Monolayer graphene was deposited on a Si wafer substrate decorated with SiO₂ nanoparticles (NPs) and then exposed to aryl radicals that were generated in situ from their diazonium precursors. Using micro-Raman mapping, the aryl radicals were found to selectively react with the regions of graphene that covered the NPs. The enhanced chemical reactivity was attributed to the increased strain energy induced by the local mechanical deformation of the graphene. © The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The physical properties of Sr14−xCaxCu24O41 are determined by the hole distribution between the edge-shared CuO2 chain and the corner-shared Cu2O3 two-leg ladder, but inconsistent results on the hole distribution were obtained in various experimental works in recent decades. In this work we reinvestigate the hole distribution by soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Cu L3 edge. By comparing with the pure ladder and the pure chain systems, we can unambiguously distinguish between the hole distributions in the chain and the ladder. We have found that there are 5.3 holes in the edge-shared chain and 0.7 holes in the corner-shared ladder on average for Sr14Cu24O41. Upon Ca substitution, the holes gradually transfer from the edge-shared chain to the corner-shared ladder, and there are up to 1.21 holes in the corner-shared ladder for Sr1.8Ca12.2Cu24O41.

Impact of Phase Stability on the Corrosion Behavior of the Austenitic Candidate Materials For NNSWI

The nuclear Waste Management program at Lawrence Livermore National laboratory is responsible for the development of the waste package design to meet the nuclear Regulatory Commission licensing requirements for the Nevada nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) Project. The metallic container component of the waste package is required to assist in providing substantially complete containment of the waste for a period of up to 1000 years. Long term phase stability of the austenitic candidate materials (304L and 316L stainless steels and alloy 825) over this time period at moderate temperatures (100–250°C) can impact the mechanical and corrosion behavior of the metal barrier. A review of the technical literature with respect to phase stability of 304L, 316L and 825 is presented. The impact of martensitic transformations, carbide precipitation and intermediate (σ. χ, and η) phase formation on the mechanical properties and corrosion behavior of these alloys at repository relevant conditions is discussed. The effect of sensitization on intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) of each alloy is also addressed. A summary of the impact of phase stability on the degradation of each alloy in the proposed repository environment is included.

Tungsten metal slugs were fabricated via Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) of powdered metals at temperatures ranging from 1575 K to 1975 K and hold times of 5 minutes to 30 minutes, using powders with an average diameter of 7.8 μm. Sintered tungsten specimens were found to have relative densities ranging from 83% to 94% of the theoretical density for tungsten. Consolidated specimens were also tested for their Vickers Hardness Number (VHN), which were plotted as a function of relative density. Concurrently, tungsten and rhenium powders with average respective diameters of 0.5 μm and 13.3 μm were pre-processed either by High-Energy-Ball-Milling (HEBM) or by homogeneous mixing to yield W-25at.%Re mixtures. The powder batches were sintered at temperatures of 1975 K and 2175 K for hold times up to 60 minutes yielding relative densities in the range 94% to 97%. The combination of HEBM and sintering showed a significant decrease in the intermetallic phases compared to that of the homogenous mixing and sintering.

X-ray microfluorescence imaging technique has been used as a significant tool in order to investigate minerals contents in some kinds of materials. The aim of this study was to evaluate the elemental distribution of calcium and zinc in bone substitute materials (nanohydroxyapatite spheres) and cortical bones through X-Ray Microfluorescence analysis with the increment of Synchrotron Radiation in order to evaluate the characteristics of the newly formed bone and its interface, the preexisting bone and biomaterials by the arrangement of collagen fibers and its birefringence. The elemental mapping was carried out at Brazilian Synchrotron Light laboratory, Campinas - Sao Paulo, Brazil working at D09-XRF beam line. Based on this study, the results suggest that hydroxyapatite-based biomaterials are biocompatible, promote osteoconduction and favored bone repair. © 2011 IEEE.
