This paper presents an approach for Web service (WS) composition that enables the automatic adjustment of the composition at run-time to deal with WS execution flaws, e.g., WS unavailability, failure to execute properly or to produce desired results. The WS composition problem is converted into a nondeterministic planning problem which, by its turn, is mapped to SAT. Afterwards, a SAT solver obtains all the possible WS compositions with a maximum length N, which are then fused into a contingency strategy (CS) according to compatibility criteria. Such strategy enables the process execution engine to readily choose the most suitable WS composition to enact, and switch to an alternative composition with minimum adaptation cost in case of any WS execution flaw.

This article introduces a multi-level visualization scheme for poetry. In each level, different elements are represented and their attributes are coded in different ways. The first level displays the phonemes in a verse, tracing them back to the written word. The second level shows the poem itself in a metric grid where the verse syllables are placed. The third level shows a set of poems whose verses and syllables can be visually compared. Finally, the fourth level is capable of showing hundreds or thousands of verses at once, turning each verse into a tile whose color indicates a meaningful property. We argue that each level has its strengths and its weaknesses and we evaluate them with our collaborators from the poetry community.

The verification of embedded software has become an important subject over the last years. However, neither standalone verification approaches, like simulation-based or formal verification, nor state-of-the-art hybrid/semiformal verification approaches are able to verify large and complex embedded software with hardware dependencies. This work presents an optimized scalable hybrid verification approach for the verification of embedded software with hardware dependencies using a mixed bottom-up/top-down algorithm with optimized static parameter assignment (SPA). These algorithms and methodologies like SPA and counterexample guided simulation are used to combine simulation-based and formal verification in a new way. SPA offers a way to interact between dynamic and static verification approaches based on an automated ranking heuristic of possible function parameters according to the impact on the model size. Furthermore, SPA inserts initialization code for specific function parameters into the source code under test and supports model building and optimization algorithms to reduce the state space. We have successfully applied this optimized hybrid verification methodology to an embedded software application: Motorola's Powerstone Benchmark suite. The results show that our approach scales better than stand-alone software model checkers to reach deep state spaces.

The use of numerical prediction models are essential to modern society. Data assimilation is a technique that aims to increase the prediction accuracy by combining a model output with observational data, resulting in a state that is closer to the true state of the problem. Depending on the size of the model output and the number of observations to assimilate, the combination of these two sources of information may require intensive computing and become a challenge, even for supercomputers used in this type of application. Thus neural networks have been proposed as an alternative to perform high quality data assimilation at lower computational cost. This paper investigates the use of NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (NEAT) in data assimilation. NEAT is capable of adapting the connections weights and the neural network topology using principles of evolutionary computation in a search for a minimum topology and best performance. In this work, two different models were used for testing: the Lorenz Attractor and Shallow Water model. The experiments compared the results obtained with NEAT and backpropagation neural networks, using as benchmark the Best Linear Unbiased Estimator (BLUE). In the experiment with the Lorenz Attractor, NEAT was able to emulate the data assimilation task with smaller error at lower computational cost. For the Shallow Water model, tested using different grid sizes, it was observed that the errors obtained with both neural networks were small, but NEAT showed high error values. On the other hand, NEAT always gets a topology with significantly fewer operations, and the computational cost difference increases with the grid size.

The currently adopted specifications for Digital Television (DTV) middleware do not define the internal characteristics of their architecture. As a result, the existing middleware implementations are not as flexible, extensible and adaptable as they should be due to the adoption of a closely-coupled architecture. This paper proposes a modular architecture for DTV middleware, which allows easy extension and updating, providing a simple way to add new features to the middleware. This architecture is based on the OSGi framework and its software components, called bundles. A categorization of these bundles was proposed, based on different usage scenarios that were identified, according to industry time-to-market and innovation needs. Prototypes of the architecture and of bundles have been implemented, and tests performed with these prototypes show the feasibility of this approach. © 2011 ACM.

The need for procedures and methodologies used in clinical information standardization is continuous, requiring the current telemedicine networks to evolve and adapt by using mature standards and guidelines as the basis for clinical documents transmitted through the network. In this work, we present a different approach for large-scale use of DICOM SR in telemedicine networks using structured vocabularies as its foundation, resulting in a reliable, efficient and data mining ready application applied in a real world telemedicine network. This approach is applied in a large-scale network where 60 physicians report daily an average of 400 reports; resulting in more than 80,000 reports written and stored in the last nine months. We conclude that the use of this approach can reduce eventual syntax or conceptual mistakes by using proper structured vocabularies in addition to DICOM SR.

Many components are usually created within a Domain Engineering (DE) process. These components may exchange a great number of messages among them, and many times this interaction occurs within a specific group of components. The more messages the components exchange, the more complex the domain architecture becomes, thus compromising its understandability, maintainability and ultimately its reusability. This paper presents some elements of a components grouping technique that aims to identify and propose solutions to components coupling problems. This technique is being proposed within a domain engineering process called CBD-Arch-DE focused on component-based architectural design. © 2005 IEEE.

The objective of this study is to propose a project management model which includes the unified process (UP) and UML language, for e-business software development in a physically distributed environment. The research is a qualitative study, aiming to develop methods and models. The main research method is the case study, according to Yin (1992). Initial results point towards a model, which includes the spiral life cycle type, the development process of object-oriented systems (using UML specification language and the unified process as proposed by RUP), and the incorporation of the procedural approach proposed by PMBOK (2000). The proposed model is divided into 6 phases, where each one of these phases contains a set of associated activities. In the future, the intention is to develop a support software for the model and apply this software into the environment in study. This extremely important study line demonstrates that the business world and business practices in the software development area are moving ahead of existent theories and conceptual models in this area. This study, yet in its initial phases, starts to bring significant results that contribute to meet market expectations nowadays. © 2003 IEEE.
