Traffic flow and building parameters are analysed jointly to identify urban noise tendencies. For this purpose, the building parameter applied is the Floor Space Index (FSI). Acoustical and traffic flow data were collected and incorporated into a Geographical Information System (GIS). The fu-ture scenarios for this zone were created. For the FSI parameter, it was ver-ified that the higher the value of the average FSI, the higher the noise lev-els registered in urban canyons.

Indonesia is located in a seismically prone area. During the Aceh 2004, Yogyakarta 2006, Padang 2009 earthquakes, many casualties were caused by the collapse of buildings. Due to lack of awareness, knowledge and skills, many of these buildings, particularly non-engineered houses, were rebuilt using non-seismic resistant techniques as used previously. In cooperation with the World Housing Encyclopedia (WHE), a strategic way for promoting improved seismic resistant construction to Indonesian builders has been implemented. Architectural and civil engineering students are involved. A special tutorial is conducted periodically by seismic engineering experts to enable these students to learn practical seismic resistant techniques for designing and constructing single to two storey dwellings as well as multi storey reinforced concrete buildings. During their studies they are assigned to promote these techniques to the community at large and to builders in particular. A student e-network is set up to enable them to exchange ideas and encourage each other. The first phase of this effort is reported in this paper.

Influence of CDW Recycled Aggregate on Drying Shrinkage of Mortar

The use of fine recycled aggregates as raw material in the production of mortars appears as a good alternative to minimize waste disposal, so as to reduce natural resources consumption and to find and supply suitable substitutes for natural aggregates. However, the use of this alternative material in a safe way must be carried out by a wide investigation of its long term behavior. In this way, this paper will examine the mechanical strength, physical properties and drying shrinkage of mortar, which use recycled fine aggregates that have originated from construction and demolition waste (CDW) containing mortar (55%), ceramic (26%) and concrete (16%). Two natural mortars, made with natural sand, were produced with cement/sand ratios of 1:4 and 1:8 (by weight) and a fixed consistency index of 260 +10 mm. Recycled mortar was produced with 50% of substitution rate, in volume, of natural aggregate by recycled one. Results show that recycled mortars present higher total porosity, absorption rate and drying shrinkage than reference mortar.

Numerical evaluation of tubular perfobond shear connectors

Composite structures have been applied more frequently because they are an economical structural solution with excellent structural performance. The interaction is guaranteed with the use of elements that transfer the forces between these two materials. The most common mechanical connections between steel and concrete are made through shear connectors. Some of the connectors types used nowadays are stud bolt, U-profiles, Crestbond, Perfobond and T-Perfobond. Eurocode 4 prescribes that a connector has to possess a minimal ductility, one of the main requirements to shear connectors. The current Perfobond presents excellent resistant capacity, but low deformation capacity, contradicting what is prescribed by the code. This paper aims to study a Tubular Perforbond connector by analyzing the parameters that can influence its resistance and deformation capacity, applying FEM through Abaqus software, to simulate the composite structural, mechanical behaviour. When comparing the Tubular Perfobond connector with the Perfobond connector, it was possible to observe that the tubular connectors presented a substantial deformation capacity after peak load, while attending the connector ductility requirements. Influence of bearing coefficient in cold-formed stainless steel bolted connection

The connections play an important role in the overall behaviour of the structures. Therefore an adequate structural design taking into account both safe and economic criterion is necessary. The structural design of stainless steel bolted connections using actual codes can provide inadequate design capacity mainly due to the use of similar rules based on analogies from mild carbon structures. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to evaluate the structural response of stainless bolted connections considering the steel grade austenitic 304. Experimental and numerical analyses have been carried out considering bolted connection under bearing failure. In details, the study cases were subjected to two shear planes with thin-plate and thick-plate. In these cases, the occurrence of curling failures is possible. A detailed study involving the geometric parameters adopted by design equations of bolted stainless steel connections was made. The outcomes showed a reduction of the ultimate capacity characterised by out-plane deformation. In addition, the current codes led to significant difference when compared to both experimental and numerical results. © 2021 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. Facades inspection with infrared thermography: cracks evaluation

Infrared thermography is an evaluation technique that helps to identify anomalies and can provide information on their incidence and severity. The aim of this study is to apply quantitative thermography to study a case of severe cracks in facade analyzing the evolution of temperatures and Delta-T. The temperature evolution was studied over a day. There was sun incidence occurring during part of the day, allowing to calculate and assess the evolution of the associated temperatures. Thermograms were acquired hourly during the study period. The highest temperatures were observed at 12:00 noon, and the larger Delta-T between 10:00 and 12:00. There were differences between the Delta-T profiles among the three regions studied. The best time for analysis is when Delta-T is higher. Cracks with higher Delta-T were considered more degraded, and generalized branched cracks did not allow a comparative conclusion.

In this paper, an experimental and numerical study were developed to evaluate the behavior of stainless steel bolted connections subjected to shear load until rupture, in which austenitic stainless steel 304 was used. In order to determine the material behavior, tensile coupon tests were performed. The numerical model was developed in Abaqus finite element program using dynamic explicit analysis and solid elements (C3D8) with an elastic-plastic stress-strain curve with strain hardening and damage criteria. Additionally, a comparison of the results with the recommendations given by the current standards for stainless steel structures was also accomplished. © 2020 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. ASSESSMENT OF SHS TUBULAR T JOINTS SUBJECTED TO CHORD AXIAL FORCES

This paper aims to investigate the behaviour of T-type welded joints consisting of cold-formed steel square hollow sections (SHS), with β equal to 1.0, with and without sidewall plate reinforcement. A particular focus is on the preload effect in the chord, which is subjected to different levels of tension and compressive axial forces. For this purpose, a finite element numerical study was developed in ANSYS software, based on the development of calibrated models with experimental results. This paper presents an experimental and numerical analysis of 304 austenitic stainless steel hot-rolled equal leg angles with fixed end supports. The experimental programme consisted of material characterisation under tension and compression tests, initial geometrical imperfections measurements and full-scale tests to obtain ultimate loads and associated failure modes. Besides the experimental programme, a finite element numerical model was also developed to expand the studied sections and lengths through a parametric study to verify the accuracy of Eurocode 3 – Part 1.4 buckling curve. © 2020 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. The use of prestressed steel stayed columns systems in construction has numerous advantages related to its light weight, load bearing capacity and assembly process flexibility. A practical application of these structural systems could be recently observed in Brazil for the erection of the Rock in Rio III world stage. In this event the use of prestressed stayed carbon steel columns were used for temporary shoring, optimizing the erection sequence. The main stage had a 82 meters span with a 40 m clear height and a 4500 m2 area. Two stayed column were used, both with a 20 m length. Up to the present the majority of investigations of these stayed systems have been focused on carbon steel columns. In view of these facts the present paper aimed to present an investigation of the structural behaviour of columns made with the austenitic stainless steel. Numerical models were developed in the Ansys software, focusing on the structural system load carrying capacity and the optimal level of prestress to be used. The optimal level of prestress to be used was also determined considering the influence of initial imperfections. The results confirmed that the use of prestress in the cables significantly enhance the ultimate loads and ductility capacity of the columns. © Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co.
