On the delay factors of the private construction projects in Medan city

The delay in construction projects undertaken by contractors is impeding the economic growth of a region. Medan city which is one of the big cities in Indonesia is suffering from it. This study aims to identify the dominant factors causing delays in construction projects conducted by private contractors. The interview method with questionnaires is used to involve 20 contractors, 10 consultants, and 10 owner representatives in the study. From the 45 identified factors causing delays, the highest ranking is the change of work demand by the project owners with 71.84% importance index.

At the Unit Laka Lantas Polres Lhokseumawe determining accident-prone areas on roads in Lhokseumawe still using manual systems. Determination of accident-prone areas are less effective because the police Unit Laka Lantas Polres Lhokseumawe just using the data of the last year and had to repeatedly calculate manually accident-prone areas based on the number of human casualties. In this study the system implementation CUSUM method (Cummulative Summary) to determine the accident-prone areas designed using the web-based programming language PHP. In this system there are three processes to determine areas prone to accidents, the accident rate calculations based on the weighted severity, blacksite calculations using the Z-Score method for determining areas prone to accident blackspots and calculations using the CUSUM method to determine the critical points of an accident. The data used are secondary data obtained from the Police Unit Laka Lantas Polres Lhokseumawe years 2009-2013. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The high level of erosion that occur in Musi river basin has improved a tremendous impact on sedimentation in downstream areas and has resulted in many infrastructure of water is disturbed, such as silting of irrigation channels, siltation of rivers which disrupt the flow of transport stream and increasing the risk of flooding, high sedimentation in the port basin, low quality of water and the rising costs of water treatment. This study utilizes techniques terrain models Digital (Digital Elevation Model/DEM) to analysis the spatial distribution of the potential for erosion and sources of sedimentation, as well as the direction of the flow of sediment into channels as well as its relationship with outlet in branching river as the supplies to be sediment to the river flow. The method used in this study using a spatial model analysis with the help of GIS in analysing and presenting the level of erosion and deposition by utilizing modelling slope and kinetic energy of rainfall to estimate the index erosivity and distribution pattern of sediment into the river channel. This research was conducted at the upper Lematang river sub basin with area 412,638 Ha, which are classified into 11 sub-chatments with the highest altitude is 3.159 m above sea level (Dempo Valley) and the lowest is 126 m above sea level (Talang tinggi Valley). Analytical results have been tested by taking a fine sediment sampling in each sub-watershed in the analysis and is taken along the channel network and compare the observed patterns with the results predicted by the model analysis of soil erosion. Overall, erosion by high intensity tends to occur in the relationship between the different vegetation coverage, the barren land and open land used for farms and land used for mining. Approximately 45-65.5% slope bad condition because the vegetation has been open, so it can be seen the amount of erosion in the area is 2.139 ton/ha/year, at the sloping is 1.8239 ton / ha / year

The use of prestressed steel stayed columns systems in construction has numerous advantages related to its light weight, load bearing capacity and assembly process flexibility. A practical application of these structural systems could be recently observed in Brazil for the erection of the Rock in Rio III world stage. In this event the use of prestressed stayed carbon steel columns were used for temporary shoring, optimizing the erection sequence. The main stage had a 82 meters span with a 40 m clear height and a 4500 m2 area. Two stayed column were used, both with a 20 m length. Up to the present the majority of investigations of these stayed systems have been focused on carbon steel columns. In view of these facts the present paper aimed to present an investigation of the structural behaviour of columns made with the austenitic stainless steel. Numerical models were developed in the Ansys software, focusing on the structural system load carrying capacity and the optimal level of prestress to be used. The optimal level of prestress to be used was also determined considering the influence of initial imperfections. The results confirmed that the use of prestress in the cables significantly enhance the ultimate loads and ductility capacity of the columns. © Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. The current rapid assessment of post-earthquake damaged houses has been done manually. The determination of the damage level is also very subjective. Moreover, the available time during a rapid assessment and limited number of enumerators lead to ineffective decisions for responses and assistances. There are several application had appeared trying to answer the problems, but still they have many types of data that need to be input and even need a lot of time to process. The system design to be simple, more user-friendly and time efficient to be operated during the assessment. This study is aimed to develop a conceptual design of a system to collect data of houses damaged by earthquake using mobile application which propose to work both online and offline. The system will consists of five components: mobile device, user, data center (web server and database), internet, and data processing center (administrator and manager to verify and analyze the data). The application design to be integrated with Google Maps containing concise data entry to facilitate users (trained users and common users) and to shorten the time of data collection. Final collected data will be presented through the website and perform descriptive and spatial analysis.

