The above-titled letter (ibid., vol.75, no.11, p.1546-8, Nov. 1987) proposed two numericalalgorithms for the solution of generalized eigenvalue problem Ax= lambda , where it is assumed that the matrix B is Hermitian. It was claimed by the author that standard algorithms are not available if the matrix B is singular. The commenters draw attention to the literature in this field based on the QZ algorithm. The author thanks the commenters for supplying the information but points out to prospective readers certain caveats with regard to use of the QZ algorithm.< >

As machines get larger and scientific applications advance, it is more and more imperative to fully utilize high performance computing (HPC) capability. The complexity and changing landscape of parallel computers may lead to users being unable or unsure how to achieve optimal performance from their applications and fully utilize their HPC resources. The Performance Optimisation and Productivity Centre of Excellence in Computing Applications (POP) has received funding from the European Commission as part of the Horizon 2020 programme to help alleviate these issues. It aims to uncover inefficiencies and their causes in existing parallel HPC applications that will lead to an improvement in the productivity and competitiveness of European organizations, in academia, government and industry. The POP project will drive efforts to highlight the need for and best practices in performance optimization through performance audits on codes along with training events to improve knowledge in this area. The aim is to help developers target their code development and refactoring in the most efficient direction and provide a return on investment from the savings due to the performance improvement. The POP project combines the expertise and experience of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), High Performance Computing Center Stuttgart, Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC), numerical algorithms group Ltd (NAG), RWTH Aachen and TERATEC. This combination provides longstanding and well respected resources in the academic and commercial realms. The POP members have come together to create a coherent and consistent methodology to give a clear, precise and useful overview of the performance of each HPC application. The services of the POP project are free of charge to organizations with in the EU to analyze and advise on any parallel code in academic, government or industrial organizations of any domain.

The approach to the production of technical documentation described arose from a need to supply documentation for a large library of mathematical software. There has been a growing demand to supply documentation in a variety of printed and online formats, tailored to the particular needs of end users. There is also an increasing number of new products which contain the original library as an embedded sub-component. First attempts to meet the demand for diverse forms of documentation led to the creation of many different bodies of text, containing similar information, but maintained and often authored separately. The solution to this problem was to develop a database which contains all the information previously held in the library documentation. The database can be used to generate both the original documents and new documents with varying style, format or content. There were two main processes involved in the transformation of documents to database records. The first was an object-oriented decomposition of the documented product, identifying all the sub-components and the important information relating to each one. The second process was to mark up text records using the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), an ISO standard (8879) for the mark up of computer-held documents.< >

The paper presents four adaptive strategies for knowledge-based front-ends (KBFEs). These strategies aim to contour the behaviour of a front-end system by acquiring information about the user's abilities and knowledge. The prototype program incorporating these strategies, Telos, is an adaptive front-end for the NAg FORTRAN Library. This library is contain over 740 numerical and statistical subroutines (algorithms). The four adaptive strategies are: (1) user stereotyping; (2) adaptive terminology; (3) objective qualifications; and (4) context-sensitive examples.< >

We present a novel approach to generating derivative code for mathematical models implemented as Fortran 95 programs using Automatic Differentiation inside a compiler, This technique allows us to combine the advantages of both operator overloading and source transformation based tools for Automatic Differentiation. Furthermore, the compiler'S infrastructure for syntactic, semantic, and static data flow analysis can be built on.

The numerical algorithms group Ltd is currently participating in the European HPCN Fourth Framework project on Parallel industrial Aum-Erical applications and Portable Libraries (PINEAPL). One of the main goals of the project is to increase the suitability of the existing NAG Parallel Library for dealing with computationally intensive industrial applications by appropriately extending the range of library routines. Additionally, several industrial applications are being ported onto parallel computers within the PINEAPL project by replacing sequential code sections with calls to appropriate parallel library routines. A substantial part of the library material being developed is concerned with the solution of PDE problems using parallel sparse linear algebra modules. This talk provides a number of performance results which demonstrate the efficiency and scalability of core computational routines - in particular, the iterative solver, the preconditioner and the matrix-vector multiplication routines. Most of the software described in this talk has been incorporated into the recently launched Release 1 of the PINEAPL Library.
