” which can confine a sound field by using a combination of software processing and hardware innovations that remove loudspeaker enclosures from an array, and discusses the development of a headrest loudspeaker prototype unit not to leak sound into adjacent seats for airline seating. The proposed method is based on a two-channel fixed beamforming algorithm that does not require extensive equipment, and its prototype is compact enough to fit in a seat headrest. The personalized sound zone software algorithm is implemented on a DSP circuit board and processed in real time.

LineairDB: Transactional Key-Value Storage with Epoch-based Synchronization

Demands on the performance of database systems continue to increase. In state-of-the-art database systems, the storage engine is a major source of performance bottlenecks, and it is important to harness parallelism by avoiding mutual exlusion mechanisms such as locks. In this paper, we outline the design of LineairDB, a transactional storage engine open-sourced by the authors. LineairDB employs epoch-based synchronization to all components, which harnesses a high degree of multicore parallelism in handling data structures. We describe how each component of LineairDB is optimized by epoch-based synchronization. Our experimental results show that the optimizations in LineairDB lead to about a 75x increase in throughput in YCSB benchmark. In addition, we implement LineairDB-storage-engine, which is a plugin for MySQL. It achieved up to 5x better throughput compared to InnoDB, which is MySQL’s default storage engine. On the other hand, the approach of epoch-based synchronization affects both the performance characteristics and the consistency that the database provides to users. Microtask programming enables software engineers such as free-lancers and part-time employees to contribute to software projects even when they can not spend much time on them. It decomposes software design into small, self-contained specifications. The decomposed specifications enable them to complete implementation and review task in a short time. In this paper, we empirically investigate the time required for software engineers to complete microtasks in an industrial setting and explore their perceptions of microtask programming by investigating two industrial projects using it. The projects were carried out in different companies and differed in the employment of the engineers. One contracted 9 freelancers, and the other asked for 8 part-time contributions from employees at work on other projects. We conducted a survey and a focus group with the engineers. Based on the development data of the case studies, we found that almost all microtasks were completed in less than four pomodoro repetitions, namely about two hours in the pomodoro technique. These data shows that engineers who cannot work full-time on a project can undertake microtasks if they can spare one-third of their work day. We also examine how engineers who are employees experience microtask programming similarly and differently from *** ConceptsSoftware and its engineering → Application specific development environments.

COVID-19 has transformed face-to-face software development into distributed development (e. g., remote work). While the company authors belong to studies microtask programming, an open source software (OSS) -like development, as a solution to employ distributed development, a prior study reports a challenge: online communication in microtask programming takes longer; such lengthy communication discourages developers and affects their completion of assigned tasks. OSS, however, is successfully developed using online communication, such as issues. Hence, we have a question: how does OSS address the online communication challenge? In this experience report, we answer this question based on an empirical study on OSS communication. We found that (1) OSS prefers burst communication similar to face-to-face development, and (2) attracting developers’ attention may be a possible solution. Based on the findings, we discuss the direction of future studies to achieve better online communication in microtask programming in the company. The main contributions of this report are (1) to empirically reveal the actual communication times in OSS and (2) to show how an empirical approach helps industrial collaborators.

This technical report introduces the results of sentiment analysis of artifacts in requirements engineering phase. These artifacts contain descriptions of requirements and functions for the development target such as software product and solution. The descriptions of requirements reflect user needs and problems are described based on the analysis of users’ dissatisfaction with the current situation and their expectations. On the other hand, the description of functions describes the behavior of the system and the interaction between the system and humans. Therefore, we apply sentiment analysis to requirements artifacts which are created in an exercise for university students. We, then, investigate how the sentiment of the descriptions in the artifacts are changed. Sentiment analysis is performed using Google Cloud’s Natural Language API on the descriptions included in the artifacts such as customer journey maps and user story mappings. From the results of the application, we confirmed that the sentiment score of each artifact was different. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors. As companies run their business (e.g., sales, pro-curement), they conduct a set of business processes that include activities and flows connecting them. There exist an enormous number of patterns of business processes, or process-patterns. This industrial paper proposes a new technique, RP2A (Rare Process-Pattern Analysis), to examine process-patterns for finding operational problems such as compliance violations. The technique analyzes system execution data (= event log and user information) stored in the system related to the processes. By a combination of process-pattern search and activity search, RP2A discovers potential problem process-patterns in terms of execution frequency. We also report an industrial case study carried out using the technique. By analyzing the system execution data corrected from the 6-month system operation, we identified all 373 process-patterns, and 32 potential problem process-patterns out of them. Then, 4 domain experts in the industry verified the 32 process-patterns and found that 18 process-patterns, namely more than half of them (56% (=18/32)) contain actual problems. Almost problems are violations of internal policies which even the domain experts did not recognize. The technique succeeded in finding a kind of unknown problems in the business processes.

Highly realistic 3D displays that can reproduce object images to look like physical objects are utilized for natural and correct remote operation in industrial scenes. Therefore, we developed a visually equivalent light field 3D (VELF3D) display that can produce highly realistic, accurate images with a high resolution and a smooth, accurate motion parallax. However, the observation distance is slightly long, and users cannot reach the displayed images. Therefore, we aim to develop a tablet-computer-type VELF3D display that enables users to touch the displayed objects. The display viewpoint density has been increased to achieve a shorter observation distance while maintaining the display depth range. Because higher resolutions are required for a close observation distance and increased display viewpoints, we aimed to improve effective resolution using almost the same pixel pitch display panel. Therefore, we built a prototype that combines a vertical red, green, blue (RGB) stripe display panel and a parallax barrier with subpixel width slits. We confirmed effective resolution improvement by tiny subjective tests. This method also helps increase the depth range of the display when it is observed from a normal distance.
