Chronic wounds have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life, necessitating the management of pain, infection, bleeding, and emotional challenges. Debridement, which involves the removal of nonviable tissue, is crucial for promoting wound healing. In addition to surgical methods, cost-effective alternatives such as local solutions and ointments with biological properties have been explored. The use of natural compounds with anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and collagen-synthesizing abilities holds promise for wound healing. This in vitro and in vivo preclinical study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of a wound healing ointment containing bioactive ingredients derived from medicinal plants (extracts, essential oils, and vegetable oils). The chemical composition of the ointment was characterized using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to gain insights into its synergistic action. Preclinical tests were conducted following standardized protocols. FTIR analysis revealed similarities between the product’s spectrum and that of bioactive compounds. The in vitro tests demonstrated that all formulations of the ointment induced no cell death, DNA damage, or acute toxicity in cell cultures (p < 0.05). No lethal dose was observed, indicating the safety of the ointment at all concentrations. The ointment also stimulated a notably more organized, significantly higher collagen production compared to control groups (p < 0.05). In vivo preclinical analyses also demonstrated no adverse responses being effective in the healing process compared to the control group (silver sulfadiazine) in terms of wound contraction and ulcer re-epithelization (p < 0.05). Significantly higher means of wound contraction were observed in the groups treated with the bioactive-containing ointment when compared to both the positive control group (sulfadiazine) and the control untreated groups (p < 0.05). Influence of Dentin Priming with Tannin-Rich Plant Extracts on the Longevity of Bonded Composite Restorations

Objective. This in vitro study evaluated the influence of bioactive plant extracts as dentin biomodifying agents to improve the longevity of bonded restorations. For that, plant extracts were applied to the dentin surface prior to the adhesive system. materials and Methods. Bovine incisors were ground flat to obtain 2 mm thick slices in which conical preparations were made (N = 10). Tannin-containing plant extracts were applied to dentin before the application of the restorative system, as follows: control group (untreated, CTL), chlorhexidine 0.12% (CHX), mastruz (Dysphania ambrosioides, MTZ), cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa, CTC), guarana (Paullinia cupana, GUA), galla chinensis (Rhus chinensis, GCH), and tannic acid (extracted from Acacia decurrens, TNA). The push-out bond strength test was conducted (0.5 mm/min). Dentin biomodification was assessed by the modulus of elasticity and mass change in bovine tooth sections (0.5 × 1.7 × 7.0 mm). The dentin staining after extract treatments of dentin slices was compared. The dentin surface wettability was also evaluated by means of the contact angles of the adhesive system with the dentin surface and compared with the untreated control group. Data were subjected to ANOVA/Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results. The bond strength of the restoratives to dentin was not significantly improved by the plant extracts, irrespective of the evaluation time (p>0.05). Except for TNA, the elastic modulus of demineralized dentin significantly reduced after treatment with the plant extracts (p<0.05). The dentin staining correlated with the tannin content of the extracts. The contact angle was significantly reduced when treated with CTC, GCH, and TNA. Conclusions. The tannin-containing extracts had a questionable effect on the longevity of bonded restorations. The dentin modulus was negatively affected by the extract treatments. Tailoring structural and magnetic properties of NiCu nanowires by electrodeposition

In this work, we investigated the tailoring of structural and magnetic properties of NiCu nanowires through electrodeposition. Continuous (S1) and composition-modulated (S2) wires were fabricated by electrodeposition using porous alumina membranes as a template. Morphological characterization revealed that the total length of the wires was 8 ± 3 µm in both S1 and S2. For the composition-modulated wires, the length of the segments with the lowest and highest Cu concentrations was 1.2 ± 0.4 µm and 226 ± 65 nm, respectively. Mapping by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) revealed that the concentration of copper and nickel varied along the length of the composition-modulated nanowires, while the continuous nanowires contained a relatively constant concentration of both metals. It is demonstrated that the change in Cu concentration along the wire modifies the lattice parameter, average crystallite size (D) and lattice strain (ε) of Ni. This result is pivotal for understanding the magnetic properties of the wires, as nickel is primarily responsible for the magnetic behavior of the wires. From the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) results, the linewidth and resonance field values for samples S1 and S2 were determined. It was demonstrated that the greater deformation in the nickel lattice in NiCu nanowires increases the angular dependence of the resonance field. Furthermore, the smaller nickel crystallite size was shown to increase spin dispersion and magnetic damping, leading to complex behavior in FMR responses. Finally, it was demonstrated how Cu can influence the magnetic properties such as coercivity (H_C) and squareness (M_R/M_S) of the wires. Overall, this work contributes to understanding the tailoring of structural and magnetic properties of NiCu nanowires through electrodeposition. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Effects of TiO 2 waste on the formation of clinker phases and mechanical performance and hydration of Portand cement

The incorporation of different levels of UOW into Portland clinker raw meals and its effects on the clinker and cement properties were evaluated. Clinkers were produced and characterized by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and optical microscopy; the cements were produced and physically characterized. Finally, pastes were produced and analyzed using isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetry, XRD, and compressive strength tests. UOW, when added up to 1.29% in Portland clinker raw meal, acts as a mineralizer, increasing the content of alite by 6.44%. The incorporation of UOW reduces the hydration rate in the first days owing to the increase in the size of the alite crystals and delays the point of sulfate depletion due to the increase in the SO 3 content of the clinkers. Owing to the higher content of alite formed, the cement produced from the raw meal with 1.29% of UOW presents the highest early mechanical strength (up to 7 days).

