The production of opposite-charge W-boson pairs in proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV is measured using data corresponding to 3.16 fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider in 2015. Candidate W-boson pairs are selected by identifying their leptonic decays into an electron, a muon and neutrinos. Events with reconstructed jets are not included in the candidate event sample. The cross-section measurement is performed in a fiducial phase space close to the experimental acceptance and is compared to theoretical predictions. Jet substructure observables have significantly extended the search program for physics beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider. The state-of-the-art tools have been motivated by theoretical calculations, but there has never been a direct comparison between data and calculations of jet substructure observables that are accurate beyond leading-logarithm approximation. Such observables are significant not only for probing the collinear regime of QCD that is largely unexplored at a hadron collider, but also for improving the understanding of jet substructure properties that are used in many studies at the Large Hadron Collider. This Letter documents a measurement of the first jet substructure quantity at a hadron collider to be calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithm accuracy. The normalized, differential cross-section is measured as a function of log10 ρ2, where ρ is the ratio of the soft-drop mass to the ungroomed jet transverse momentum. This quantity is measured in dijet events from 32.9 fb−1 of √s = 13 TeV proton–proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector. The data are unfolded to correct for detector effects and compared to precise QCD calculations and leading-logarithm particle-level Monte Carlo simulations. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. A search for heavy resonances decaying into a Higgs boson (H) and a new particle (X) is reported, utilizing 36.1 fb−1 of proton–proton collision data at √s = 13 TeV collected during 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The particle X is assumed to decay to a pair of light quarks, and the fully hadronic final state XH → qq¯0bb¯ is analysed. The search considers the regime of high XH resonance masses, where the X and H bosons are both highly Lorentz-boosted and are each reconstructed using a single jet with large radius parameter. A two-dimensional phase space of XH mass versus X mass is scanned for evidence of a signal, over a range of XH resonance mass values between 1 TeV and 4 TeV, and for X particles with masses from 50 GeV to 1000 GeV. All search results are consistent with the expectations for the background due to Standard Model processes, and 95% CL upper limits are set, as a function of XH and X masses, on the production cross-section of the XH → qq¯0bb¯ resonance. Measurements of longitudinal flow correlations are presented for charged particles in the pseudorapidity range ∣η∣ −1 and 470 µb−1 of Pb+Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 and 5.02 TeV, respectively, recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. It is found that the correlation between the harmonic flow coefficients vn measured in two separated η intervals does not factorise into the product of single-particle coefficients, and this breaking of factorisation, or flow decorrelation, increases linearly with the η separation between the intervals. The flow decorrelation is stronger at 2.76 TeV than at 5.02 TeV. Higher-order moments of the correlations are also measured, and the corresponding linear coefficients for the kth-moment of the vn are found to be proportional to k for v3, but not for v2. The decorrelation effect is separated into contributions from the magnitude of vn and the event-plane orientation, each as a function of η. These two contributions are found to be comparable. The longitudinal flow correlations are also measured between vn of different order in n. The decorrelations of v2 and v3 are found to be independent of each other, while the decorrelations of v4 and v5 are found to be driven by the nonlinear contribution from v22 and v2v3, respectively. The modification of the production of J/ψ, ψ(2S), and Υ(nS) (n = 1, 2, 3) in p+Pb collisions with respect to their production in pp collisions has been studied. The p+Pb and pp datasets used in this paper correspond to integrated luminosities of 28 nb−1 and 25 pb−1 respectively, collected in 2013 and 2015 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, both at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of 5.02 TeV. The quarkonium states are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel. The yields of J/ψ and ψ(2S) are separated into prompt and non-prompt sources. The measured quarkonium differential cross sections are presented as a function of rapidity and transverse momentum, as is the nuclear modification factor, RpPb for J/ψ and Υ(nS). No significant modification of the J/ψ production is observed while Υ(nS) production is found to be suppressed at low transverse momentum in p+Pb collisions relative to pp collisions. The production of excited charmonium and bottomonium states is found to be suppressed relative to that of the ground states in central p+Pb collisions. