RS Ophiuchi (RS Oph) is a symbiotic recurrent nova that shows eruptive events roughly every 15 years. On August 8th, 2021, RS Oph erupted with its latest outburst. This event was detected by a wide range of multi-wavelength (MWL) instruments from radio up to very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. The MAGIC telescopes followed up on optical and high-energy triggers and initiated an observation campaign from August 9th till September 1st. RS Oph is the first nova detected in the VHE gamma-ray energy range. We report on the detection of VHE gamma rays at a significant level of 13.2σ during the first 4 days of RS Oph with the MAGIC telescopes. We combine the VHE emission detected by MAGIC with optical and high energy observations and conclude RS Oph accelerated hadrons during its eruption. A search for Majorana neutrinos in same-sign WW scattering events is presented. The analysis uses s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb - 1 recorded during 2015–2018 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The analysis targets final states including exactly two same-sign muons and at least two hadronic jets well separated in rapidity. The modelling of the main backgrounds, from Standard Model same-sign WW scattering and WZ production, is constrained with data in dedicated signal-depleted control regions. The distribution of the transverse momentum of the second-hardest muon is used to search for signals originating from a heavy Majorana neutrino with a mass between 50 GeV and 20 TeV. No significant excess is observed over the background expectation. The results are interpreted in a benchmark scenario of the Phenomenological Type-I Seesaw model. In addition, the sensitivity to the Weinberg operator is investigated. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the squared muon-neutrino–heavy-neutrino mass-mixing matrix element | VμN| 2 as a function of the heavy Majorana neutrino’s mass mN , and on the effective μμ Majorana neutrino mass | mμμ| . © 2023, CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS Collaboration.

A search for a new Z′ gauge boson predicted by Lμ − Lτ models, based on charged-current Drell–Yan production, pp → W±(∗) → Z′μ±ν → μ±μμ±ν, is presented. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1 of proton–proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search examines a final state of 3μ plus large missing transverse momentum. Upper limits are set on the Z′ production cross-section times branching ratio in the mass range of 5–81 GeV. After combining with the previous Z′ search using the neutral-current Drell–Yan production with a 4μ final state, the most stringent exclusion limits to date are achieved in the parameter space of the Z′ coupling strength and mass. © 2024, CC BY.

Decays of Ξb- and Ωb- baryons to Λ+c h-h′- final states, with h-h′- being π-π-, K-π- and K-K- meson pairs, are searched for using data collected with the LHCb detector. The data sample studied corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 8.7 fb-1 of pp collisions collected at centre-of-mass energies √s = 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The products of the relative branching fractions and fragmentation fractions for each signal mode, relative to the B- → Λ+c pπ- mode, are measured, with Ξb- → Λ+c K-π-, Ξb- → Λ+c K-K- and Ωb- → Λ+c K-K- decays being observed at over 5 σ significance. The Ξb- → Λ+c K-π- mode is also used to measure the Ξb- production asymmetry, which is found to be consistent with zero. In addition, the B- → Λ+c pK- decay is observed for the first time, and its branching fraction is measured relative to that of the B- → Λ+c pπ- mode. © 2024, CC BY.

Measurement of the CKM angle γ in B± → D K∗(892)± decays

Measurements of CP observables and the CKM angle γ are performed in B± → DK∗(892)± decays, where D represents a superposition of D0 and D0 states, using the LHCb dataset collected during Run 1 (2011–2012) and Run 2 (2015–2018). A comprehensive study of this channel is presented with the D meson reconstructed in two-body final states K±π, K+K- and π+π-;four-body final states K±ππ±π and π+π-π+π-;and three-body final states KS0π+π- and KS0K+K-. This analysis includes the first observation of the suppressed B± → [π+K-]DK∗± and B± → [π+K-π+π-]DK∗± decays. The combined result gives γ = (63 ± 13)◦ © 2024, CC BY.

A combination of fifteen top quark mass measurements performed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC is presented. The data sets used correspond to an integrated luminosity of up to 5 and 20 fb−1of proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The combination includes measurements in top quark pair events that exploit both the semileptonic and hadronic decays of the top quark, and a measurement using events enriched in single top quark production via the electroweak t-channel. The combination accounts for the correlations between measurements and achieves an improvement in the total uncertainty of 31% relative to the most precise input measurement. The result is mt= 172.52 ± 0.14 (stat) ± 0.30 (syst) GeV, with a total uncertainty of 0.33 GeV. © 2024, CC BY.

A summary of the constraints from searches performed by the ATLAS Collaboration for the electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos is presented. Results from eight separate ATLAS searches are considered, each using 140 fb−1 of proton–proton data at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 13 TeV collected at the Large Hadron Collider during its second data-taking run. The results are interpreted in the context of the 19-parameter phenomenological minimal supersymmetric standard model, where R-parity conservation is assumed and the lightest supersymmetric particle is assumed to be the lightest neutralino. Constraints from previous electroweak, flavour and dark matter related measurements are also considered. The results are presented in terms of constraints on supersymmetric particle masses and are compared with limits from simplified models. Also shown is the impact of ATLAS searches on parameters such as the dark matter relic density and the spin-dependent and spin-independent scattering cross-sections targeted by direct dark matter detection experiments. The Higgs boson and Z boson ‘funnel regions’, where a low-mass neutralino would not oversaturate the dark matter relic abundance, are almost completely excluded by the considered constraints. Observation of exotic J/ψ resonances in diffractive processes in proton-proton collisions

The first study of J/ψ production in diffractive processes in proton-proton collisions is presented. The study is based on an LHCb dataset recorded at centreof-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb-1. The data disfavour a nonresonant J/ψ production but are consistent with a resonant model including several resonant states observed previously only in B+ → J/ψK+ decays. The χc0(4500) state is observed with a significance over 5 σ and the χc1(4274) is confirmed with a significance of more than 4 σ. © 2024, CC BY.

A search for high-mass resonances decaying into a τ-lepton and a neutrino using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV is presented. The full run 2 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the years 2015–2018 is analyzed. The τ-lepton is reconstructed in its hadronic decay modes and the total transverse momentum carried out by neutrinos is inferred from the reconstructed missing transverse momentum. The search for new physics is performed on the transverse mass between the τ-lepton and the missing transverse momentum. No excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is observed and upper exclusion limits are set on the W′→τν production cross section. Heavy W′ vector bosons with masses up to 5.0 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming that they have the same couplings as the Standard Model W boson. For nonuniversal couplings, W′ bosons are excluded for masses less than 3.5–5.0 TeV, depending on the model parameters. In addition, model-independent limits on the visible cross section times branching ratio are determined as a function of the lower threshold on the transverse mass of the τ-lepton and missing transverse momentum.

This paper presents a measurement of fiducial and differential cross-sections for $$W^{+}W^{-}$$ production in proton–proton collisions at $$\sqrt{s}=13$$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb $$^{-1}$$ . Events with exactly one electron, one muon and no hadronic jets are studied. The fiducial region in which the measurements are performed is inspired by searches for the electroweak production of supersymmetric charginos decaying to two-lepton final states. The selected events have moderate values of missing transverse momentum and the ‘stransverse mass’ variable $$m_{\textrm{T2}}$$ , which is widely used in searches for supersymmetry at the LHC. The ranges of these variables are chosen so that the acceptance is enhanced for direct $$W^{+}W^{-}$$ production and suppressed for production via top quarks, which is treated as a background. The fiducial cross-section and particle-level differential cross-sections for six variables are measured and compared with two theoretical SM predictions from perturbative QCD calculations.
