Although context-awareness is a central paradigm for the implementation of ubiquitous systems, it still lacks adequate representation models, methods and tools that support the development of such systems. Particularly, in order to secure interoperability and allow device interaction, software applications are required to provide unambiguous data and device representation models. In this paper we argue in favor of the use of formal ontology as the tool to formalize the notion of context, describe the interplay between systems and environments and, ultimately, enable verification. Ontologies allow machines to process and integrate devices intelligently, enable quick and accurate search, facilitate communication between a multitude of heterogeneous devices and enable reasoning [22]. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2008.

Cloud computing aims to power the next generation data centers and enables application service providers to lease data center capabilities for deploying applications depending on user QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. Cloud applications have different composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Quantifying the performance of resource allocation policies and application scheduling algorithms at finer details in Cloud computing environments for different application and service models under varying load, energy performance (power consumption, heat dissipation), and system size is a challenging problem to tackle. To simplify this process, in this paper we propose CloudSim: an extensible simulation toolkit that enables modelling and simulation of Cloud computing environments. The CloudSim toolkit supports modelling and creation of one or more virtual machines (VMs) on a simulated node of a Data Center, jobs, and their mapping to suitable VMs. It also allows simulation of multiple Data Centers to enable a study on federation and associated policies for migration of VMs for reliability and automatic scaling of applications.

Distributed system emulators provide a paramount platform for testing of network protocols and distributed applications in clusters and networks of workstations. However, to allow testers to benefit from these systems, it is necessary an efficient and automatic mapping of hundreds, or even thousands, of virtual nodes to physical hosts-and the mapping of the virtual links between guests to physical paths in the physical environment. In this paper we present a heuristic to map both virtual machines to hosts and virtual links between virtual machines to paths in the real system. We define the problem we are addressing, present the solution for it and evaluate it in different usage scenarios.

It is often claimed that inaccurate modularisation of crosscutting concerns hinders program comprehension and, as a consequence, leads to harmful software instabilities. However, recent studies have pointed out that crosscutting concerns are not always harmful to design stability. Hence, software maintainers would benefit from well documented patterns of crosscutting concerns and a better understanding about their actual impact on design stability. This paper presents a catalogue of crosscutting concern patterns recurrently observed in software systems. These patterns are described and classified based on an intuitive vocabulary that facilitates their recognition by software engineers. We analysed instances of the crosscutting patterns in object-oriented and aspect-oriented versions of three evolving programs. The outcomes of our exploratory evaluation indicated that: (i) a certain category of crosscutting patterns seems to be good indicator of harmful instabilities, and (ii) aspect-oriented solutions were unable to modularise concerns matching some crosscutting patterns.

This paper presents a Cohesive Zone Model (CZM) approach for investigating dynamic crack propagation in homogeneous and Functionally Graded Materials (FGMs). The failure criterion is incorporated in the CZM using both a finite cohesive strength and work to fracture in the material description. A novel CZM for FGMs is explored and incorporated into a finite element framework. The material gradation is approximated at the element level using a graded element formulation. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the efficacy of the CZM approach, in which the influence of the material gradation on the crack growth pattern is studied.

With the emergence of aspect-oriented (AO) techniques, crosscutting concerns can be now explicitly modularized and exposed as additional variabilities in program families Hence, the development of highly customizable software family architectures requires the explicit handling of crosscutting variabilities through domain engineering and application engineering steps In this context, this paper presents a generative model that addresses the implementation and instantiation of variabilities encountered in AO software family architectures The use of our model allows for an early specification and preparation of AO variabilities, which in turn can be explicitly customized by means of domain engineering activities All the variabilities of the architecture are modeled using feature models In application engineering, developers can request an instance of the AO architecture in a process of two stages: (i) the definition of a feature model instance which specifies the resolution of variabilities for the AO family architecture;and (ii) the definition of a set of crosscutting relationships between features.

One of the main promises of aspect-oriented programming (AOP) is to promote improved modularization of crosscutting concerns, thereby enhancing the software stability in the presence of changes. This paper presents a quantitative study that assesses the positive and negative effects of AOP on typical maintenance activities of a Web information system. The study consists of a systematic comparison between the object-oriented and the aspect-oriented versions of the same application in order to assess to what extent each solution provides maintainable software decompositions. Our analysis was driven by fundamental modularity attributes, such as coupling, cohesion, conciseness, and separation of concerns. We have found that the aspect-oriented design has exhibited superior stability and reusability through the changes, as it has resulted in fewer lines of code, improved separation of concerns, weaker coupling, and lower intra-component complexity

Design patterns offer flexible solutions to common problems in software development. Recent studies have shown that several design patterns involve crosscutting concerns. Unfortunately, object-oriented (OO) abstractions are often not able to modularize those crosscutting concerns, which in turn decrease the system reusability and maintainability. Hence, it is important verifying whether aspect-oriented approaches support improved modularization of crosscutting concerns relative to design patterns. Ideally, quantitative studies should be performed to compare OO and aspect-oriented implementations of classical patterns with respect to important software engineering attributes, such as coupling and cohesion. This paper presents a quantitative study that compares aspect-based and OO solutions for the 23 Gang-of-Four patterns. We have used stringent software engineering attributes as the assessment criteria. We have found that most aspect-oriented solutions improve separation of patternrelated concerns, although only 4 aspect-oriented implementations have exhibited significant reuse. © 2005 ACM.
