Industrial control systems (ICS) operate on serial-based networks which lack proper security safeguards by design. They are also becoming more integrated to corporate networks, creating new vulnerabilities which expose ICS networks to in-creasing levels of risk with potentially significant impact. Despite those risks, only a few mechanisms have been suggested and are available in practice as cybersecurity safeguards for the ICS network layer, maybe because they might not be commercially viable. Intrusion detection systems (IDS) are typically deployed in the corporate networks to protect against attacks since they are based on TCP/IP. However, IDS are not used in serial-based ICS networks yet. This study examines and compares modern Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques applied in IDS that are potentially useful for serial-based ICS networks. The results showed that current AI-based IDS methods are viable in such networks. A mix of AI techniques would be the best way forward to detect known attacks via rules and novel attacks, not previously mapped, via supervised and unsupervised techniques. Despite these strategies' limited use in serial-based networks, their adoption could significantly strengthen cybersecurity of ICS networks. © 2023 IEEE.

Avoiding accidents at work has been a major concern for companies for years. Their impacts, such as financial, image, reputation, and human losses, are less tolerated world-wide. Traffic accidents in motor vehicles correspond to many accidents at work and can be caused by several factors. One of the main factors recurrently associated with accidents is when the driver sleeps. When sleeping, the driver completely loses control over the vehicle's actions, which can cause serious accidents. One of the approaches to prevent the driver from falling asleep is to predict the state of sleep (drowsiness). There are several ways to drowsiness detection, such as physiological data readings, driver's images, and blink frequency. There is no international standard on this topic or standout technology, so choosing the right market solution is problematic. This study analyzes these solutions, proposes selection criteria with functional and non-functional requirements, evaluates meaningful market solutions based on these criteria, and offers recommendations for deployment following the best technological practices.

Globalization implies geographically dispersed supply chains composed of facilities strategically located in several countries and regions of the world. These structures commonly involve several operational technology (OT) and Information technology (IT) infrastructures and integration to enable accurate and useful information processing. Such integration (also called Cyber-Physical Systems) transforms the industry and facilitates massive data volumes' systematic transformation into valuable information. Security risks posed by such integration may be substantial and, depending on the size of the company, and the number of integration points, dealing with them could easily cost millions of dollars. With the main objective of studying available strategies to manage security risks in companies with dispersed supply chains, this paper reviews international cyber-security standards and regulations and proposes a more comprehensive strategy. The strategy includes IT services, optimized perimeter segregation, and data flow policies among OT and IT networks to balance a high level of protection and cost-effectiveness. © 2020 IEEE.

Recognizing wildfires as a multiscale planetary emergency, this paper describes a systems analysis of technology countermeasures, with special attention to Sicily, California, and several other regions. The paper describes a framework for systems integration of firefighting, satellites, fixed imaging, and aerial vehicles, with mathematical simulation and machine learning, to support both policy mitigations and responses to incidents. The approach includes (1) the characterization of the planetary emergency of wildfires, (2) early identification of dangerous wildfires and means for their control, and (3) reduction of risks to population centers in both rural and urban areas. Societal metrics of success include human health and safety, environment and ecology, critical food and industrial supply chains, geopolitical security, and others. Several technology and policy countermeasures of particular interest are regional fuel management, distributed sensors, computational intelligence, advanced firefighting materials, protocols, and automatic and semiautonomous responses, benefiting from the latest advancements in information technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and others. © 2024 This work is made available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.

