In this paper, we present a virtual control contraction metric (VCCM) based nonlinear parameter-varying (NPV) approach to design a state-feedback controller for a control moment gyroscope (CMG) to track a user-defined trajectory set. This VCCM based nonlinear stabilization and performance synthesis approach, which is similar to linear parameter-varying (LPV) control approaches, allows to achieve exact guarantees of exponential stability and L2-gain performance on nonlinear systems with respect to all trajectories from the predetermined set, which is not the case with the conventional LPV methods. Simulation and experimental studies conducted in both fully- and under-actuated operating modes of the CMG show effectiveness of this approach compared to standard LPV control methods. © 2021, CC BY.

This paper presents a comprehensive study on the reconfiguration of power distribution networks (PDN) within interconnected microgrids (MGs), utilizing the Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (AHA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), and the Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA) for optimization. The objective is to minimize power loss and improve voltage profiles across the interconnected systems while maintaining a radial topology within each microgrid and the overall interconnection. Building on previous work, which focused solely on horizontal interconnection in two 20-bus systems, this study expands the scope by incorporating vertical and diagonal interconnection scenarios for the 20-bus systems. Additionally, it explores these configurations within a 69-bus system model. Simulation results demonstrate that while all three algorithms improve power loss reduction and voltage stability, AHA consistently outperforms PSO and SMA. The findings contribute to a robust framework for PDN reconfiguration, addressing the complexities of various interconnection configurations and providing valuable insights into enhancing the performance and sustainability of interconnected MGs.

The Petz recovery channel plays an important role in quantum information science as an operation that approximately reverses the effect of a quantum channel. The pretty good measurement is a special case of the Petz recovery channel, and it allows for near-optimal state discrimination. A hurdle to the experimental realization of these vaunted theoretical tools is the lack of a systematic and efficient method to implement them. This Letter sets out to rectify this lack: Using the recently developed tools of quantum singular value transformation and oblivious amplitude amplification, we provide a quantum algorithm to implement the Petz recovery channel when given the ability to perform the channel that one wishes to reverse. Moreover, we prove that, in some sense, our quantum algorithm’s usage of the channel implementation cannot be improved by more than a quadratic factor. Our quantum algorithm also provides a procedure to perform pretty good measurements when given multiple copies of the states that one is trying to distinguish.

This contribution deals with distributed finite-sum optimization for learning over networks in the presence of malicious Byzantine attacks. To cope with such attacks, resilient approaches so far combine stochastic gradient descent (SGD) with different robust aggregation rules. However, the sizeable SGD-induced gradient noise makes it challenging to distinguish malicious messages sent by the Byzantine attackers from noisy stochastic gradients sent by the friendly workers. This motivates gradient noise reduction as a means of robustifying SGD in the presence of Byzantine attacks. To this end, the present work puts forth a Byzantine attack resilient distributed (Byrd-) SAGA approach for learning tasks involving finite-sum optimization over networks. Rather than the mean employed by distributed SAGA, the novel Byrd-SAGA relies on the geometric median to aggregate the corrected stochastic gradients sent by the workers. When less than half of the workers are Byzantine attackers, the robustness of geometric median to outliers enables Byrd-SAGA to achieve provable linear convergence to a neighborhood of the optimal solution, where the size of neighborhood is determined by the number of Byzantine workers. Numerical tests demonstrate the robustness of Byrd-SAGA to various Byzantine attacks, as well as the merits of Byrd-SAGA over Byzantine-resilient SGD.

The paper addresses the identification of spatial-temporal mirror surface deformations as a result of laser-based heat load within the lithography process of integrated circuit production. The thermal diffusion and surface deformation are modeled by separation of the spatial-temporal effects using data-driven orthogonal decomposition. A novel tree adjoining grammar (TAG) and sparsity enhanced symbolic-regression-based learning methods are deployed to discover temporal dynamics that connect the spatial variation. The resulting data-driven procedure is applied to automatically synthetise a compact model representation of synthetic thermal effects induced mirror surface deformations.

Plasmonic particle-on-film nanocavities,supporting gap modes with ultra-small volume,provide a great solution to boost light–matter interactions at the *** this work,we report on the photoluminescence(PL)enhancement of monolayer MoS_(2) using high order modes of an Au nanosphere dimer-on-film nanocavity(DoFN).The high order plasmon modes,consisting of two bonding quadrupoles in the dimer and their images in the Au film,are revealed by combining the polarization-resolved scattering spectra with the numerical *** integrating the monolayer MoS_(2) into the DoFN,these high order modes are used to enhance PL intensity through simultaneously boosting the absorption and emission processes,producing a 1350-fold enhancement *** opens an avenue to enhance the light–matter interaction with high order plasmon modes and may find applications in future optoelectronics and nanophotonics devices.

Recently, federated learning (FL) has emerged as a promising distributed machine learning (ML) technology, owing to the advancing computational and sensing capacities of end-user devices, as well as the increasing concerns on users' privacy. As a special architecture in FL, vertical FL (VFL) is capable of constructing a hyper ML model by embracing sub-models from different types of clients. These sub-models are trained locally by vertically partitioned data with distinct attributes. Therefore, the design of VFL is fundamentally different from that of conventional FL, raising new and unique research issues. In this paper, we aim to discuss key challenges in VFL with effective solutions, and conduct experiments on real-life datasets to shed light on these issues. Specifically, we first propose a general framework on VFL, and highlight the key differences between VFL and conventional FL. Then, we discuss research challenges rooted in VFL systems from four aspects, i.e., security and privacy risks, expensive computation and communication costs, possible structural damage caused by model splitting, and system heterogeneity. Afterwards, we develop solutions to addressing the aforementioned challenges, and conduct extensive experiments to showcase the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. In space applications, hierarchical state machines (HSMs) are often used for writing simulation and control software, including that of the Curiosity rover. At the Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL), multiple programming languages have been developed specifically for writing HSM-based software, and these have been used in practice. However, we observe that the existing languages developed have significant issues with one or more of usability, performance, and safety, making them problematic for HSM-based development. To address these concerns, we are taking lessons learned from these languages and developing a new programming language named Proteus. Proteus builds HSM support directly into the language, and permits complex HSMs to be defined which communicate with each other. Proteus is designed with a look and feel similar to C/C++, making it usable and overall approachable for use by JPL systems engineers. Proteus itself compiles to C++, allowing it to fit easily into existing development toolchains, and making it amenable to embedded real-time systems. To ensure that Proteus will be of use to its target audience, it is being developed iteratively through a series of prototypes which are regularly evaluated by key stakeholders at JPL, allowing us to refine its design if we go off course. While Proteus is still very young in its development, we demonstrate its basic viability on an example utilizing multiple independent HSMs communicating with each other, and relevant execution traces. In the future, we plan to apply Proteus to larger HSMs taken from real space applications, and many additional relevant features are planned. © 2020 The MITRE Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

Nanostructured surfaces enhance ion yields in matrix assisted laser desorption-ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS). The spike protein complex, S1, is one fingerprint signature of Sars-CoV-2 with a mass of 75 kDa. Here, we show that MALDI-MS yields of Sars-CoV-2 spike protein ions in the 100 kDa range are enhanced 50-fold when the matrix-analyte solution is placed on substrates that are coated with a dense forest of multi-walled carbon nanotubes, compared to yields from uncoated substrates. Nanostructured substrates can support the development of mass spectrometry techniques for sensitive pathogen detection and environmental monitoring. © 2022, CC BY.
