Preparing future professionals to act towards sustainable development: an analysis of undergraduate students' motivations towards voluntary activities

Considering the need to prepare students to act towards sustainable development, volunteering activities can be an effective mean for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to develop the required skills in students for it. In this sense, this research aims to analyse the reasons for undergraduate students to participate in voluntary activities. Data from 192 undergraduate students were collected to conduct this analysis. These students were divided into two groups: those that participate (or recently participated) of social projects and those that do not participate. Considering this feature as the dependent variable, seven independent variables were analysed through Binary Logistic Regression. From the seven variables analysed, two were validated as variables that affect the decision of students to engage in voluntary activities: 'Incentive from the HEI for students to participate in volunteer programs' (V4) and 'The student's own beliefs lead to voluntary work' (V7). Their odds ratios were 2.901 and 3.164, respectively. The findings of this research contribute to the literature about volunteering, since it explores the motivations that lead undergraduate students to engage in these activities. The findings showed the importance of HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) incentives towards volunteering, which emphasizes the role played by these institutions in students' actions.

COVID-19 and the administrative concepts neglected: reflections for leaders to enhance organizational development

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to discuss how COVID-19 pandemic forced several companies to reflect on their activities. Many organizational changes have been conducted and others will still be necessary. Some reflections are presented, as some aspects are well consolidated in academic literature while they are neglected by many leaders of companies. The authors believe that this viewpoint can support leaders to enhance organizational development. Design/methodology/approach Part of the information presented here is characterized by the authors' points of view, as it is a viewpoint. However, the authors carried out searches on scientific bases and published press reports aiming to support the reflections presented in this text. Findings The reflections presented in this viewpoint focus on the following aspects: periodic critical analysis of companies business models, business continuity management systems, risk management, resilience principles in supply chain management, necessary changes in production systems, occupational health and safety systems and new ways of working. For the authors, the correct conduction of these aspects can guarantee companies survival;however, many leaders worldwide still neglect them. Originality/value The reflections presented here can be useful for leaders interested in conducting a critical analysis in their business, considering necessary organizational changes to face the COVID-19 pandemic consequences.

Responses of forage watermelon genotypes submitted to different water supply

This study aimed to evaluate yield and physiological traits of plants and bromatological and morphological responses of fruits of forage watermelon genotypes under different water supply. Seven genotypes were used (BGCIA 228;BGCIA 239;Jojoba;BGCIA 228 x BGCIA239;BGCIA 228 x Jojoba;BGCIA 239 x Jojoba and BGCIA 991) and four water supplies (470;370;270 and 170 mm) during the crop cycle. The experimental design was a complete randomized blocks organized in split plots and in a 7 x 4 factorial arrangement with three replications. The photosynthesis, transpiration, stomatal conductance and leaf temperature were not affected by genotypes. Applying 170 mm of WS promoted lower photosynthesis (p = 0.0001), stomatal conductance (p = 0.0001), transpiration (p = 0.0001) and greater leaf temperature (p = 0.0084). Jojoba presented greater fruit weight (p = 0.03), plant yield (p = 0.02), fruit length (p = 0.01) and longitudinal diameter (p = 0.01) in comparison to BGCIA 228. Applying 270 mm of WS decreased DM (p < 0.0001) and 170 mm of WS increased ADF (p = 0.01). Genotype BGCIA 228 presented greater total carbohydrates (p = 0.03) and total soluble solids contents (p = 0.01), lower ether extract (p < 0.0001) and ADF (p = 0.006) compared to BGCIA 239. Water supply affects physiological and bromatological responses, and the genotypes promote differences in yield, bromatogical and morphological characteristics of forage watermelon.

Difficulties observed in hydroelectric turbine projects management: evidence from case studies

Purpose This study aims to analyze the difficulties observed in the management of three hydroelectric turbine projects developed by a large multinational company in the metal-mechanic segment, identifying those most critical. Design/methodology/approach Through a bibliographic search, difficulties throughout project management were identified. These difficulties were used as a research protocol to carry out three case studies in a hydroelectric turbine manufacturer. The projects selection aimed to contemplate different characteristics to encompass the diversity of their typologies. Data were analyzed through content analysis technique and the difficulties were ordered via Grey Relational Analysis (GRA). Findings Qualitative data analysis provided specific insights regarding the characteristics of each project. When analyzing the difficulties of hydroelectric turbine projects management via GRA, it is observed that those difficulties most evidenced were related to integration and communication, suppliers management and objectives definition. Originality/value The main contribution of this research lies in the sector under analysis. The literature about hydroelectric turbine projects is scarce. In addition, no similar studies were found in the literature.

