A particle size effect to magnetic properties of the mother material of the La-based high-Tc superconducting oxides, La2CuO4 (LCO), was investigated using muon spin relaxation (μSR) measurement in the zero-field condition. A decrease in the Nèel temperature was observed in LCO nanoparticles with a decreasing particle size. The magnetic ground state was found to be an antiferromagnetically ordered state as observed in the bulk state. Two muon sites were confirmed, which showed different temperature dependence of internal fields. It is guessed that oxygen molecules are trapped among nanoparticles, forming a domain-like structure [1]. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The combination of urbanization and global warming leads to urban overheating and compounds the frequency and intensity of extreme heat events due to climate ***,the risk of urban overheating can be mitigated by urban green-blue-grey infrastructure(GBGI),such as parks,wetlands,and engineered greening,which have the potential to effectively reduce summer air *** many reviews,the evidence bases on quantified GBGI cooling benefits remains partial and the practical recommendations for implementation are *** systematic literature review synthesizes the evidence base for heat mitigation and related co-benefits,identifies knowledge gaps,and proposes recommendations for their implementation to maximize their *** screening 27,486 papers,202 were reviewed,based on 51 GBGI types categorized under 10 main *** GBGI(green walls,parks,street trees)have been well researched for their urban cooling ***,several other GBGI have received negligible(zoological garden,golf course,estuary)or minimal(private garden,allotment)*** most efficient air cooling was observed in botanical gardens(5.0±3.5℃),wetlands(4.9±3.2℃),green walls(4.1±4.2℃),street trees(3.8±3.1℃),and vegetated balconies(3.8±2.7℃).Under changing climate conditions(2070–2100)with consideration of RCP8.5,there is a shift in climate subtypes,either within the same climate zone(e.g.,Dfa to Dfb and Cfb to Cfa)or across other climate zones(e.g.,Dfb[continental warm-summer humid]to BSk[dry,cold semi-arid]and Cwa[temperate]to Am[tropical]).These shifts may result in lower efficiency for the current GBGI in the *** the importance of multiple services,it is crucial to balance their functionality,cooling performance,and other related co-benefits when planning for the future *** global GBGI heat mitigation inventory can assist policymakers and urban planners in prioritizing effective interventions to reduce the risk of urban overheating,fi

ABSTRACTABSTRACTTerrestrial gamma radiation dose (TGRD) rates were measuredin situfrom different locations in Katsina State, Nigeria, using a portable radiation survey metre based on geological formations and soil types. The measured TGRD rates ranged from 45 to 271 nGyh–1with an average value of 116 ± 1 nGyh–1. Geological formation (silicified sheared rock) and soil type (lithosols and ferruginous crusts and ferruginous tropical soils) appeared to have the highest mean TGRD values of 163 and 134 nGyh–1with sandstone geological formation and alluvial and hydromorphic soils having the lowest TGRD with values of 80 and 61 nGyh–1, respectively. One way ANOVA results shows that the tested null hypothesis was rejected. Thus, indicating that there exists a strong relationship between the various geological formations, soil types with the measured TGRD values based on the alternate hypothesis. Human health hazard indices like annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE), lifetime outdoor annual equivalent dose, and relative excess lifetime outdoor cancer risk associated with the mean TGRD of the study area were also calculated and found to be 0.711, 9.955 mSv, and 5.79 × 10–4, respectively. These values were higher than the world average values but favourable compared with the safety limits recommended by ICRP.

The Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) nuclear Sector and US Department of Energy Light Water Reactor Sustainability program are committed to engaging in research and development endeavors to address materials aging issues specific to long term operation of light water power reactors. To this effect, EPRI launched an industry initiative to develop nondestructive evaluation systems for online monitoring of existing cracks in light water reactor primary coolant loop piping and components. One of the goals of this initiative is to develop a sensor system (or systems) that can determine nondestructively if cracks are growing or arrested and, in the case of the former, to characterize their growth rates. A missing component of this initiative is an experimental assessment of how sensors and adhesive couplants will perform in service when exposed to chronic energetic neutron radiation, particularly at the primary coolant loop hot and cold leg dissimilar metal welds, which join the primary loop piping to the reactor pressure vessel and reside in the vicinity of the reactor core. The objective of this experimental study was to determine how ultrasonic transducers and adhesive couplants perform when exposed to irradiation in a test reactor to simulate and accelerate in-service exposure. To achieve this objective, the signal stability of piezoelectric transducers and performance of adhesive couplants as a function of accumulated fast neutron fluence were characterized by collecting ultrasonic data in-situ during irradiation. Of particular interest were the ultrasonic signal quality and time decay of the amplitude of acoustic reflections as a function of fast neutron fluence. The results of the study showed that, of the 8 transducer/substrate sample assemblies tested, only 3 generated usable ultrasonic signals through the conclusion of the irradiation campaign. This study presents an efficient utilization strategy for reed pyrolysis products, focusing on furfural as the primary product, along with acetic acid, wood vinegar, and phenol-rich oil. Based on this, the Energy-Integration Resource Utilization (EIRU) process, which incorporates a multi-stage quenching method, is developed. This process effectively removes most water from the main organic compounds during condensation by harnessing the internal heat of the high-temperature pyrolysis product stream from the reactor. Compared to conventional pyrolysis process, the EIRU can reduce energy consumption by 50 %. Life cycle assessment reveals that the EIRU process significantly reduces key environmental impact factors, including 90.15 kg CO2 eq. reduction in Global Warming Potential (GWP), 22.95 kg 1,4-DB eq. reduction in Human Toxicity Potential (HTP), and 1.86 kg Sb eq. reduction in Abiotic Depletion Potential (ADP). Additionally, the EIRU process yields a profit of 151.69 USD/ton, which is 14.81 USD/ton higher than the conventional process. This study highlights the superior environmental and economic performance of the EIRU process, positioning it as a more sustainable and profitable solution for reed pyrolysis. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

