The function of the basement is to carry the weight of the upper structure into the soil and to resist lateral loads around the basement wall. One aspect of geotechnical engineering that often a problem in basement wall planning is the determination of lateral ground pressure in the basement wall due to earthquake which must be held by the basement wall. In this study, an analysis of the effects of local soil conditions due to dynamic loads is done through analysis of soil-structure interaction. The analysis is done by modeling the local soil with variations in basement depth and the adjacent basement distance to get the lateral pressure distribution due to dynamic load. The analyzed soil conditions are considered homogeneous at land sites SE (soft soil) with the dynamic load input from earthquake loads uses a 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years (500 years). The most influential parameter for soil displacement is the distance of the basement and then the depth of the basement. The most influential parameter on lateral forces is the depth of the basement followed by the distance of the basement.

An earthquake resistant structure should be able to perform as expected when it's struck by an earthquake such as it may experience slight damage and should be able to be repaired to its original state when struck by a design level earthquake. However, there are still debates whether reparation should also be viable when structures are experiencing severe damage. There are still a little to no studies about repairing severely damaged structures, therefore a study was made to see how severely damaged structures behaved after being repaired. Two beam column joints are used as specimens, which were severely damaged by an earthquake simulation before getting repaired. Both their initial and repaired condition are then modeled analytically using SAP2000. Their behaviors such as plastic hinges, joint's shear deformation, bond slip, and rebars' residual strain and stress due to previous loading are also implemented to the model. Although the lateral strength of the specimens are similar to their analytical model, the other behavior, especially their stiffness is not similar, therefore needing another parameter implemented in the model.

Comparative study of asphalt concrete characteristic between ideal gradation and laboratory tested gradation with crumb rubber

Modifying asphalt concrete with using Crumb Rubber (CR) can provide environmental benefits. The method used in this study is an experimental laboratory with Mashall machine. The tests used two types of gradation, namely the gradations of Ideal and Laboratory Test. CR used in a mixture with a dry process method to replacement 0%, 5%, 15% and 20% of the weight aggregate at fraction No. 30 (0.6 mm). The results showed that the Ideal gradation mixture has a better characteristic than the mixture of laboratory tested gradations. Ideal gradations can increased stability into 10% from Laboratory Test gradations for mixture without CR. Addition of CR contect in AC mixture did not significantly effect for the characteristics. To ensure the effect of CR in mixture, further test must be taken.

The Effect of EPS Addition to Soil Stabilized with Fly Ash as Lightweight Fill Materials for Embankment Construction

Design and construction of road embankment presents several challenges, including the possibility of bearing capacity failure, large total settlement, differential settlement, and slope instability, which may result from the weight of the embankment construction itself, and/or weak foundation. A number of techniques have been developed and can be used to overcome these problems, one of them is by modifying the weight of the embankment itself with the use of lightweight materials, such as soil-EPS mixture. The use of soil-EPS mixture as lightweight material provides several advantages, among which can achieve the same volume or elevation requirement with a significantly lighter weight compared to ordinary materials, improving slope stability, embankment over high compressibility soil, and to reduce soil pressure to soil retaining structures, abutment or bridge pillar. Fly ash also added to act as binder to increase shear strength of mixture. The result of the compaction test shows that the addition of a small amount of EPS to the mixture can significantly reduce the maximum dry density of the mixture. Triaxial UU and UCS test results show a reduction in mixture strength as EPS contents increase, but due to the presence of fly ash increases the strength of mixture as the number of day increases, so that the use of lightweight materials has the potential to be one of soil improvement solutions.

Liquid waste with a high amount of total suspended solids (TSS) is one of the significant environmental issues from coal mining activities in Kalimantan island under high precipitation in of an extensive zone of coverage. The TSS concentration with Nano-sized particle in mine drainage is caused by clay minerals which are dominated by montmorillonite type. Therefore, a vast chemical agent is usually used to treat TSS concentrations of liquid waste less than 300 mg/L based on government regulation. However, in this case, the chemical flocculant triggers the onset of secondary pollutant because of carcinogenic and non-biodegradable conditions. This study aims to observe specific fungi, Marasmius sp, as bio-flocculant for the treatment of mine drainage with extra high TSS. The fungi can produce a biodegradable polymer that precipitate the montmorillonite with two-mode action, namely bio-flocculant polymerization and mycelial trapping. A role model was performed in a laboratory-scale less than 1 L in several graduated/measuring cylinders under 22-30 °C. The results of clarity and flocculation rate tests indicated that the minerals in the mine drainage samples from *** mining excavation area, had been precipitated rapidly. The clarity test by using spectrophotometer indicated that eighty six percent (86%) clarity value averagely in one-hour treatment, while the TSS concentration amount decreased down to 110.1 mg/L from original measured at 11,000 mg/L based on the flocculation rate test.