Purpose The seventh United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 7) is broadly characterised by ensuring affordable and clean energy for all. Considering the need for research associated with SDGs in developing countries, the Brazilian economy importance and its energy matrix, the purpose of this study is to evaluate how Brazil has been acting in favour of 7th SDGs targets. Design/methodology/approach The methodological strategy used was a survey conducted with 42 energy planning specialists who know the Brazilian reality. Data were analysed via averages and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) technique. Findings The results show that, in general, the actions taken by Brazil to achieve the goals related to SDG 7 have been developed in a simply and punctually form, needing to move considerably towards developing more planned activities;with this, satisfactory and consolidated results are expected on a national scale. Originality/value The information presented can significantly contribute to the broadening of debates associated with sustainable development and energy planning, for both academic and political-economic spheres. Information present here can support future more profound studies, and these, in turn, support the Brazilian government in better actions to achieve the SDG 7 targets.

Preparing future entrepreneurs: reflections about the COVID-19 impacts on the entrepreneurial potential of Brazilian students

Purpose: This viewpoint aims to present reflections on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic scenario and the entrepreneurial potential of Brazilian students. Guidelines are proposed to support debates in the academic environment and better prepare future entrepreneurs to the labour market. Design/methodology/approach: Since this is a viewpoint article, some statements presented here are characterised by the authors' opinions. However, for a better foundation, bibliographic research related to the theme was carried out. Findings: In the authors' point of view, the COVID-19 pandemic scenario may negatively influence the decisions of Brazilian students that are characterised as potential future entrepreneurs. Educators can use the guidelines presented here to conduct debates with students in order to clarify aspects related to profile, behaviour and other issues. Originality/value: By understanding better entrepreneurial aspects in the COVID-19 pandemic scenario, Brazilian students can make better decisions. Purpose This article aims to evaluate the integration level of a quality management system (QMS) and an environmental management system (EMS) in a tire manufacturer and propose a guide to evaluate the integration of these systems in companies. Design/methodology/approach The methodological strategies used in this research were literature review;and case study, with interviews to verify professionals' perception about benefits from integration. Data from interviews were analyzed through Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Findings The results showed that the studied company has a simple level of integration, observing only some low intensity benefits. Thus, it was recommended that the company partially integrate its management systems (MSs) before evolving into something more complex. The literature and the findings of case study were used as basis for proposing a guide to evaluate MS integration. Originality/value Lessons learned throughout the study and the suggested guide can support other companies to assess the integration level of their QMS and EMS. Thus, the findings presented here can be useful for researchers and managers.

Purpose This study aims to discuss the difficulties faced by two large Brazilian industrial companies in technological innovation management. Design/methodology/approach Initially, a literature review is carried out using meta-synthesis technique to consolidate an expanded and detailed framework that complemented and dialoged with the difficulties presented by Oslo Manual. The difficulties presented in this framework were used as an instrument to conduct two case studies. Findings There were several findings, especially the adherence to the structured framework and the identification of short-term management and inflexibility of the regulatory environment as relevant difficulties for both companies. Originality/value The understanding of these difficulties can contribute to optimizing manufacturers performance in innovation processes. Although only two companies were analyzed, their magnitude and relevance in the sectors they belong to should be highlighted. The information presented here can greatly contribute to expanding the debates about the management of innovation by companies in emerging countries.

Purpose This paper aims to present reflections on the COVID-19 pandemic impacts in the search for the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8) disseminated by the United Nations. These reflections are made considering the Brazilian scenario. Design/methodology/approach As this paper is a viewpoint, several information presented here are based on authors' opinion. However, to enhance the information basis and present examples, a bibliographic research was also conducted. Findings Analyzing the targets of SDG 8 and the probable crisis in the Brazilian economy as a consequence of the pandemic, the authors believe that this crisis will impact the achievement of these targets. Practical implications The reflections presented here can contribute with the debates about the search for decent work in Brazil. It is worth to remember that the development of actions aligned with SDG 8 targets generates more than only economic gains, as these contribute for building a more just, egalitarian and inclusive society. Originality/value This viewpoint calls attention to issues that demand urgent public policies;otherwise, these issues can generate losses to an entire generation of Brazilians.

Bibliometric study on SDG 6: analysing main content aspects by using Web of Science data from 2015 to 2021

Purpose The purpose of the article is to understand how the literature has been addressing the United Nations' Sixth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to obtain an overview of the current scenario and future perspectives. Design/methodology/approach For that, a bibliometric analysis will be conducted with documents published between 2015 and 2021 and present in the Web of Science database. Initially, 328 documents were identified, and after careful reading of titles and abstracts, 239 documents were analysed. The documents were analysed using tools available on the Web of Science database and the software Bibliometrix. Findings Amongst the results generated, it should be highlighted the identification of the motor themes "sustainable development" + "developing countries" and "water security", presenting a significant relevance to the field and a high development level. In addition, "human rights" was verified as an emerging theme in the context of SDG 6 debates. Originality/value The information provided here offers good documentation of the extent to which SDG 6 is documented in the literature and can be helpful for researchers interested in the topic.
