The objective of this study is to determine and troubleshoot the problems of using handheld optical power meter and optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) for monitoring and troubleshooting a conventional passive optical network (PON) equipped with optical splitter/coupler that used to broadcast optical signals from one fiber to many fibers. This paper proposes an appreciate approach to overcome these testing challenges. In this enhancement, a commercially available OTDR is located at central office (CO) and a tapper circuit is designed to allow the OTDR testing signal to bypass the optical splitter/coupler in a conventional PON when emitted from CO towards customer sites for centralized monitoring in downstream direction. This provides a faster, simpler, and less complex way for installation testing, service activation testing, and network performance monitoring and in-service troubleshooting a PON.

This paper presented a new approach to monitor the network performance and detect any occurrence of fault in fiber-to-the-home passive optical network (FTTH-PON) using an efficient monitoring system named Smart Access network Testing, Analyzing and Database (SANTAD). An optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) with 1625 nm laser source is located at central office (CO) and connected to a remote personnel computer (PC) via Ethernet TCP/IP connection. A tapper circuit is designed to allow the OTDR testing signal to bypass the optical splitter in a conventional FTTH-PON when emitted in downstream direction. The key idea is to accumulate all OTDR measurement to be displayed on a PC computer screen for centralized monitoring and advanced data analyzing. The main advantages of this work is to improve the survivability and efficiency of FTTH-PON, while reduce the hands on workload as well as maintenance cost and time. The proposed system was implemented in a FTTH-PON network testbed and the experimental results showed that the proposed system achieves high accuracy in addressing the exact failure location.

A real-time optical network monitoring system named Smart Access network _ Testing, Analyzing and Database (SANTAD) that combined remote controlling, centralized monitoring and troubleshooting, fault detection, optical switching as well as protection and restoration features is introduced for delivering high quality of services (QoS) for passive optical network (PON). The implementation of SANTAD in PON shows its contribution on obtains the high accuracy in detecting any occurrence of fault and addressing the failure location within 30 seconds. The main advantages of this work are to assists the network operators to manage the PON network system more efficiently, reduce hands on workload, minimize network downtime, and rapidly restore failed services when problems are detected and diagnosed.

This paper focused on the implementation of automatic device switching to perform in restoration scheme located at distribution fiber section. This protection device is potentially will improve the system efficiency in order to provide the continuous data flow until it reach to the end user. We proposed for immediate split structure in EPON network when the signal is totally split when it pass through the optical splitter. The restoration scheme proposed in this paper was presented and the simulation results proved the system feasibility. The bit error rate (BER) performances are measured by a 1.25 Gb/s non-return-to zero (NRZ) pseudo random binary sequence (PBRS) with a pattern length of 2 31 -1 for the downstream traffic between OLT and 8 ONUs. Our results were obtained by observing bit error rates, eye diagram, and optical power levels.

This paper focuses on developing a passive in-line monitoring (PIM) device prototype, which used to tap out a small ratio of triple-play signals for in-service monitoring and failure identifying against fiber fault in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access network. This device will be installed with the main lines in FTTH permanently to allow the technicians to simply connect it to a portable tester unit for transmission surveillance and failure detection. The PIM device is used to sharply determine the location of break point before repairing. A passive taper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. This device is potentially to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

A passive tapper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. The entire optical components that had been used in the circuit design including connectors, splices, optical isolators, and optical couplers. This device is potentially to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

Functional improvements to mobile terminals have made possible the spread of multimedia information delivery services. Especially for sports, a service that extracts important scenes and reports them to users has become popular. We take the approach that situational changes in a game's progress can be presented as state transitions, and devise an important scene analysis model based on Result Importance (RI), which represents each situation's actual importance, and Situation Importance (SI), which shows the degree of a chance at the situation. With the increasing application of distributed energy resources and information technologies in the electricity infrastructure, innovative possibilities for incorporating the demand side more actively in power system operation are enabled. At the residential level energy costs could be reduced with intelligent price-based control concepts (demand response). A promising, controllable, residential distributed generation technology is micro cogeneration (micro-CHP). Micro-CHP is an energy efficient technology that simultaneously provides heat and electricity to households during operation. This paper presents a detailed model of a household using a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) micro-CHP system in conjunction with heat storage options to fulfil its heat and part of its electricity demand. Furthermore, a decentralised controller based on a model predictive control (MPC) strategy is proposed. MPC can take benefit of future knowledge on prizes and energy demands and can therefore lead to better system performance. In simulations the performance of the MPC-controlled PEMFC system is illustrated under different conditions regarding energy pricing, domestic energy demand, and system configuration.

This paper focuses on developing a simple, attracting and user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) for centralized failure detection system (CFDS) by using MATLAB software. The developed program will be installed with optical line terminal (OLT) at central office (CO) to centrally monitoring each optical fiber line's status and detecting the failure location that occurs in the drop region of fiber to the home (FTTH) access network downwardly from CO towards customer premises. Conventionally, the faulty fiber and failure location can be detected by using optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) upwardly from customer premises towards CO. However, OTDR can only display a single result of a line in a time and also time and cost misspend. CFDS is interfaced with the OTDR to accumulate every network testing result to be displayed on a single computer screen for further analysis. The program will identify and present the parameters of optical line such as the line's status either in working or nonworking condition, magnitude of decreasing, failure location and other details as shown in the OTDR's screen. The analysis result will be sent to field engineers or service providers for promptly action.

In this paper, we discussed the mechanism of optical fiber break in time division multiplexing passive optical network (TDM-PON) and the upwardly or downwardly monitoring issues with conventional fiber fault localization technique by using optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). We also studied the previous fault localization technology that had been recommended. Finally, we proposed a centralized inline monitoring and network testing system named as centralized failure detection system (CFDS). CFDS will be installed with optical line terminal (OLT) at the central office (CO) or network operation center to centrally monitoring each optical fiber line's status and detecting the failure location that occurs in the multi-line drop region of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access network downwardly from CO towards the customer premises to improve the service reliability and reduce the restoration time and maintenance cost.