The increasing of urban development and the decreasing of public awareness to environment promote flood every year for urban cities. Several lakes or ponds are sacrificed due to both urban development and landfilling. Bad habit of society to throw garbage to the lakes affects the society to think that the economic value of lakes could be increased by filling them with the land. These lead to make the lakes become vulnerable to sedimentation from urban activities. Universitas Indonesia as educational institution starts to develop how to manage sedimentation by hydrodynamics and sediment transport modelling. The research uses Resources Modelling Associates (RMA) program to run the model and Agathis Lake as the study area to perform the simulation. It is expected that the program output data could represent the field data, so the validation method should be conducted. The issue to validate the data would be problematic if simulation factors data could not accommodate real-world observed data. This study aims to employ Galerkin method to understand finite element method in Resources Modelling Associates program (RMA) in order to avoid black box when using it and to conduct a field study to perform calibration method of sediment transport modelling in the study area, Agathis Lake that is located in Universitas Indonesia.

This work aims is to investigate the structural dynamic response of steel-concrete composite floors, when subjected to rhythmic human activities, based on experimental tests and numerical modelling, from the point of view of human comfort. The main focus of this paper is to study the effect of the dynamic interaction between the occupants and the floors, representing these people by SDOF biodynamic models (mass-spring-damper systems), in order to better evaluate the dynamic response and the vibration serviceability states. This way, the investigated structural model is related to a steel-concrete composite building which is composed of three floors used for aerobics classes, with dimensions of 20m × 20m, a total area of 1200m 2 (3 × 400m 2 ) and a ceiling height of 4m. The numerical modelling of the structure was performed by ANSYS program and was based on the finite element method (FEM). In order to evaluate the dynamic response of the investigated steel-concrete composite building, accelerations associated with 32 individuals practicing rhythmic activities were experimentally obtained to introduce them into the finite element model. Thus, the dynamic response of the building floors was evaluated in terms of the peak accelerations, RMS and VDV values, according to human comfort criteria and considering situations of the design practice.

Based on a favourable economic scenario combined with a significative technological advance in science materials and also construction processes, it must be emphasized that the Brazilian cities have shown substantial growth, regarding the construction of tall and slender buildings. This architectural trend has conducted the design of these buildings to solutions composed by very flexible structural systems, resulting in slender buildings with very low natural frequencies values and therefore more susceptible to problems of excessive vibrations, undesirable crack openings and even discomfort to the occupants. This way, having in mind the slenderness levels presented more recently, these buildings need to have their structural dynamic behaviour investigated, in order to ensure the human comfort. Thus, this research work aims to investigate the dynamic structural behaviour and also evaluates the human comfort of tall buildings, when subjected to the non-deterministic action of the wind. This way, the structural behaviour of a forty eight-storey steel-concrete composite building with 172.8m high subjected to the nondeterministic wind dynamic actions is investigated. The results obtained along the numerical analysis, in terms of the displacements and accelerations values, in time and frequency domain, are compared with the limits proposed by technical guides and design recommendations, aiming to evaluate the human comfort levels of the analysed building, regarding to the situations of the design practice.

12.15: Structural performance of stainless lap bolted joints

The stainless steel employed in the structural elements present high corrosion resistance, durability, fire resistance and high aesthetic value compared to those constructed using carbon steel. In contrast, the stainless steel structures design is made following the requirements based on the carbon steel analogies. In fact, the structural performance of stainless steel is complex and dissimilar where some stainless grades presenting nonlinear tension versus strain curves without a defined yield plateau and large strain hardening. These properties influence on structural performance of the lap bolted joints. The Eurocode 3 pt. 1.4, one of the most adopted design codes, recommends two structural design criteria for the stainless steel elements under tension: ultimate resistance of the net cross-section at holes or plastic resistance of the gross cross-section. The present work aimed to investigate the structural response of lap bolted joints made of three stainless steel grades: austenitic, ferritic and duplex. Nonlinear numerical analyses has been carried out using ABAQUS 6.14 program where the response have shown a good agreement in terms of the maximum loads and failure modes when compared to the performed experiments. The results indicated a conservative level of safety from Eurocode 3 pt. 1.4 code provisions in comparison to the experimental results.

This paper aims selects sensitive features for damage identification in a railway bridge. For this purpose, a damage identification methodology based on a genetic algorithm and its application to the numerical model of a railway bridge is proposed. The identification method is based on an iterative process that in each iteration compares the values of the dynamic responses of a bridge for a test damage scenario with the response values for a reference damage scenario. The introduction of damage in the test numerical model is based on the modification of preselected numerical parameters values. The genetic algorithm allows the identification of damage by minimizing the residue of an objective function constructed from the responses of the test and reference model, and based on damage indicators. In this study damage indicators, based on the deck accelerations of the bridge subject to the action of the Alfa Pendular train defined as a set of moving loads, are defined and tested. The proposed methodology for identifying damage has been tested using a two-dimensional numerical finite element model of a railway bridge including the railway track. The results enabled the evaluation of the efficiency and reliability of the methodology and of the damage indicators which, in most situations, showed potential for the detection, location and quantification of the severity of the damage. © civil-Comp Press, 2016.