Viruses in aquatic environments pose a potential threat to human health, and the current commonly used chlorine disinfection and ultraviolet disinfection have limited inactivation ability for viruses. In this study, we propose a novel disinfection technology combining ultraviolet light with potassium ferrate (Fe(VI)-UV/Fe(VI)), optimize the disinfection process, investigate its inactivation effect on bacteriophage MS2 and the influencing factors, and analyze the mechanism of virus inactivation by Fe(VI)-UV/Fe(VI). Results demonstrated that Fe(VI)-UV/Fe(VI) enhanced MS2 inactivation rates by 0.35-fold and 2.59-fold compared to standalone UV and Fe(VI) treatments, respectively. The inactivation of bacteriophage MS2 using the optimized Fe(VI)-UV/Fe(VI) disinfection process (Fe(VI) initial concentration of 0.1 mg/L, 30 s interval, 100 μw/cm2 UV irradiation for 30 min) was as high as 5.24 lg. In acidic environments, the inactivation rate of bacteriophage MS2 by Fe(VI)-UV/Fe(VI) was higher than that in neutral and alkaline environments, but there was no significant difference in the inactivation effect in the pH range of 7-9 (p > 0.05), and the increase in the concentration of suspended particulate matter and dissolved organic matter in water decreased the inactivation rate of bacteriophage MS2. The oxidative reactive species generated in the Fe(VI)-UV/Fe(VI) disinfection system include hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and Fe(V)/Fe(IV), with the contribution rates of UV, •OH, and Fe(V)/Fe(IV) to the inactivation of bacteriophage MS2 being 68.08%, 18.37%, and 13.56%. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the disinfection effect and mechanism of action of Fe(VI)-UV/Fe(VI), which provided a basis for the design and optimization of efficient inactivation techniques for viruses in water. © 2025, The Authors. This article analyzes the irreversibility of hydro-magnetic dynamics of hybridized nanofluid comprising of titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) and zinc-oxide (ZnO) submerged into engine oil (used as a fuel) through a porous stretching sheet with multipart effects of viscous dissipation and non-uniform heat source. An induced magnetic field exists in the flow field due to the conducting nature of the hybrid nanofluid. The equations of the flow model are transformed by the similarity transformations and then simulated through a numerical scheme constructed with a formulation of central differences that adopts successive over-relaxation methodology. In this thermodynamic system, entropy and Bejan number profiles corresponding to the prominent parameters are simultaneously analysed for both the nanofluid case and hybrid nanofluid case in the Cartesian coordinates. A comparison table is constructed to validate the numerical results with existing literature. The impacts of various parameters on Nusselt number and skin friction coefficient are graphed with reference to the magnetic field parameter. A significant reduction in irreversibility and a remarkable improvement in thermal characteristics of engine oil are observed due to induced magnetism effects. The engine oil hybrid nanofluid (Ti6Al4V-ZnO/EO) exhibits a 13.89 % higher heat transfer rate over a porous stretching surface compared to the engine oil nanofluid (Ti6Al4V/EO). © 2025 The Authors

The advent of Industry 4.0 along with the subsequent Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) paradigm have exponentially increased the need for sensing and data gathering from industrial processes using diverse technologies. Although these heterogeneous technologies enable data collection from different sources, presenting multiple formats and diverse connectivity conditions, they also generate a complex environment due to the proliferation of devices with variated processing capacities, operating systems and communication protocols. This scenario can potentially create a management challenge that could evolve into utter chaos if not properly addressed. This Study aims to delineate the fundamental requirements for device management in industrial scenarios and propose an agnostic, federated management architecture that targets any IIoT devices, independent of technology specificities or communication mechanisms.

This paper reviews the current practice and challenges of community participation on waste segregation program in Jasin Malacca since 2015-2017. The Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing (Act 672) which came into force on 1st September 2011, is Governments' effort to provide a systematic, coordinated, effective and efficient solid waste management system in Malaysia including Malacca. Since then, there has been significance increase on the amount recycle waste collected. However, the community participation on solid waste segregation and recycling program still at low level due to lack of awareness, attitude and exposure on the advantages of recycling in the long term. Thirty preliminary questionnaires were distributed randomly at resident's housing area in Jasin and analysed through Average Index (AI) method. The result obtained shows the current challenges of the community in performing the waste segregation at source. From the result, further study will be conducted to discover new approach on promoting waste segregation which could provide the basis for success of 3R program in Malacca. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2019.

In the new Hakata station building, 'JR Hakata City', floating slabs were employed to avoid the influence of structure-borne noise to the hall and the movie theaters. Measurement of noise and vibration was carried out in the building at the time of the completion of construction of the railway tracks. has been confirmed that the floating slabs performed vibration reduction effects of 15 to 30dB as compared with ballasted tracks using ballast mats and that the measured noise level was smaller than 30dBA in the hall and smaller than 35dBA in the movie theater.
