Calcium aluminate cement (CAC)bonded castables have numerous benefits when compared to monolithic refractories. Their main drawback is their long initial heating, when the physical and chemically-bonded water are released. If the mass flux of water to the ambient is lower than the vapor generation, the gas pressure can increase well above the material's strength resulting in cracks and spalling of the ceramic lining. In order to avoid this, optimized heat up curves are needed, and one promising methodology by using numerical models. Most of these calculations are based on tools used for simulating portland cement concrete structures on fire and they vary both in complexity and their basic assumptions. Thus, the main question that remains is how complex such models need to be in order to capture the fundamental aspects of this phenomenon. The present work aimed to solve this issue by implementing multiple numerical tools reported in the literature with distinct complexity levels and fundamental assumptions and by also conducting neutron tomography tests on a CAC-bonded castable. It was possible to see that the pressure values predicted by such methodologies are equivalent and the water content predicted is qualitatively similar within the models and with the experimental values, indicating that the simplest approach might be used for predicting the castables' drying. © 2022 Unified International Technical Conference on Refractories, UNITECR 2022 - proceedings. The drying of refractory monolithics is one of the main drawbacks of this class of materials due to its implication on the production halt of many industrial equipment. This is especially true for calcium aluminate cement (CAC)-bonded castables, where the vapor derived from the unreacted water and dehydration reactions can pressurize yielding cracks and explosions of the ceramic lining. Numerous advances on additives have been made to increase these materials' resistance to explosive spalling, however, the fundamentals of the physical phenomena that yields such a problem remain an open issue. For years, the techniques used to study this process were limited to indirect tests, such as the thermogravimetric analysis or the pressure and temperature measurements of samples being unidirectionally heated. Recently, direct techniques such as nuclear magnetic resonance and X-ray tomography were applied in the context of regular concrete on fire scenarios. The current work presents preliminary results of neutron tomography applied to monitoring the drying of refractory castables. The overall behavior of the castable was qualitatively similar to those observed for regular concrete, and the results provide information that can be successfully applied on numerical simulations of larger pieces with dimensions closer to the industrial ones, overcoming the main drawback of such techniques, their small sample dimensions. © 2022 Unified International Technical Conference on Refractories, UNITECR 2022 - proceedings. The objective of this work was to determine the effect of the binomial time/temperature of hydrocooling (10 and 20 min at 0 °C, 10 °C, and 20 °C) on the shelf life of sorrel, a non-conventional vegetable. The experimental design was entirely randomized in a 2 × 3 × 6 factorial scheme with three repetitions. The vegetables were stored at 10±1 °C and 99% relative humidity for 10 days. The effects of time and temperature of hydrocooling on physical and chemical characteristics were observed. The degradation of bioactive compounds was higher in the control samples and samples hydrocooled at 0 °C, resulting in lower antioxidant capacity at 10 days. Hydrocooling at 20 °C for 10 min maintained the color of the vegetables until the tenth day, with a chlorophyll content of 34.54 mg.100 g−1sup>, related to the reduction of the respiration rate and weight loss. Hydrocooled sorrel for 20 min at the same temperature showed a vitamin C content of 63.71 mg.100 g−1sup> and total phenolics of 249.57 mg of EAG.100 g−1sup> of fresh matter, by the Fast Blue method. Thus, 20 °C for 10 or 20 min was the most efficient parameter for preserving sorrel samples. © 2023

The present results analyzed deformation behavior under tension and compression of two different austenitic stainless steels: AIsI 201LN, with low nickel content and stabilized with Mn and N;and AIsI 316LV, stabilized with Ni and with low content of interstitial atoms. Mechanical tests were performed at 10 -3 s -1 and at temperatures varying from -100 to 600 o C to yield comparable values of the stacking fault energy (sFE). The resulting microstructure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction and EBsD. The stress-strain curves were analyzed using the Kocks-Mecking (K-M) approach. For comparable stacking fault energies, temperature enhances the thermal activation effects that led to lower fraction of mechanical twins in the 201LN compared with the 316LV. The crystallographic re-orientation followed the flow rule irrespective of the temperature and deformation mechanism: tension and compression experiments showed the or orientation with the tension axis, respectively. In tension the dislocation storage and recovery factors of the K-M model were larger than in the compression and the amount of stored dislocations and crystallite size reflect these effects. In the compression, the TWIp effect was reduced for the 316LV and suppressed for the 201LN. