Fast and robust fingerprint matching is a challenging task today in fingerprint-based biometric systems. A fingerprint matching algorithm compares two given fingerprints and returns either a degree of similarity or a binary decision. Minutiae-based fingerprint matching is the most well-known and widely used method. This paper reveals a new technique of fingerprint matching, using an efficient data structure, combining the minutiae representation with the individual usefulness of each minutia, to make the matching more powerful. Experimental results exhibit the strength of this method.

We analyze two software rejuvenation policies of cluster server systems under varying workload, called fixed rejuvenation and delayed rejuvenation. In order to achieve a higher average throughput, we propose the delayed rejuvenation policy, which postpones the rejuvenation of individual nodes until off-peak hours. Analytic models using the well known paradigm of Markov chains are used. Since the size of the Markov model is nontrivial, automated specification generation, and the solution via stochastic Petri nets is utilized. Deterministic time to trigger rejuvenation is approximated by a 20-stage Erlangian distribution. Based on the numerical solutions of the models, we find that under the given context, although the fixed rejuvenation occasionally yields a higher throughput, the delayed rejuvenation policy seems to outperform fixed rejuvenation policy by up to 11%. We also compare the steady-state system availabilities of these two rejuvenation policies.

It is generally believed that the queueing behavior of an arrival process is most sensitive to its first and second order statistics. In this paper, we show that this is not generally true. We consider the queueing behavior of two classes of sources. The first class is the superposition of multiple discrete autoregressive sources of order 1 (referred to as DAR(1) sources), and the second class is a single DAR(1) source having the same first and second order statistics as the superposed source. In particular, we show that in the homogeneous case, the mean queue lengths of the two models are identical, but the queue length variances of the two models are significantly different depending on the correlation of individual sources.

This work targets the emerging use of software component technology for high-performance scientific parallel and distributed computing. While component software engineering will benefit the construction of complex science applications, its use presents several challenges to performance optimization. A component application is composed of a set of components, thus, application performance depends on the interaction (possibly non-linear) of the component set. Furthermore, a component is a "binary unit of composition" and the only information users have is the interface the component provides to the outside world. An interface for component performance measurement and query is presented to address optimization issues. We describe the performance component design and an example demonstrating its use for runtime performance tuning. © 2003 IEEE.

In this paper, we describe a set of 3D and 4D visualization tools and techniques for CORIE, a complex environmental observation and forecasting system (EOFS) for the Columbia River. The Columbia River, a complex and highly variable estuary, is the target of numerous cross-disciplinary ecosystem research projects and is at the heart of multiple sustainable development issues with long reaching implications for the Pacific Northwest. However, there has been until recently no comprehensive and objective system available for modeling this environment, and as a consequence, researchers and agencies have had inadequate tools for evaluating the effects of natural resource management decisions. CORIE was designed to address this gap and is a major step towards the vision of a scalable, multi-use, real-time EOFS. Although CORIE already had a rich set of visualization tools, most of them produced 2D visualizations and did not allow for interactive visualization. Our work adds advanced interactive 3D tools to CORIE, which can be used for further inspection of the simulated and measured data.

Motivated by routing issues in ad hoc networks, we present polylogarithmic-time distributed algorithms for two problems. Given a network, we first show how to compute connected and weakly connected dominating sets whose size is at most O(log Δ) times optimal, Δ being the maximum degree of the input network. This is best-possible if NP DTIME[nO(log log n)] and if the processors are limited to polynomial-time computation. We then show how to construct dominating sets which satisfy the above properties, as well as the "low stretch" property that any two adjacent nodes in the network have their dominators at a distance of at most O(log n) in the network. (Given a dominating set S, a dominator of a vertex u is any v ∈ S such that the distance between u and v is at most one.) We also show our time bounds to be essentially optimal.

Inspired by the natural features of the variable size of the population, an improved genetic algorithm with variable population-size (VPGA) is presented in this paper. Based on the VPGA, a novel synthetic computational-intelligence-based method (SCIBM) is proposed and applied to the identification of water-flooded zones in the oil field. This method integrates evolutionary neural networks and recognition technique for multi-point-data neural networks. Simulation results applying the SCIBM to actual logging data in Daqing Oil Field show that the proposed method works well in the identification of water-flooded zones.

A new musical instrument recognition technique based on a hidden Markov model (HMM) is proposed. The spectral envelope is the key information of instrument characteristic and timbre. We decompose an instrument sound into sinusoidal components (harmonics) and noise components and estimate the amplitudes of the harmonics component. We want to express the spectral envelope effectively using estimated amplitude, therefore, we define three kinds of features and apply a recognition procedure to each feature. The HMM model used is continuous single Gaussian output HMM. To evaluate the performance of the recognition technique, the proposed technique is applied to classify the real instrumental sound of MUMS (MacGill University Master Samples). The recognition success ratio is more than 70%.
