Water supply utilities have been increasingly looking for solutions to reduce water wastage. Many efforts have been made aiming to promote a better management of this resource. Fraud detection is one of these actions, as the irregular violations are usually held precariously, thus, causing leaks. In this context, the use of technology in order to automate the identification of potential frauds can be an important support tool to avoid water waste. Thus, this research aims to apply pattern recognition techniques in the implementation of an automated detection of suspected irregularities cases in water meters, through image analysis. The proposed computer vision system is composed of three steps: the detection of the water meter location, obtained by OPF classifier and HOG descriptor, detecting the seals through morphological image processing and segmentation methods;and the classification of frauds, in which the condition of the water meter seals is assessed. We validated the proposed framework using a dataset containing images of water meter inspections. At the last step, the proposed framework reached an average accuracy up to 81.29%. We concluded that a computer vision system is a promising strategy and has potential to benefit the analysis of fraud detection. Copyright 2017 ACM.

In the quest to engage and motivate users on the use of mobile applications, the gamification concept has been excelling in the market since incorporates game elements in a non-game context. Scoring systems, challenges, competitions and badges, are some of the elements implemented in many fields, such as health, education, ecological awareness, among others. In this context, this study aimed to systematically review available literature to identify gamification strategies used in mobile applications. A search was conducted in ACM, Science Direct and Scopus databases, from March to June 2016. A total of 402 studies were found, 23 of which met the eligibility criteria. The results demonstrated the heterogeneity of gamification elements being used and the impact they caused in the applications, especially as a motivational factor for users. This study provides the basis for future research on gamification methods and emphasizes the importance of this concept to increase engagement and provide enjoyment to users. © 2017 AISTI.

This paper aims to identify and analyze recommender systems developed for the health area, available in mobile applications. Therefore, literature was reviewed systematically from ACM, IEEE, Springer and Science Direct databases. 1006 studies were found, eight of which met the eligibility criteria. From the chosen studies, only one was not applied to the areas of nutrition and physical activity. The recommender techniques adopted were Collaborative Filtering and Content-based Filtering. The main mobile device identified was the Smartphone and the Operating System was Android. After analyzing the results, it was possible to realize that, although they are widely used in ecommerce, recommendation systems do not have many mobile healthcare applications, and the existing ones are recent. © 2017 AISTI.

The interest in human phenotypes has leveraged interdisciplinary efforts encouraging a better understanding of the broad spectrum of psychological and behavioral disorders. Moreover, the usage of mobile and wearable devices along with unobtrusive computational capabilities provides an extensive amount of information that allows the characterization of phenotypes. This article describes the human phenotype through the lens of computational range and reviews state-of-the-art computational phenotyping. Furthermore, the article discusses computational phenotyping’s extension concerning the combination of intelligent environments and personal mobile devices, addressing technical, managerial, and ethical challenges. This combination reinforces ubiquitous computational capabilities for phenotyping as a facilitator of interdisciplinary information convergence in favor of clinical and biomedical research. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

This paper discusses an approach to generate VHDL descriptions from high-level specifications, specifically UML/MARTE models that include aspect-oriented semantics. Standard UML diagrams describe the handling of functional requirements, whereas crosscutting concerns associated with the non-functional requirements are handle by aspects. UML-to-VHDL transformation is performed automatically by a script-based code generation tool named GenERTiCA. For that, mapping rules scripts define how to generate VHDL constructs from model elements, including the implementation of aspects adaptations. The generated VHDL description does not require any manual modification, in order to be fully synthesized onto a FPGA device. Some case studies have been performed to evaluate the proposed approach, however, this paper discusses the line-following robot implemented as a FPGA-based embedded system. An improvement in system design has been obtained, namely an increase in system performance and a better utilization of FPGA reconfigurable resources. Such positive results are related to a better modularization of components achieved by using the proposed high-level approach.

