COVID-19 and decent work: A bibliometric analysis

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among these impacts, those related to the SDG 8 can be highlighted. Consequently, the literature has addressed aspects related to economic growth and decent work. OBJECTIVE: This article aimed to evaluate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on decent work according to the literature. METHODS: For this, a bibliometric analysis was conducted. Data from Web of Science were collected, and VOSviewer software was used to perform the analysis. RESULTS: Regarding the results, four main clusters that govern the subject were identified. A first cluster (identified in red) evidenced the consequences of the pandemic to the generation of informal work, increasing poverty and the impacts on gender issues. A second cluster (identified in blue) addresses mental health and stress issues, especially for nurses professionals who experience a situation in the COVID-19 pandemic. The green cluster focused on unemployment, precarious employment, and work conditions, which were highly related to coronavirus contagion. Finally, the yellow cluster evidenced the final consequences when there is a substantial public health problem. CONCLUSIONS: The results presented here can be helpful to researchers interested in the, as it allows a broad and condensed view of important information about a relevant topic for sustainable economic development.

Predictive variables for feelings of sadness and depression while working remotely in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND: Remote work was evidenced in the pandemic and studies in this area increased. Most studies focus on professionals of companies or professors/students in the academic environment. At the same time, non-academic staff, that provide all the support required for the core activities of the institutions (research/teaching/extension activities) have been neglected. OBJECTIVE: This article aims to exploratory analyse which variables (interruptions when working remotely (1), health concerns (2) and fear of contracting coronavirus (3), anxiety and concern about professional career (4), frustration to have cancelled plans and missed opportunities (5) and gender (6)) can impact feelings of sadness and depression experienced by non-academic staff of a university working remotely. METHODS: Using a database on behaviour and feelings of non-academic staff from a Brazilian university working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, a binary logistic regression model was structured. In an exploratory manner, six independent variables (presented in the previous item) were analysed in terms of their ability to predict the dependent variable (feelings of sadness and depression). RESULTS: The results presented the prediction power of the independent variables for the dependent variable. The variables regarding concern with their health, increased anxiety and concern about their career presented Odds Ratios of 3.6 (1.4-8.5 - 95% C.I.) and 3.3 (2.2-5.0 - 95% C.I.), respectively, standing out from the other variables. CONCLUSIONS: These results focus on staff at one institution, but they can contribute to better understand feelings and behaviours experienced by professionals working remotely and provide information for debates on the field of COVID-19related changes of work.

Geology and U-Pb detrital zircon geochronology coupled with zircon fission tracks of the Jauru formation of Parecis Basin, Brazil

The Jauru Formation fills a symmetric NNW-trending graben whose basement is represented by Calymmian granitic intrusions and the paleoprotorezoic and mesoproterozoic metavolcanic sequence of the Jauru Terrane. The graben represents an intracratonic basin with glacial siliciclastic sequence dominated by lake sediments consisting of conglomerates, fine sandstones, siltstones and shales. The Late Carboniferous timing of basin filling is suggested by Cristatisporites sp. palynomorphs. The detrital zircons U-Pb data shows several ages, highlighting the source areas at 0.9 Ga (Sunsas and Aguapei Belts), 1.3 Ga (Paragua Terrane), 1.4 Ga (Rio Alegre and Jauru Terranes), 1.5 Ga (Jauru Terrane), and 1.8 Ga (Jauru and Paragua Terranes), as well as ages in the Neoarchean (similar to 2.8 Ga) and Siderian (2.1 Ga). The spectrum of U-Pb ages in detrital zircons of the Jauru Formation shows that the ages of the zircons are much older than the Mississippian age of basin formation, suggesting that the Jauru Formation was generated in an extensional continental setting without magmatism. Data from detrital zircon FTM suggest at least three continental exhumation or heating/cooling cycles related to long-lived Pangea breakup. The second and more representative cycle is probably coeval to continental flood basalts of Anari and Tapirapua Formation, during Upper Triassic and Lower Jurassic. The first (280 Ma) and third (150 Ma) events, are not clearly related to regional or continental geological processes in the South American Platform interior.