It is widely recognized that exposure to X-rays during XPS analysis can decompose different materials, resulting in mass loss and changes in chemical composition. These effects are evident in the near-edge X-ray absorption structure spectra of dicarboxylic acid powders, posing a fundamental limit to sensitivity for surface chemical analysis. Understanding the chemistry and kinetics of radiation decomposition is necessary for the accuracy and validation of XPS analysis on dicarboxylic acids. Here we evaluate the impact of X-ray exposure on characterizing chemical changes in three different dicarboxylic acids with varying aliphatic carbon chain lengths. From this investigation we propose straightforward correlations relating the tendency for radiation-induced decomposition based on the chemical structure of the acids. We employed two types of spectra, those acquired with minimal interaction (snapshot) and high-resolution spectra obtained over an extended period, to show that normal analysis conditions are likely to degrade these type of materials. © 2023, The Authors. Correlations between panoramic imagery and gamma-ray background in an urban area

When searching for radiological sources in an urban area, a vehicle-borne detector system will often measure complex, varying backgrounds primarily from natural gamma-ray sources. Much work has been focused on developing spectral algorithms that retain sensitivity and minimize the false positive rate even in the presence of such spectral and temporal variability. However, information about the environment surrounding the detector system might also provide useful clues about the expected background, which if incorporated into an algorithm, could improve performance. Recent work has focused on extensive measuring and modeling of urban areas with the goal of understanding how these complex backgrounds arise. This work presents an analysis of panoramic video images and gamma-ray background data collected in Oakland, California by the Radiological Multi-sensor Analysis Platform (RadMAP) vehicle. Features were extracted from the panoramic images by semantically labeling the images and then convolving the labeled regions with the detector response. A linear model was used to relate the image-derived features to gamma-ray spectral features obtained using Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) under different regularizations. We find some gamma-ray background features correlate strongly with image-derived features that measure the response-adjusted solid angle subtended by sky and buildings, and we discuss the implications for the development of future, contextually-aware detection algorithms. Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is a well-known amorphous thin film solid electrolyte that has been extensively studied in the last three decades. Despite the promises to pair with Li metal anode and various cathode materials, the presence of rigid substrate and LiPON's unique amorphous, air-sensitive nature set limitations to comprehensively understand its intrinsic properties for future development and applications. This work demonstrates a methodology to synthesize LiPON in a freestanding form that exhibits remarkable flexibility and a Young's modulus of ~33 GPa. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results with unprecedented high signal-to-noise ratio could be obtained with such freestanding LiPON (FS-LiPON), revealing the Li/LiPON interface bonding environments quantitatively and a well-defined glass transition temperature for LiPON. Combining interfacial stress and a seeding layer, FS-LiPON demonstrates a uniform and fully dense Li metal deposition without the aid of external pressure. Such a FS-LiPON film offers new opportunities for fundamental study of LiPON material and associated interfaces, and provides perspectives for interface engineering in bulk solid-state battery. Utilization of ornamental rock waste as a catalytic support for α-MoO₃ in biodiesel production

This study aimed to explore the use of ornamental stone waste as a support for the α-MoO₃ catalyst to develop efficient and sustainable heterogeneous systems for biodiesel production. The catalysts were characterized using physicochemical techniques including X-ray diffraction with Rietveld refinement, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with EDS, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption/desorption (BET method), particle size distribution, ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (TPD-NH₃), magnetic measurements, and gas chromatography to analyze simultaneous transesterification/esterification (TES) reactions and quantify methyl and ethyl esters. XRD patterns revealed crystalline phases such as mica-biotite, ferro-tschermakite, albite, quartz, and iron-magnesium silicates-components of the catalytic support-as well as orthorhombic α-MoO₃ phases, also confirmed in the heterogeneous systems. FTIR and Raman analyses showed characteristic vibrational bands, while SEM images displayed irregular agglomerates, corroborated by TEM. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms indicated mesoporous structures with surface areas ranging from 0.615 to 3.87 m²/g. Particle size analysis showed D₅₀ values between 5.02 and 20.00 μm, with total acidity ranging from 77.0 to 245 µmol/g of NH₃. Magnetic tests indicated ferrimagnetic behavior. The catalytic performance confirmed the effectiveness of the waste as a support for α-MoO₃, particularly in the system containing 40% Mo ions (40%σ-MoO₃:Waste), which achieved conversions between 78% and 95%. These findings highlight the environmental and technological potential of the studied catalysts, reinforcing the economic viability and ecological relevance of reusing industrial waste in the sustainable production of biodiesel from waste oils.
