Multi-Agent systems (MAS) are collection of loosely coupled intelligent agents. These systems operate in a distributed, highly dynamic, unpredictable and unreliable environment in order to meet their overall goals. Agents in such an environment are vulnerable to different types of run time exceptions. It is necessary to have an effective exception diagnosis and resolution mechanism in place in order to ensure reliable interactions between agents. In this paper, we propose novel exception diagnosis architecture for open MAS. The proposed architecture classifies the runtime exceptions and diagnoses the underlying causes of exceptions using a heuristic classification technique. The proposed architecture is realised in terms of specialised exception diagnosing agents known as sentinel agents. The sentinel agents act as delegates of problem solving agents and mediate interactions between them. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The WATERS network (WATer and Environmental Research systems network) will be an integrated real-time distributed observing system which will enable academic and government scientists, engineers, educators, and practitioners to advance effective management of our nation's water resources by understanding human interactions with water and the natural and built environment. WATERS will provide easily accessible real time environmental data as well as analysis tools to engineers, scientists, educators, K- graduate students and policymakers so they can better understand how water quantity, quality and related components of the hydrologic cycle are impacted by natural and human influences. The WATERS strategic plan will be completed by July 2007 and requires constituent input. This paper describes the draft Conceptual Design and the Education Plan of WATERS network. This paper will highlight the potential impact of WATERS on undergraduate and graduate environmental engineering education in order to elicit input from the environmental engineering education community on how WATERS network could better meet the future needs of undergraduate and graduate students and educators. Recently, wireless local area network (WLAN) hotspots have been deployed in many areas (e.g., cafes, airports, university campuses). The new IEEE 802.11e standard further provides quality of service (QoS) provisioning by grouping the applications (or traffic) into four different access categories. The coverage area of WLANs can be extended by allowing the neighboring mobile devices to relay data to the access points. This concept is known as multi-hop WLANs. Due to the limited network capacity and the contention-based channel access mechanism, admission control is required to regulate the number of simultaneous flows to maintain QoS. The multi-hop extension of WLANs present further challenges for admission control design due to the location-dependent contention in the network. In this paper, we propose an admission control algorithm for multi-hop 802.11e WLANs. The admission control algorithm first constructs the network's contention graph to break down the network contention situation into areas comprised of maximal cliques. Then, the admission decision is made by analyzing the available capacity of each maximal clique with 802.11e saturation throughput analysis. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm is effective in providing QoS guarantee to the existing voice and video flows while maintaining a good performance for best effort traffic. © 2006 ACM.

Length reduction of evanescent-mode ridge waveguide bandpass filters is investigated extensively. Based on the conventional filter configuration, two new filter configurations are proposed: one is the generalized filter, and the other is the folded filter. In the generalized filter configuration, the cross sections of the evanescent waveguide and the ridge waveguide are not necessarily the same. It is found that the filter length can be reduced by enlarging the evanescent waveguide height. In the folded filter configuration, the filter is folded back at the middle coupling section. The folded junction is ridged to provide the required coupling between the two ridge waveguide resonators it connects. A design example demonstrates the feasibility of this filter configuration.

Smart antenna systems have been considered for base station (BS) and mobile station (MS) to improve spectral efficiency and link quality. The newly emerging 3rd generation mobile (W-CDMA and cdma2000) systems are required to support high bit rate services. This type of high bit rate traffic inevitably consumes a significant amount of capacity and causes considerable interference to low data rate users. Under these circumstances, the smart antenna system is a good candidate to mitigate this interference and keep link quality at adequate levels. One of the crucial components, which can be very complex, is the searcher whose functionality is to continuously search for new multipath signals for combining. A spatio-temporal searcher structure is proposed to enhance the detection capability of the multipath traffic channel searcher. This structure basically employs a spatio-temporal signal structure to search for a new signal. The detection and false alarm probabilities of the new and conventional schemes are calculated and numerical examples of mean acquisition time are given.

We propose the adaptive cascade recursive least squares with subsection adaptation (CRLS-SA) algorithm for direct estimation of line spectral frequencies (LSF) for use in speech coding. The least squares based CRLS-SA algorithm has a low computational complexity since each section is adapted independently from other sections. Using CRLS-SA, the LSF can be obtained directly from the coefficients of each section of the CRLS-SA structure. Two CRLS-SA approaches can be used for estimating LSF: use CRLS-SA as an AR inverse filter and obtain the LSF by converting the coefficients of each second order filter using a look-up table or, alternatively, construct a cascade of second order LSF polynomials P(z) and Q(z), and adapt each using CRLS-SA. The results show that the LSF estimates from CRLS-SA are competitive with the results obtained by the popular autocorrelation method followed by approximation using Chebyshev polynomials. © 1999 IEEE.

We analyze the convergence behavior of the CRLS-SA algorithm for inverse filtering. The CRLS-SA is a cascade adaptive filter based on the RLS algorithm, with each section adapted independently based on global minimization. The subsection adaptation results in reduced computational complexity. The rate of convergence is evaluated based on the convergence time constant defined as the ratio of condition number and sensitivity. The smaller the convergence time constant, the faster the structure converges. Analysis and simulation explain and show that CRLS-SA exhibits faster convergence than the direct form RLS adaptive filter for speech type signals. © 1999 IEEE.