Vegetative-hydraulic parameters generated by agricultural crops for laminar flows under a semi-arid environment of Pernambuco, Brazil

The structural parameters of vegetation have an important influence on the resistance imposed to shallow flow under the soil, being important in the control of floods, water erosion and sediment transport in the watersheds. Therefore, in order to obtain the hydraulic characteristics of overland flow, the variables of hydraulic resistance generated by the vegetation to surface flow, and the interrill erosion rates under semi-arid region led to the introduction of agricultural crops, through which shallow flows were generated on elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum), corn (Zea mays sp.) and in a bare Entisol, placed in a toeslope landscape position. Results showed that the flow regime was slow, laminar and interrill erosion occurred (Re < 500 and Fr < 1). Nevertheless, the hydraulic characteristics of overland flow (Vm, h, q and log were probably affected by the proximity to the water table, a hypothesis supported by the obtained values for the infiltration. However, corn and principally elephant grass showed high hydraulic resistance to superficial flow and interrill erosion conferred by the highest ground coverage (lowest Ci = 0.198), by the effect of the sub-factors CiI, CiII and CiIII, and the lowest values of sediment concentration (CS), runoff coefficient (C), interrill detachment rate (Di), and soil loss (SL). Our results support the purpose of introducing agricultural crops in the Brazilian semi-arid region since increasing resistance to interrill erosion can be provided. Elephant grass is a more appropriate crop to be inserted under land management protocols in the semi-arid environment.

Carotenoids are isoprenoid pigments used in food, chemical, textile, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. They act not only as dyes and provitamins A but also have antioxidants, photoprotective, antimicrobial properties, among others. This class of pigment can be obtained traditionally by plants or chemical synthesis, but they have some disadvantages. In recent years, search for alternative sources has been an important strategy for the carotenoid industries. Microbial synthesis is an alternative that has shown good yields, speed, and reduced production costs. Hostile environments, such as the Caatinga domain, represent an interesting source of microorganisms that produce biomolecules, especially carotenoids, because of oxidative stress caused by sunlight. Thus, this region has been attracting the attention of the scientific community and industry for the use of these organisms in the production of carotenoids and applications in cosmetic products;since these compounds have interesting antioxidant and photoprotective properties. In this review, general characteristics of carotenoids, sources of production, industrial applicability, and commercialization will be discussed, as well as perspectives on the production of carotenoids from microorganisms isolated from the Caatinga and their application in anti-UV products.

Promising Biosurfactant Produced by Cunninghamella echinulata UCP 1299 Using Renewable Resources and Its Application in Cotton Fabric Cleaning Process

A biosurfactant was produced from Cunninghamella echinulata using sustainable technology for cleaning and degreasing of cotton fabric impregnated with burned motor oil. The surface tension was 32.4mN/m on a medium containing instant noodle waste (2%), corn steep liquor (2%), and postfrying oil (0.5%) with a carbon/nitrogen ratio of 30 : 1, yield of 6.0 g.L-1, emulsifier index of 81.4%, and dispersant property of 32.15 cm(2). The biosurfactant produced is a glycolipid constituted by carbohydrate (47.7%) and lipids (50.0%). The structure was confirmed by GC-MS (stearic acid in predominance with mass of 298 m/z), FTIR spectroscopy (polysaccharides in bands between 1025 and 1152 cm(-1) and fatty acids in bands between 2057 and 3100 cm(-1)), 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectrum (carbohydrates in signal of 4.38 ppm and 77.0 ppm). The properties of cleaning and degreasing of burned engine oil in cotton fabric by biosurfactant of C. echinulata was evidenced by removal of 86% of oil. After use of the biosurfactant, the fibers were not damaged, which is important for structural integrity of cotton fabric after the wash. In addition, the biosurfactant did not show toxic effect., is study suggests that the biosurfactant from C. echinulata can be used in formulation of textile detergents, in particular for removal of hydrophobic residues from the automobile industry.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present the role of aspects related to public leadership in the actions developed by three state universities in Sao Paulo (Brazil) in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, namely the University of Campinas (Unicamp), University of Sao Paulo (USP) and Sao Paulo State University (Unesp). Design/methodology/approach Since this is a viewpoint article, part of the information presented is characterized by the authors' points of view. It should be highlighted, however, that the information provided is based on searches in scientific bases, institutional websites and published press reports. Findings According to the authors, aspects of public leadership are being properly employed by the public servants of the analyzed universities, resulting in the positive actions that have been implemented. Originality/value There is no existing literature on public leadership in these Brazilian universities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Industry 4.0 and corporate sustainability: An exploratory analysis of possible impacts in the Brazilian context

