For better spectrum utilization, efficient channel allocation in multi-radio wireless mesh networks has become an active research area. Our proposed CARD algorithm deals with the application of cognitive mesh routers for fixed channel assignments to mesh clients under each router's domain. The farthest channel assignment by the cognitive radio in mesh routers ensures minimum inter-router and intra-router interference. Initial fixed assignment of channels to clients supporting k-connectivity (k = 3 and 5 sub-channels) shows substantial increase with 15 concurrent transmissions when compared to 4 in case of the CCA scheme with k=3 and 3 channels to choose, i.e., a factor of almost 4. The improvement in communication delay is about a factor of 80 when compared to SC and a factor of 35 compared to CCA.

Deafness is considered as a major medium access problem arising due to directional communication in beamforming antennas. In this paper, we provide a novel algorithm for mitigating deafness (AMD) in such antennas. The algorithm extends the directional virtual carrier sensing mechanism by dynamically maintaining parameters for every beam. AMD can easily be implemented with the existing medium access control (MAC) protocols for multiple beamforming antennas. Simulation results show that considerable performance gains can be achieved when the proposed algorithm is employed by the existing MAC schemes.

This paper addresses the issue of deafness and hidden terminal problem in a mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) using directional antennas. To minimize these effects, we propose a MAC protocol for directional Antennas (MDA) which employs an enhanced directional network allocation vector (NA V) scheme and, a novel technique of Diametrically Opposite Directions (DOD) transmission of RTS and CTS. We compare MDA with IEEE 802.11 and two recently proposed directional MAC protocols and results show that MDA outperforms these protocols in the majority of scenarios investigated. We also point out that the performance does depend on the network topology and the truffle pattern.
