The main knowledge management challenges are to capture, store and reuse contextual knowledge generated during interactions that occur daily in an organization. In this paper, we propose an activity context-aware architecture to support knowledge management in working processes. The required features for this architecture are processing, reasoning and sharing contextual knowledge involving information about activities performed. We also present results from evaluation of our proposal — A-CoBrA — for a specific domain.

We have proposed a checklist-based usability inspection technique (WDP - Web Design Perspectives-Based Usability Evaluation) specific for Web applications' usability evaluation and we are following an experimentation-based methodology to support its development and improvement. This paper describes an observational study conducted, aimed at eliciting how inspectors apply the WDP technique. We discuss the quantitative and qualitative results of the result and their impact on improving the WDP technique. We analyzed the qualitative data using the procedures from the Grounded Theory (GT) method. © 2009 IEEE.

The technical literature regarding Model-based Testing (MBT) has several techniques with different characteristics and goals available to be applied in software projects. Besides the lack of information regarding these techniques, they could be applied together in a software project aiming at improving the testing coverage. However, this decision needs to be carefully analyzed to avoid loss of resources in a software project. Based on this scenario, this paper proposes an approach with the purpose of supporting the unique or combined selection of MBT techniques for a given software project considering two aspects: the adequacy level between MBT techniques and the software project characteristics and impact of more than one MBT technique in some testing process variables. At the end, preliminary results of an experimental evaluation are presented.

In this paper we present the architecture for the Personal Autonomic Desktop Manager, a self managing application designed to act on behalf of the user in several aspects: protection, healing, optimization and configuration. The overall goal of this research is to improve the correlation of the autonomic self* properties and doing so also enhance the overall self-management capacity of the desktop (autonomicity). We introduce the Circulatory Computing (CC) model, a self-managing system initiative based on the biological metaphor of the cardiovascular system, and use its concepts in the design and implementation of the architecture.

Experimental studies have been used as a mechanism to acquire knowledge through a scientific approach based on measurement of phenomena in different areas. However it is hard to run such studies when they require models (simulation), produce amount of information, and explore science in scale. In this case, a computerized infrastructure is necessary and constitutes a complex system to be built. In this paper we discuss an experimentation environment that has being built to support large scale experimentation and scientific knowledge management in software engineering.

Software technologies, such as model-based testing approaches, have specific characteristics and limitations that can affect their use in software projects. To make available knowledge regarding such technologies is important to support the decision regarding their use in software projects. In particular, a choice of model-based testing approach can influence testing success or failure. Therefore, this paper aims at describing knowledge acquired from a systematic review regarding model-based testing approaches and proposing an infrastructure towards supporting their selection for software projects. Reference architectures are the basis for application instantiation in both Domain engineering and Product Line contexts. They are created based on domain requirements, commonalities, and variability. Considering that one of the essential sources of information in this context is the existing systems available in the domain, reverse engineering becomes a key activity to assist in reference architectures specification. Although many approaches consider reengineering existing systems to help in reusable components extraction and variability identification, they do not propose an approach, with well-defined activities and criteria, to support reference architectures specification from existing systems. In this context, this paper describes an approach to help in this task covering three macro-Activities, namely: reverse engineering focusing on architectural elements recovery;recovered architecture quality evaluation;and domain commonalities and variability identification. These activities are guided by general criteria, which can be reused across domains, and are supported by a tool set integrated to a reuse based software development environment, i.e. the Odyssey environment. The Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technology has been proposed to support different traffic classes with distinct quality of service (QoS) requirements in broadband metropolitan area networks. Therefore, as part of its specifications, such a system must properly address the combined requirements of wireless communications and multimedia applications. We propose in this paper an extension to the MAC protocol presented in [1, 2], by assigning variable priorities to the network stations sharing access to the communication channel. An analytical model to evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol is also developed and results obtained for the messages waiting times at different stations are presented. In addition, simulation data are used to compare the results obtained from the analytical model presented previously. It is concluded that the proposed variable priority MAC protocol is able to improve channel utilization and provide throughput and queueing delay fairness among the stations in the network. © 2006 SBrT.
