The SOA architecture primarily based on Web services is experiencing a steady adoption, although its growth was lower than expected when it was launched, mainly because of security related concerns. Web services inherited many well-known security problems of Web applications and brought new ones. Major data breaches today are consequences of bad input validation at the application level. This paper presents a way to implement an input validation model for Web services which can be used to prevent cross-site scripting and SQL injection through the use of predefined models which specify valid inputs. The proposed WSIVM (Web Services Input Validation Model) consists of an XML schema, an XML specification, and a module for performing input validation according to the schema. A case study showing the effectiveness and performance of this mechanism is also presented.

This paper presents a methodology for roughness analysis based on surface characteristics of images obtained from optical and electronic microscopes. Texture analysis has been widely used in different fields, such as medical image analysis, visual interpretation of remote sensing images, image search and industrial quality inspection of manufactured products, which is the focus of this paper. We present a novel method of analysis based on texture characteristics. The Haralick descriptors are used to describe the surface texture and to classify its roughness. The primary roughness standards are evaluated and classified according to several features considering these descriptors. The set of values is the input of a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network. The obtained results show that it can be possible to advance this methodology in order to develop a roughness digital measurement system for the evaluation of surface ending process. © 2012 Institute of Telecommunica.

The use of numerical prediction models are essential to modern society. Data assimilation is a technique that aims to increase the prediction accuracy by combining a model output with observational data, resulting in a state that is closer to the true state of the problem. Depending on the size of the model output and the number of observations to assimilate, the combination of these two sources of information may require intensive computing and become a challenge, even for supercomputers used in this type of application. Thus neural networks have been proposed as an alternative to perform high quality data assimilation at lower computational cost. This paper investigates the use of NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) in data assimilation. NEAT is capable of adapting the connections weights and the neural network topology using principles of evolutionary computation in a search for a minimum topology and best performance. In this work, two different models were used for testing: the Lorenz Attractor and Shallow Water model. The experiments compared the results obtained with NEAT and backpropagation neural networks, using as benchmark the Best Linear Unbiased Estimator (BLUE). In the experiment with the Lorenz Attractor, NEAT was able to emulate the data assimilation task with smaller error at lower computational cost. For the Shallow Water model, tested using different grid sizes, it was observed that the errors obtained with both neural networks were small, but NEAT showed high error values. On the other hand, NEAT always gets a topology with significantly fewer operations, and the computational cost difference increases with the grid size.

Software complexity has increased considerably over recent years, needing special target architectures as MPSoCs to fulfill the heavy memory, communication and computation requirements. Nevertheless, the use of MPSoCs has brought attention to the need for effective methods and tools for parallel software development. Methodologies aggregating partitioning and mapping are normally employed to fulfill the heavy requirements of such systems. This paper explores task-partitioning and processor-mapping methods on homogeneous NoC-Based MPSoC. The effect of both on application's energy consumption is explored alone and jointly. Experiments with several synthetic and four real applications show that the energy consumption is reduced up to 18%, 31.8% or 38.1% when applying partitioning, mapping or both, respectively. © 2011 ACM.

The combination of testing techniques is considered an effective strategy to evaluate a software product. However, the selection of which techniques to combine in a software project has been an interesting challenge in the Software Engineering field. This paper presents a proposal extending an approach developed to support the combined selection of model-based testing (MBT) techniques, named Porantim, applying Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimization strategy by determining the smallest dominating set in a bipartite and weighted graph. Thus, a local search strategy algorithm is proposed generating solutions aiming at maximizing the coverage of software project characteristics and skills required by the testing team to use the techniques and minimizing the eventual effort to construct models used for test cases generation. A preliminary evaluation analyzes this new approach when compared to the Porantim's original version, and the results indicate improvements in the MBT techniques selection. © 2011 IEEE.

The need for procedures and methodologies used in clinical information standardization is continuous, requiring the current telemedicine networks to evolve and adapt by using mature standards and guidelines as the basis for clinical documents transmitted through the network. In this work, we present a different approach for large-scale use of DICOM SR in telemedicine networks using structured vocabularies as its foundation, resulting in a reliable, efficient and data mining ready application applied in a real world telemedicine network. This approach is applied in a large-scale network where 60 physicians report daily an average of 400 reports; resulting in more than 80,000 reports written and stored in the last nine months. We conclude that the use of this approach can reduce eventual syntax or conceptual mistakes by using proper structured vocabularies in addition to DICOM SR.

In this work, we present a schema to classify the signal sensed as well as to classify the spectrum band occupation according to signals sensed. We also present a list of functionalities that ensure information and operations need to upper layers perform interference avoidance, power allocation, sensing control, spectrum characterization, spectrum selection and reconfiguration. With this list, we highlight the radio configuration features that are relevant to achieve cognitive network goals. Finally, we evaluate the expressivity of proposed schema to hit the main cognitive network goals and we conclude that our propose is relevant to cognitive radio research once it define de minimum behavior and responsibilities to cognitive radio layer. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper we explore the integration among Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Agent Based Simulation Tools. An Agent-Based Geographical Information System (ABGIS) could be characterized as a kind of system integrating features commonly found in Geographical Information System with the features of Agent-Based Simulation Tools. ABGIS would give to scientists and researches, not necessarily computer experts, access to powerful simulation tools and an environment that is an excellent metaphor to represent our spatio-temporal world. With ABGIS we could explore the dynamics of spatiotemporal systems, and particularly but not exclusively, complex systems.