Cement is the most widely used building material worldwide. Its production demands a large amount of natural resources, in addition to high energy consumption. Thus, the cement industry has been looking for solutions that effectively reduce the use of these resources as well as greenhouse gas emissions. This research aims to show the technical feasibility of incorporating civil construction waste (CCW) in the production of Portland cement. To this purpose, the physicochemical characterization of the raw materials used was carried out, dosage and manufacture of the raw mix, which were calcined at 1450 °C. Clinkers were characterized mineralogically, by means of XRD, to verify the formation of the crystalline phases. Subsequently, the clinkers were ground, resulting in Portland cements, and their physical-mechanical properties were evaluated. The results showed the potential of using CCW as an alternative raw material, since experimental cements presented performance similar to industrial cements used as a reference.

Generation and Propagation of Superhigh-Frequency Bulk Acoustic Waves in GaAs

Coherent superhigh-frequency (SHF) vibrations provide an excellent tool for the modulation and control of excitations in semiconductors. Here, we investigate the piezoelectric generation and propagation of longitudinal bulk acoustic waves (LBAWs) with frequencies up to 20 GHz in GaAs crystals using bulk acoustic-wave resonators (BAWRs) based on piezoelectric thin ZnO films. We show that the electroacoustic conversion efficiency of the BAWRs depends sensitively on the sputtering conditions of the ZnO films. The BAWRs are then used for the study of the propagation properties of the LBAWs in GaAs in the frequency and temperature ranges from 1 to 20 GHz and 10 and 300 K, respectively, which have so far not been experimentally accessed. We find that the acoustic absorption of GaAs in the temperature range from 80 K to 300 K is dominated by scattering with thermal phonons. In contrast, at lower temperatures, the acoustic absorption saturates at a frequency-dependent value. Experiments carried out with different propagation lengths indicate that the saturation is associated with losses during reflections at the sample boundaries. We also demonstrate devices with a high quality factor fabricated on top of acoustic Bragg reflectors. The results presented here prove the feasibility of high-quality acoustic resonators embedding GaAs-based nanostructures, thus opening the way for the modulation and control of their properties by electrically excited SHF LBAWs.

We hereby propose a software solution to perform high quality electrical measurements for the characterization of WORM (write-once read many), a new generation memory device which is being intensively studied for non-volatile data storage. The as-proposed software is completely based on .NET framework and sample C# code. The paper performed a relevant measurement based on this software. Working WORM devices, based on a polymeric matrix embedded with gold and copper sulfide nanoparticles, have been used for test measurements. The aim of this paper is to show the main steps to develop a fully working measurement software without using any expensive dedicated software.

Fingerprints are unique to each individual who contributes to human identification in forensic cases. In this sense, the present work aimed to synthesize 1H-pyrazol-1-yl-4-phenylthiazoles and apply them as powder agents to reveal latent finger marks as an alternative and low cost related to powders found on the market. The compounds were characterized by infrared; fluorescence; 1H NMR; 13C NMR; laser diffractometer and SEM. In addition, cytotoxicity was also evaluated in oral keratinocytes showing high cell viability. The result of the hemolytic assay revealed that compound 2a does not present red cell cytotoxicity. The prepared powders were applied to fingermarks deposited on different surfaces providing quality visualization at level three so that human identification is possible.

Objectives: The 12-item Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS–SF) is a widely used instrument for the assessment of self-compassion. To date, there have been few examinations of this instrument’s psychometric properties, particularly across nations and languages. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS) to assess measurement invariance of the SCS–SF across nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Methods: Participants (N = 56,968) from 65 nations completed the SCS–SF in 40 languages. Using these data, we tested various hypothesised models of the SCS–SF in the total sample and, using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, tested for invariance of the optimal model across national groups, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Results: In the total dataset, we found that an 11-item, 2-factor model (i.e., SCS-11) provided best fit to the data, with the two factors tapping distinct constructs of compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding. The SCS-11 was found to be partially scalar invariant across national groups and languages, and fully scalar invariant across gender identities and age groups. There was wide variation in latent means for the two factors, particularly across national groups and languages. Further analyses showed negligible associations between the two factors and sociodemographic variables, including marital status, financial security, and urbanicity. Conclusions: Our results suggest that it may be possible to derive a stable 2-factor model of the SCS–SF for use in cross-cultural research, but also highlight the likelihood of cross-national and cross-linguistic variations in the way that self-compassion is understood. © The Author(s) 2025.

The Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) is a widely used measure of a core facet of the positive body image construct. However, extant research concerning measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across a large number of nations remains limited. Here, we utilised the Body Image in Nature (BINS) dataset - with data collected between 2020 and 2022 - to assess measurement invariance of the BAS-2 across 65 nations, 40 languages, gender identities, and age groups. Multi-group confirmatory factor analysis indicated that full scalar invariance was upheld across all nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups, suggesting that the unidimensional BAS-2 model has widespread applicability. There were large differences across nations and languages in latent body appreciation, while differences across gender identities and age groups were negligible-to-small. Additionally, greater body appreciation was significantly associated with higher life satisfaction, being single (versus being married or in a committed relationship), and greater rurality (versus urbanicity). Across a subset of nations where nation-level data were available, greater body appreciation was also significantly associated with greater cultural distance from the United States and greater relative income inequality. These findings suggest that the BAS-2 likely captures a near-universal conceptualisation of the body appreciation construct, which should facilitate further cross-cultural research.
