The carbon brushes and slip rings of a hydrogen-erator are the main components guiding the excitation current from the bridge to the rotor windings. The brushes' temperature are crucial to infer their operational condition and, the generator status. This work presents the temperature measurement of six Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) sensors installed in a 370 MVA electric generator brushes. The results show the sensors' capacity to monitor the brushes' temperature in accordance with the current flowing through them. Together with the sensors, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) technique was applied to the measured temperature to detect anomalous events regarding the current supplied to the rotor windings. The optical sensors combined with the AI could detect five events of abnormal current behaviour. One is presented in detail in this paper. This sensing system can be further applied to online fault detection using the temperature measured by the FBGs as a brush condition indicator and a generator operation and maintenance tool.

Fiber optic-based sensors have experimented with significant technological advances in the last two decades. Distributed acoustic sensors represent their most recent iteration. This sensing technology become all the cable length into a sensor, a favorable condition for seismic studies. Data preprocessing is a crucial step in this study, in which the seismic signals captured by optical interrogators must be converted to the apparent velocity of particles that sensitized the fiber. Amongst the main conversion algorithms, the ones based on Fourier Transforms are more adopted at large-scale surveys. This paper presents an algorithm implementation for this conversion, based on the 2D Fourier Transform, in a small-scale laboratory investigation. The results are favorable and show that it is a possible use. It brings more definition to individualizing first break time arrivals, equalizing signal amplitude, and aligning oscillation peaks, essential parameters for applying reflections and refraction methods in seismic studies.

In recent years, distributed acoustic sensing has garnered significant interest in seismic monitoring due to its sensitivity to low frequencies, continuity of measurement in both time and space and the capacity to provide vast amounts of data regarding the conditions of large structures. This study aims to develop a metrological characterization system to evaluate the performance of the distributed acoustic sensing systems to reconstruct the mechanical wavefront and measure its propagation speed in polyurethane foams. The wave propagation speed measured using distributed acoustic sensing is compared with optical fiber Bragg grating sensors and piezoelectric accelerometer, and the difference is less than 1.5%. The results demonstrate that it is possible to reconstruct the mechanical wavefront using both instrumented sensors, thus validating the application of a distributed acoustic sensing system for mechanical wave measurement in polyurethane foams.

Three-phase induction motors are the main elements for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy and are extensively used in industry. Reducing maintenance costs becomes an incentive for developing systems capable of identifying defects. This research proposes a framework for recommending machine learning algorithms that diagnose and detect broken bar defects in three-phase induction motors under transient operation based on artificial intelligence. Employing experimental data, features were extracted and selected based on current, voltage, and vibration. A protocol of insertion of white noise showed that the proposed framework admitted 80% of noise without losing the predictive capacity based on a multicriteria performance measure.

This paper presents a single-phase DC-DC Boost converter where the switched-capacitor technique was applied. The proposed converter has a middle point in DC-link. This characteristic allows input and output terminals to be at the same reference. DC-link presents twice the ordinary boost converter voltage. The proposed solution is suitable to Photovoltaic Grid Connected Inverters applications, operating with a NPC inverter. The converter was designed aiming a solution to the high dv/dt problems. These problems are inherent between the traditional converter and inverter structures of PV systems. A 100W operational lab model was built and tested. The experimental results are in accordance with the theoretical results. An efficiency of 96% was achieved. © 2018 IEEE.

A simplified SPICE model for an IGBT rated for 1200A and 1700V is proposed. The modeling was introduced as one of the development steps of a chopper DC-DC converter used for traction motors of diesel-electric locomotives, applied so improvements on torque, consequently in adhesion and velocity control is achieved, thus being a component involved with some of the main concerns of railroad transportation. The need of a simplified technique is due the fact that a practical and quick approach was wanted and none standard model was found for the intended IGBT part number. Another motivational factor is that some traditional methods were evaluated and it was noticed that some knowledge of the IGBT construction would be necessary in order to use the regular SPICE model or to develop an analytical solution. The modeling achieved uses no more than the information found on the component datasheet described in tables format. The validation was done in two different topologies with several current levels and different switching frequencies. A basic thermal modeling, yet with good results, is also performed. A simplistic form of modeling is achieved making it a quick and easy tool, suitable for end applications developers. The final application is meant to regulate output currents up to 1000A with input DC links up to 900V and the proposed approach was tested to be suitable to simulations with such levels of current and voltages. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper presents a voltage doubler AC-DC converter to be applied in UPS. It is capable of operation with AC and DC Input source. The proposed rectifler provides high power factor and improves power efficiency for line voltage applications. The conduction losses are reduced by essentially eliminating the full-bridge diode rectifier. A bidirectional switch is used for the power switches, simplifying the overall power circuit structure. The two output capacitor voltage imbalance is inherent in the half-bridge rectifier, and therefore the balance control technique will be added in the future to complete this research. The operational principles, design considerations, and realizations are discussed and verified. The rectifier is suitable especially for a half-bridged inverter that requires a dual power supply. The practicability of the proposed voltage-doubling rectifier is confirmed by simulation and experiment The specification of the proposed half-bridge doubler boost is rated at 230 W and operates at 20 kHz, with an input AC voltage of 127 VRMS or an input DC voltage of 144 VDC and a regulated output voltage of 480 VDC, for experiments to verify the theoretic analysis as a solution to the problem of a inexistent doubler boost converter with a common point between line source, DC source and load. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper presents an AC-AC Buck converter in which a modulation technique was applied in order to reduce losses due to dissipative snubbers. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation were performed. A 100W prototype was built and tested. Efficiency curves show that snubber losses are minimized with the use of a simple open-loop control technique.

Although widely employed in medical diagnostic applications, most of the available commercial ultrasound (US) scanners do not always fit the needs of research users. Access to raw US data, portability, flexibility and advanced user control are essential features to explore alternative biomedical signal and imaging processing algorithms. In this paper, we present the initial results of a reconfigurable, cost-effective and modular 128-channel FPGA and PC-based US system, specifically designed for teaching and medical imaging research. The proposed system exploits the advantages of the MD2131 (Microchip Technology Inc.) beamformer source driver to generate arbitrary waveforms and the analog front-end AFE5805 (Texas Instruments Inc.) to obtain the maximum flexibility and wide data access to the various US data streams. Two applications involving plane wave excitation and delay-and-sum (DAS) beamforming are discussed. The results show that the open platform can help biomedical students and researchers to develop and evaluate different imaging strategies for medical US imaging and nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques, among other applications.