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This study proposed country-specific characterisation factors (CFs) for Thailand by modifying the Thai spatially Differentiated Life Cycle Impact Assessment (ThaisD) method and introducing monetary conversion factors to express environmental impacts in Thai Baht. Five impact categories were fully parameterised, including fine particulate matter formation (pMF), human toxicity (both cancer and non-cancer) (HT c and HT nc ), freshwater ecotoxicity (FET), and water scarcity (Ws). Other spatialised CFs were selected from regionalisation models in ReCipe2016 and IMpACT World+. When comparing the use of country-specific CFs with global average, the impact scores for pMF, HT c , HT nc , FET, photochemical ozone formation and terrestrial acidification demonstrated notably different levels, ranging from ±25 to ±50 %. The developed method was then applied to assess environmental impacts and costs of Thailand's transport sector, encompassing freight and passenger transport across roadway, railway, waterway, and aviation. Climate change (CC) was significantly attributed to human health and ecosystem quality impacts, while the major contributor to resource scarcity impact was fossil resource scarcity (Fs). In some scenarios, non-exhaust emissions, particularly from freight trucks, accounted for 40–60 % of the total pMF impacts. Environmental costs of freight and passenger transport in Thailand were 0.08–3.64 Thai Baht per tonne-kilometre and 0.01–0.81 Thai Baht per passenger-kilometre, respectively. Among transport modes, trains were found to be the most environmentally favourable option for both passenger and freight transport, while aviation had the highest environmental impact for freight transport. In contrast, passenger aviation had a comparable environmental burden to passenger cars due to optimised occupancy rates. Developing biodegradable oil absorption fibrous materials is essential because discarding conventional separation materials could cause secondary pollution due to their nondegradable properties. In this study, highly hydrophobic and superoleophilic porous polylactic acid (pLA) fibers were prepared using centrifugal spinning combined with nonsolvent-induced phase separation. The porous structure of pLA fibers was controlled by the ratio between good solvent and nonsolvent in the spinning solutions. The morphology and physical properties of the obtained pLA fibers were investigated using various measurement techniques. The pLA fibrous membrane prepared from a pLA solution containing chloroform/dimethylformamide (80/20 w/w) indicated not only a high water contact angle but also a high oil sorption value. The porous pLA fibers are a potential candidate for use as green materials for environmental applications. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The fabrication of customized implants by additive manufacturing has allowed continued development of the personalized medicine field. Herein, a 3D-printed bioabsorbable poly (lactic acid) (pLA)- β-tricalcium phosphate (TCp) (10 wt %) composite has been modified with CeO2sub> nanoparticles (CeNps) (1, 5 and 10 wt %) for bone repair. The filaments were prepared by melt extrusion and used to print porous scaffolds. The nanocomposite scaffolds possessed precise structure with fine print resolution, a homogenous distribution of TCp and CeNp components, and mechanical properties appropriate for bone tissue engineering applications. Cell proliferation assays using osteoblast cultures confirmed the cytocompatibility of the composites. In addition, the presence of CeNps enhanced the proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells;thereby, increasing alkaline phosphatase (ALp) activity, calcium deposition and bone-related gene expression. Results from this study have shown that the 3D printed pLA-TCp-10%CeO2sub> composite scaffold could be used as an alternative polymeric implant for bone tissue engineering applications: avoiding additional/revision surgeries and accelerating the regenerative process. © 2023

In this study, silica gel was functionalized with Ag and ZnO nanoparticles for use as absorbent pads in active packaging for meat products. The silica gel, derived from renewable sources (rice husk), was functionalized by decorating the silica matrix with Ag and ZnO nanoparticles. For silica functionalization, the chemical reduction method was used for silver, and the precipitation method was used for ZnO. The samples were characterized for chemical composition to evaluate the effectiveness of functionalization and its leaching in an aqueous medium. silica and functionalized silica samples were also evaluated for their effectiveness in microbiological control through agar diffusion tests, determination of Minimum Inhibitory Concentration, and effectiveness in application in a prototype packaging, where beef was used as the analysis mechanism. The main results indicate that silver was more effective in controlling pseudomonas aeruginosa, a pathogen often associated with the deterioration of meat products. silica functionalized with ZnO did not show antimicrobial effectiveness against this type of microorganism. © 2024, The Authors.
