Metamaterials are engineered materials with properties that go well beyond what offered by nature, providing unprecedented opportunities to tailor and enhance the control of waves. In this talk, I discuss our recent activity at microwaves and THz frequencies, showing how suitably tailored meta-atoms and their arrangements open exciting avenues for wave manipulation, including metasurfaces with enhanced wavefront manipulation, and magnet-free nonreciprocity and topological phenomena. Insights into the underlying physics and new devices based on these concepts will be presented.

Cancer risk prediction based on CT images of a patient taken at multiple time points in the past has become an emerging research topic. While deep learning methods yield promising results, they require a large amount of temporally sequenced data for reliable performance. Acquiring such time-series data is expensive and time-consuming. Hence, data aug-mentation based on a small, annotated, and temporally sequenced medical image dataset is essential to cancer risk prediction. This paper introduces a novel diffusion-based method for augmenting temporal medical images with an application to lung cancer risk prediction. Specifically, we develop our approach based on a conditional diffusion model owing to its high flexibility of condition design. We generate target images of a patient for training by overlaying tumors recently detected and masked by eroded segmentation maps onto CT images taken earlier to simulate tumor growth. Specifically, our conditional diffusion model is trained by using CT images taken in the first or second year, along with tumor segmentation maps in the third year, as well as the generated target images. Three distinct generation strategies are designed by using different combinations of CT images and eroded segmentation maps as conditions to synthesize lung CT images, hence diversifying and enriching the training set. Experimental results demonstrate that learning using 25 % of training data together with our augmented data achieves comparable performance to that using 100% of training data.

Foreign Exchange market is the world's largest daily currency turnover. Two of the popular currencies Euro and Pound sterling traded against the US Dollar. Since the Russia and Ukraine war started in February 2022, their exchange rates decrease to the lowest rate ever. Even though the general trend is bearish, several daily candles increase for some days making challenges for forex analysts. To solve this problem, classification is applied. The data is labeled downward and upward. By utilizing Linear Kernel and Radial Basis Function (RBF) Kernel-based Support Vector Machines (SVM), the candle direction can be classified and optimized by tuning the Hyperparameters. The accuracy of candle direction classifications are highly improved. After tuning, in general, classification using Linear Models can outperform RBF Models. The best accuracy found on the Pound sterling against US Dollar by using the Linear model is 98.11% and the accuracy becomes 100% on data testing at a ratio of 70:30. Whilst for the Euro against the US Dollar, the best accuracy found the same for both Linear and RBF models on a ratio of 80:20 at 97.53%. However, on data testing, it decreases to 94.51% for Linear Model and 93.41% using RBF Model. The implication of this study is SVM can successfully classify candle direction on pairs in the Forex Market that are affected by a big event that comes for such a long period as long as the hyperparameter is tuned.

Food sustainability is still one of the main priorities for many countries as it contributes to the economy and stability of the nation. For government in many countries whose peoples consumes rice as its staple food, food self-sufficiency initiatives highly depend on accurate prediction of paddy field map. Mapping paddy field task is a challenging problem which cannot be handled manually especially when the paddy fields are spread out in very wide geographical areas such as those in Indonesia. Fortunately, wide availability of satellite imagery and the advent of deep learning technology in the past ten years have made it possible to improve efficiency of most parts of those manual works involving image semantic segmentation tasks. However, satellite image-based semantic segmentation is a challenging task. High object complexity, cloud partial occlusion, larger image size than a computer memory can stored can hinder accuracy of the image segmentation results. This paper presents a method for paddy field map generating using semantic image segmentation approach in which Pyramid Scene Parsing Net model is used for segmenting satellite imagery. The generated paddy map can be used as a basis for decision-making, especially in the agricultural sector. Analysis of local land use/land cover dynamics. The results of his experiments using SPOT 6 satellite imagery from the Pahung region of Central Kalimantan achieved average training accuracy, best training accuracy and test accuracy of 0.85, 0.86 and 0.89 respectively. These results indicated that the semantic segmentation model is suitable for addressing the same task in different crops.

The effort devoted in introducing new numerical optimization benchmarks has attracted the attention to develop new optimization algorithms to solve them. Very recently, a new suite on bound constrained optimization problems is proposed as a new addition to CEC benchmark series. Differential Evolution (DE) is a simple Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) which shows superior performance to solve many CEC benchmark during the past years. This paper presents a new extension to DE algorithm through extending the line of research for AGDE algorithm. The new algorithm, which we name GADE, enhanced the DE algorithm by introducing a generalized adaptive framework for enhancing the performance of DE. Numerical experiments on a set of 10 test problems from the CEC2020 benchmarks for 5, 10, 15 and 20 dimensions, including a comparison with state-of-the-art algorithm are executed. Comparative analysis indicates that GADE is superior to other state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of stability, robustness, and quality of solution. © 2020 IEEE.

Increasing penetration of wind and renewable generation poses significant challenges to the power system operations and reliability. This paper considers the real-time optimal transmission switching (OTS) problem for determining the generation dispatch and network topology that can account for uncertain energy resources. To efficiently solve the resultant two-stage stochastic program, we propose a tractable linear decision rule (LDR) based approximation solution that can eliminate the uncertain variables and lead to fixed number of constraints. The proposed LDR approach can guarantee feasibility, and significantly reduces the computational complexity of existing approaches that grows with the number of randomly generated samples of uncertainty. Numerical studies on IEEE test cases demonstrate the high approximation accuracy of the proposed LDR solution and its computational efficiency for real-time OTS implementations. © 2020 IEEE.

The concept of smart building includes the optimization of energy usage in a building. One of the possible solutions for this is to adaptively adjust appliances utilization according to activity level in the building. Thus, an intelligent activity estimation system needs to be developed. However, massive annotated dataset is necessary to train the system. Therefore, we propose a system that enables rapid data annotation to collect the massive dataset. This study aims to address the common issue of biased estimation errors in time series modeling by analyzing the error in locating ideal hyperparameters and defining appropriate validation methods. Specifically, it focuses on predicting the stock price of Bank Rakyat Indonesia using a combination of historical stock prices, technical indicators, exchange rates, and news sentiment data, while determining the optimal variables for deep learning models. Employing a deep learning-based Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) model, the study optimizes hyperparameters alongside walk-forward validation for time series prediction. It explores different combinations of variables and adapts the sliding window approach to the context of the data. The results highlight the importance of optimizing hyperparameters and utilizing walk-forward validation for accurate time series prediction. The model incorporating historical stock prices and sentiment scores outperforms others, achieving an RMSE of 96.61 and MAE of 86.97. Incorporating sentiment scores reduces RMSE by 39.55 % compared to models using only historical stock prices, while adding technical indicators does not yield improvement. This study contributes to the field by addressing the issue of biased estimation errors in time series modeling, offering insights into the optimization of hyperparameters and validation methods for accurate predictions. It also underscores the significance of incorporating sentiment analysis alongside historical stock prices for improved forecasting accuracy. © 2024 The Authors