Dynamic Analysis of Steel-Concrete Composite Building Floors Subjected to Human Rhythmic Activities

This work aims is to investigate the structural dynamic response of steel-concrete composite floors, when subjected to rhythmic human activities, based on experimental tests and numerical modelling, from the point of view of human comfort. The main focus of this paper is to study the effect of the dynamic interaction between the occupants and the floors, representing these people by SDOF biodynamic models (mass-spring-damper systems), in order to better evaluate the dynamic response and the vibration serviceability states. This way, the investigated structural model is related to a steel-concrete composite building which is composed of three floors used for aerobics classes, with dimensions of 20m × 20m, a total area of 1200m2 (3 × 400m2) and a ceiling height of 4m. The numerical modelling of the structure was performed by ANSYS program and was based on the finite element method (FEM). In order to evaluate the dynamic response of the investigated steel-concrete composite building, accelerations associated with 32 individuals practicing rhythmic activities were experimentally obtained to introduce them into the finite element model. Thus, the dynamic response of the building floors was evaluated in terms of the peak accelerations, RMS and VDV values, according to human comfort criteria and considering situations of the design practice. © 2017 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. Vibration Analysis and Human Comfort Investigation of a Steel-Concrete Composite Building under Nondeterministic Wind Loadings

Based on a favourable economic scenario combined with a significative technological advance in science materials and also construction processes, it must be emphasized that the Brazilian cities have shown substantial growth, regarding the construction of tall and slender buildings. This architectural trend has conducted the design of these buildings to solutions composed by very flexible structural systems, resulting in slender buildings with very low natural frequencies values and therefore more susceptible to problems of excessive vibrations, undesirable crack openings and even discomfort to the occupants. This way, having in mind the slenderness levels presented more recently, these buildings need to have their structural dynamic behaviour investigated, in order to ensure the human comfort. Thus, this research work aims to investigate the dynamic structural behaviour and also evaluates the human comfort of tall buildings, when subjected to the non-deterministic action of the wind. This way, the structural behaviour of a forty eight-storey steel-concrete composite building with 172.8m high subjected to the nondeterministic wind dynamic actions is investigated. The results obtained along the numerical analysis, in terms of the displacements and accelerations values, in time and frequency domain, are compared with the limits proposed by technical guides and design recommendations, aiming to evaluate the human comfort levels of the analysed building, regarding to the situations of the design practice. © 2017 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. The economic growth of a country will be greatly influenced by road and bridge infrastructure that serves as a connecting flow of goods and human transportation. There are still some road and bridge construction projects in Indonesia that show the occurrence of accidents because lack of awareness by the management of the adverse effects of safety. Therefore, the author tries to find solutions to the improvement measures in minimizing the occurrence of occupational accidents by providing safety knowledge to the Project Managers and related staff, to be more concerned about the safety and the environment around the project. Based on data collected from the Ministry of Public Works and Indonesian People's Housing, there are several work accidents in toll road projects in Indonesia from August 2017 to February 2018. When viewed from several of these accidents, it can be concluded that the main cause is the lack of knowledge of the management staff about the need to enforce safety regulations, especially in the work of lifting object to the upper structure. Therefore, a commitment is needed to implement serious occupational safety regulations from all stakeholders who play a role in developing this infrastructure project.

The use of stainless steel as formwork for concrete columns provides several benefits for the structure, including the high corrosion resistance, durability, fire resistance, ease of maintenance and high aesthetic value. The use of composite systems in columns has been a major breakthrough in bridges and viaducts. A particular advantage of the composite columns is the reduction of cross sectional area, speed of construction, easy maintenance and material saving when compared to conventional reinforced concrete structures. These advantages are related to the idea that the columns are concrete filled eliminating the use of forms and the need for extra steel reinforcing bars. The investigated system adopts a second carbon steel tube inside the primary stainless steel tube composing the structural system made of concrete-filled double skin composite tube columns (CFDSCT). This study aims to develop numerical models, using the finite element method and considering geometric imperfections. The structural behaviour was assessed through a nonlinear analysis and was later compared to compressive tests performed in the laboratory. After the completion of the numerical models calibration, a parametric analysis was performed to investigate the influence of parameters like the diameter, thickness and height of the stainless steel tube (outer) while its results were also compared to predictions made by traditional design equations. © Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. Structural performance of stainless lap bolted joints

The stainless steel employed in the structural elements present high corrosion resistance, durability, fire resistance and high aesthetic value compared to those constructed using carbon steel. In contrast, the stainless steel structures design is made following the requirements based on the carbon steel analogies. In fact, the structural performance of stainless steel is complex and dissimilar where some stainless grades presenting nonlinear tension versus strain curves without a defined yield plateau and large strain hardening. These properties influence on structural performance of the lap bolted joints. The Eurocode 3 pt. 1.4, one of the most adopted design codes, recommends two structural design criteria for the stainless steel elements under tension: ultimate resistance of the net cross-section at holes or plastic resistance of the gross cross-section. The present work aimed to investigate the structural response of lap bolted joints made of three stainless steel grades: austenitic, ferritic and duplex. Nonlinear numerical analyses has been carried out using ABAQUS 6.14 program where the response have shown a good agreement in terms of the maximum loads and failure modes when compared to the performed experiments. The results indicated a conservative level of safety from Eurocode 3 pt. 1.4 code provisions in comparison to the experimental results. © 2017 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co.