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with at least two hadronically decaying tau leptons is presented. The analysis uses a dataset of pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1, recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. No significant deviation from the expected Standard Model background is observed. Limits are derived in scenarios of χ˜ +1χ˜ −1 pair production and of χ˜ ±1χ˜ 02 and χ˜ +1χ˜ −1 production in simplified models where the neutralinos and charginos decay solely via intermediate left-handed staus and tau sneutrinos, and the mass of the τ˜L state is set to be halfway between the masses of the χ˜ ±1 and the χ˜ 01. Chargino masses up to 630 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level in the scenario of direct production of χ˜ +1χ˜ −1 for a massless χ˜ 01. Common χ˜ ±1 and χ˜ 02 masses up to 760 GeV are excluded in the case of production of χ˜ ±1χ˜ 02 and χ˜ +1χ˜ −1 assuming a massless χ˜ 01. Exclusion limits for additional benchmark scenarios with large and small mass-splitting between the χ˜ ±1 and the χ˜ 01 are also studied by varying the τ˜L mass between the masses of the χ˜ ±1 and the χ˜ 01. A search for the supersymmetric partners of quarks and gluons (squarks and gluinos) in final states containing hadronic jets and missing transverse momentum, but no electrons or muons, is presented. The data used in this search were recorded in 2015 and 2016 by the ATLAS experiment in √s = 13 TeV proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1. The results are interpreted in the context of various models where squarks and gluinos are pair-produced and the neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. An exclusion limit at the 95% confidence level on the mass of the gluino is set at 2.03 TeV for a simplified model incorporating only a gluino and the lightest neutralino, assuming the lightest neutralino is massless. For a simplified model involving the strong production of mass-degenerate first- and second-generation squarks, squark masses below 1.55 TeV are excluded if the lightest neutralino is massless. These limits substantially extend the region of supersymmetric parameter space previously excluded by searches with the ATLAS detector. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A search is conducted for new resonances decaying into a WW or WZ boson pair, where one W boson decays leptonically and the other W or Z boson decays hadronically. It is based on proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV in 2015 and 2016. The search is sensitive to diboson resonance production via vector–boson fusion as well as quark–antiquark annihilation and gluon–gluon fusion mechanisms. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to the Standard Model backgrounds. Several benchmark models are used to interpret the results. Limits on the production cross section are set for a new narrow scalar resonance, a new heavy vector-boson and a spin-2 Kaluza–Klein graviton. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This Letter presents the measurement of differential cross sections of isolated prompt photons produced in association with a b-jet or a c-jet. These final states provide sensitivity to the heavy-flavour content of the proton and aspects related to the modelling of heavy-flavour quarks in perturbative QCD. The measurement uses proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the LHC in 2012 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 20.2 fb−1. The differential cross sections are measured for each jet flavour with respect to the transverse energy of the leading photon in two photon pseudorapidity regions: |ηγ | 1.37 and 1.56 |ηγ | 2.37. The measurement covers photon transverse energies 25 ETγ 400 GeV and 25 ETγ 350 GeV respectively for the two |ηγ | regions. For each jet flavour, the ratio of the cross sections in the two |ηγ | regions is also measured. The measurement is corrected for detector effects and compared to leading-order and next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations, based on various treatments and assumptions about the heavy-flavour content of the proton. Overall, the predictions agree well with the measurement, but some deviations are observed at high photon transverse energies. The total uncertainty in the measurement ranges between 13% and 66%, while the central γ + b measurement exhibits the smallest uncertainty, ranging from 13% to 27%, which is comparable to the precision of the theoretical predictions. A measurement of the shape of the differential decay rate and the associated Isgur-Wise function for the decay Λb0→Λc+μ−ν¯μ is reported, using data corresponding to 3 fb−1 collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions. The Λc+μ−ν¯μ(+anything) final states are reconstructed through the detection of a muon and a Λc+ baryon decaying into pK−π+, and the decays Λb0→Λc+π+π−μ−ν¯μ are used to determine contributions from Λb0→Λc*+μ−ν¯μ decays. The measured dependence of the differential decay rate upon the squared four-momentum transfer between the heavy baryons, q2, is compared with expectations from heavy-quark effective theory and from unquenched lattice QCD predictions.