This work aims to assist the design of FPGA-based embedded system by extending the AMoDE-RT approach in order to support automatic generation of VHDL descriptions from high-level specification of embedded systems. This paper discusses the handling of non-functional requirements using concepts from Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) paradigm. The proposed approach promotes the specification of platform-independent aspects in UML/MARTE model, which is later used to generate the system VHDL description. A set of mapping rules has been created to implement the model-level aspects using VHDL constructs/statements. GenERTiCA tool has been extended to allow the UML-to-VHDL automatic transformation, including the weaving of aspects adaptations code into the generated VHDL description. Such an approach allows not only the generation of a fully sinthesizable VHDL description, but also the reuse of aspects in distinct implementation technologies. The obtained results show an increase in system performance and a better utilization of FPGA configurable resources due to the improved components modularization. These results indicate the practicability of full translation of platform-independent aspects into VHDL, opening room for gains in embedded real-time system design, including reuse and design effort reduction.

Fuzzy logic is used in many applications from industrial process control to automotive applications, including consumers trend forecast, aircraft maneuvering control and others. Considering the increased interest in using of multi-rotor aircrafts (usually called drones) for many kinds of applications, it is important to study new methods to improve multi-rotor maneuverability while controlling its stability in a proper way. Controlling the flight of multi-rotors, specially those equipped six rotors, is not a trivial task. When considering the design of such a control systems, traditional approaches such as PD/PID are very difficult to design, in spite of being easily implementable. This work proposes an approach based on multiple interconnected fuzzy controllers, aiming to control the various aspects related to maneuverability of a hexacopter carrying a free payload forming a pendulum. The behavior produced by such a control system has been simulated on a well-known robotics simulation environment and analyzed in terms of flight stability, as well as roll, pitch and yaw movements. The results show the feasibility of the proposed approach in keeping the hexacopter flying in a stable way.

This work aims to assist the design of FPGA-based embedded system by extending the AMoDE-RT approach in order to support automatic generation of VHDL descriptions from high-level specification of embedded systems. For that, this work proposes a new set of mapping rules to translate UML/-MARTE elements into VHDL constructs, allowing the generation of fully synthesizable descriptions, including the embedded system structure and behavior. The proposed mapping rules have been implemented in GenERTiCA tool, which is used in AMoDE-RT to generate source code from UML/MARTE models, enabling the UML-to-VHDL automatic transformation. The proposed approach has been validated using a valve control system as case study. The obtained results show a decrease in FPGA used area, as well as a small impact on system performance. These results indicate the practicability of a full translation from UML elements into VHDL, opening room for specifying the system behavior using higher abstraction levels even for FPGA-based embedded system implementation.

Analysis of human mobility behavior in Smart Cities and Smart Environments: A systematic literature review and taxonomy

The analysis of human mobility behavior through computational techniques finds applications in various domains and provides valuable insights for urban planning, transportation services, and a deeper understanding of human interactions in Smart Cities and Smart Environments. In this scenario, this study presents a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with the following main question: How are computational techniques being used to analyse human mobility behavior in Smart Cities and Smart Environments? A total of 5989 articles were initially found and filtered, resulting in 56 articles reviewed. As the main contributions, this study provides responses to 19 research questions. A list of the challenges and the computational techniques identified is provided. The algorithms, machine learning techniques and data-sources used by the reviewed studies are also presented and organized through taxonomies. A comprehensive discussion of the identified techniques is conducted, finishing with a compilation of challenges, open issues and research opportunities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that reviewed human mobility behavior covering a wide range of scenarios, including urban mobility, public transport, points and regions of interest, ridesharing, bike-sharing, traffic analysis, driving behavior, electric vehicle charging stations planning, mobility on demand, crowd analysis and others.

Virtualization allows for more efficient hardware usage by allowing several instances of Operating Systems (OSs) or Virtual Machines (VMs) to run on a physical server. Containers are a subset of lightweight virtualization and reduce the overhead of virtualizing an entire OS by sharing the server's OS with the virtualized instances. Moreover, containers work closer to hardware than VMs and are similar to Linux processes, however, this limits connectivity freedom since processes do not have access to network addressing. To resemble container's communication to that of conventional networks we use network drivers. Studies show that in processing- or memory-bound scenarios, containers perform better than VMs, but in network-bound scenarios they achieve less performance. This work analyzes performance of networking implementations for Docker in different container allocations and workload scenarios.