This paper aims to analyse the impacts of Industry 4.0 on corporate sustainability, considering the Brazilian context. From a literature review, 12 impacts were identified and used to structure a questionnaire. This questionnaire was applied in a survey with experienced Brazilian researchers. The data was analysed using Hierarchical Cluster Analysis, Descriptive Statistics and TOPSIS, which allowed for impact ordering. It was evidenced that all the presented impacts will be evident in the Brazilian context in a ten-year horizon. Of these impacts, six stand out: 1) the reduction of job offers for manual and repetitive activities and the emergence of new, high value-added professions;2) the emergence of innovative business;3) the reduction of work accidents due to the expanded use of robots in dangerous tasks for humans;4) problems with the employees' qualification pace in the required modernisation changes;5) the integration of all value chain activities, allowing for a better analysis of environmental, social and economic impacts;and 6) improvements in physical and cognitive ergonomics due to the use of sensors. These findings can contribute to the expansion of the debates related to the theme and can be used as a base for defining future industrial policies in Brazil.

Effects of rehabilitation strategies on soil aggregation, C and N distribution and carbon management index in coffee cultivation in mined soil

Mining can be considered one of the most impacting activities in the soil, since it requires the removal of the vegetation and superficial soil layer, demanding the later recovery of the area. Given this, in this study, we assess the soil rehabilitation in a bauxite-mined area after three years of the field experiment installation through the determination of the total and labile C and N contents, in addition to the carbon management index (CMI), in soil and in stable aggregates separated into three classes (macro: 4.75-2.0 mm, meso: 2.00-0.25 mm and micro: 0.25-0.053 mm). Among the rehabilitation strategies, different combinations of fertilizations and ground cover plants intercropping with coffee, were evaluated. Results revealed that among all the treatments with fertilization, the highest water-stable macroaggregates (+80%), MWDW (2.86 mm), GMD(W) (2.02 mm), AGRI(W) (81.48%) and SAI(W) (89.21%) in the 0-20 cm soil layer were recorded in organic fertilization + brachiaria treatment (OF/B), close to native vegetation (NV). These indices were characterized as good indicators of macroaggregation and soil quality;however, the mesoaggregates reflected the differences in the dynamics of C and N due to the influence of management systems. In the soil, the plots under organic and chemical fertilization + brachiaria (OF + CF/B) had more TOC (22.11), TN (1.49), LOC (1.44), LN (0.054) g kg(-1), respectively, and CMI (33.06%). Significant effect of the OF + CF fertilization was only observed in aggregate size of meso and microaggregates. TOC and TN contents were higher in the mesoaggregates, but not higher than the soil, however, LOC and CMI had higher values in the macroaggregates, higher than the soil. In general, when OF/B was used, the macroaggregation increased by 27.6%, MWDw (7.51%), the GMDw (48.52%), and OF + CF/B, the TOC (63%) and TN (67%) in relation to the pre-mined area. Extensive reforestation may be required to avert dramatic loss of biodiversity, system resilience and ecosystem services from Brazil's Atlantic Forest, and is legally required by Brazil's Forest Code. Restoration on farmland however threatens agricultural output and the livelihoods of small family farmers, leading to weak enforcement of the law and a national debate over the Code which resulted in revisions in 2012 that significantly reduced legally mandated restoration. To inform the design of effective environmental policies, we interviewed 60 typical dairy family farmers utilizing pasture-based agroecological grazing practices to assess their perceptions and knowledge of the pre-2012 Forest Code, its impacts and their willingness to comply. Multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) identified three distinct clusters: farmers who understood the forest code and its ecological impacts and were willing to comply;farmers who understood the ecological benefits of restoration, but were unwilling to comply;and those with little knowledge of benefits or interest in compliance. We evaluate three policy options for promoting restoration, paying particular attention to their impacts on farmer livelihoods and on their intrinsic willingness to restore and preserve forest cover. We conclude that payments for ecosystem services in the form of subsidies for agroecology practices are promising. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
