Optical diagnosis, performance monitoring, and characterization are essential for achieving high performance and ensuring high quality of services (QoS) of any efficient and reliable optical access network. In this paper, we proposed a practical in-service transmission surveillance scheme for passive optical network (PON). The proposed scheme is designed and simulated by using the OptiSystem CAD program with the system sensitivity - 35 dBm. A real time optical network monitoring software tool named smart access network _ testing, analyzing and database (SANTAD) is introduced for providing remote controlling, centralized monitoring, system analyzing, and fault detection features in large scale network infrastructure management and fault diagnostic. 1625 nm light source is assigned to carry the troubleshooting signal for line status monitoring purposes in the live network system. Three acquisition parameters of optical pulse: distance range, pulse width, and acquisition time, is contributed to obtain the high accuracy in determining the exact failure location. The lab prototype of SANTAD was implemented in the proposed scheme for analyzing the network performance. The experimental results showed SANTAD is able to detect any occurrence of fault and address the failure location within 30 seconds. The main advantages of this work are to manage network efficiently, reduce hands on workload, minimize network downtime and rapidly restore failed services when problems are detected and diagnosed.

The implementation of Passive In-line Monitoring (PIM) device in tree-structured FTTH access network

We proposed and developed a fully passive device prototype, named Passive In-line Monitoring (PIM) device, which used to tap out a small ratio of triple-play (data, voice, and video) signals for monitoring purpose without affecting the transmission in tree-structured fiberto-the-home (FTTH) access network. The device will be installed with the main lines in FTTH permanently to allow the field engineers or technicians to simply connect this device to a portable tester unit for transmission surveillance and failure detection. The PIM device is used to sharply determine location of break point before repairing. A passive taper circuit is required to obtain the optical signals to provide a visual way of monitoring the receiving signal performance. The entire optical components that had been used in the circuit design including connectors, splices, optical isolators, and optical couplers. The PIM device is able to improve the service reliability and reduce the repairing cost and time.

This paper proposed a network management software tool named smart access network _ testing, analyzing and database (SANTAD) that associated with remotely controlling, optical monitoring, system analyzing, fault detection, protection switching, and automatic recovery apparatus for fiber-to-the-home passive optical network (FTTH-PON) based on Visual Basic programming. The developed program is able to prevent and detect any occurrence of fault in the network system through centralized monitoring and remote operating from central office (CO) via Ethernet connection. SANTAD enable the status of each transmission link to be displayed on a single computer screen with capability to configure the drastic drop of optical signal level and detect the failure simultaneously. The analysis results will then stored in database with certain attributes such as date and time, network failure rate, failure location, etc. The database system enable the history of network scanning process be analyzed and studied by the engineers.

This paper presented a status monitoring system designed to improve fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) engineering work by enabling technicians in central offices to observe, in real time, the usage state of FTTH services for each line in detail when they perform operations such as changing cable routes. This will reduce service interruptions. For FTTH access services, optical network units (ONUs) are installed in customer premises and optical line terminals (OLTs) are installed in the central office. The monitoring system is connected to the fiber section between ONUs and an OLT, and it receives the upstream optical signal from the ONU. This optical signal is converted to 1-bit signal to be processed by computer. Every ONU is equipped with wireless transmitter and PIC microcontroller to send signal to wireless receiver (multipoint to point). The display program is created to monitor the condition of FTTH lines.

In this paper, we present access control system (ACS) a cost effective protection for fiber fault identification in fiber to the home (FTTH) passive optical network (PON). To achieve better protection, ACS can access by remote host via Internet or LAN, with the specification available a complete system can be made with 24 man-hours. Our solution is shown to be effective in improving live-fiber services.

A fully passive optical signal tapping device named Passive In-line Monitoring (PIM) device is developed to provide and increase the monitoring and maintenance capabilities of Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH). This device will be permanently installed with the FTTH trunk lines to tap out a small ratio of triple-play signals for monitoring appliance without affecting the service transmission. The PIM device optically splits the full-duplex signals into two portions;98% maintains in the transmission link, while the other 2% is simultaneously connects to a portable tester unit for identifying the signal presence and direction. Such features also allow the network operators to maintain and operate their network more cost-effectively and offer the end-users with an improved survivability and reliability network, which is continuously monitored 24 h a day and 7 days a week. A PIM device prototype had been successfully developed in this study and implemented in FTTH. The experimental results show the parameters of PIM device are operating wavelength 1310/1480/1550 ran, operating bandwidth±15 ran, insertion loss35 dB and directionality>55 dB. © 2009 Asian network for Scientific Information.

This paper addresses a new restoration mechanism in drop region of EPON network by using the optical switch device to increase the efficiency, survivability and reliability of fiber to the home (FTTH) customer access network. The developed device will be installed at the drop section to detect the failure line that occurs in the multi-line drop section of FTTH network downwardly from passive optical splitter to the customer premises (ONU). The drop section restoration mechanism called smart drop restoration scheme (SDRS) will contribute for tree based and bus based architecture. Conventionally, the failure line of FTTH network can be measured using Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) upwardly from customer premises to the central office. The optical switches will be controlled by Access Control System (ACS). If the breakdown is the detected in drop section, ACS will recognize the related access line by the 3% tapped signal that is connected to every access line. The activation signal is then sent to activate the dedicated protection scheme. But if fault is still not restored, the shared protection scheme will be activated. Results from Optisystem software simulation will be presented so as to prove the solution feasibility.

In this paper, the temperature-pattern dependence (T-PD) of initial/residual carrier density, Ni, of high-speed digitally modulated uncooled semiconductor laser diode has been investigated in details. The temperature dependence (TD) of N ii has been calculated according to the TD of threshold carrier density, N th , analytically and not by the well known exponential Pankove. While the pattern dependence (PD) of N i has been calculated according to the effect of the number of ldquo0rdquo bits preceding the considered ldquo1rdquo bit, N bit , and bitrate, Brate, on the carrier density through the time interval between the ldquo1rdquo bits. We show, for the first time, that Ni may increase or decrease, i. e. fluctuate, with temperature of operation, T, depending on the time interval between the previous and the next ldquo1rdquo bits.

This paper focused on developing a fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network management software tool named Smart Access network Testing, Analyzing and Database (SANTAD) ver 2.0 based on Visual Basic for transmission surveillance and fiber fault identification. SANTAD will be installed with optical line terminal (OLT) at central office (CO) to allow the network service providers and field engineers to detect a fiber fault, locate the failure location, and monitor the network performance downwardly from CO towards customer residential locations. SANTAD is able to display the status of each optical network unit (ONU) connected line on a single computer screen with capability to configure the attenuation and detect the failure simultaneously. The failure information will be delivered to the field engineers for promptly actions, meanwhile the failure line will be diverted to protection line to ensure the traffic flow continuously. The database system enable the history of network scanning process be analyzed and studied by the engineer.

This paper proposes a design and architecture of access control system to implement remote monitor and control for fiber to the home. Our solution works on a standard local area network (LAN) using a specially designed hardware interfaced with an Ethernet system rising PIC microcontroller. The developed design will be installed with optical line terminal (OLT) at the central office (CO). Protection switching is achieved automatically when failure occurs without interrupting customer service.
