Exposure Therapy (ET) is one of the most widely-used methods for treating Specific Phobias, and, over the past few years, Virtual Reality (VR) has contributed significantly in this field, since the birth of what we call "Virtual Reality ET" (VRET). However, VR systems used in VRET so far do not fully integrate ET characteristics;the reason behind this is that they do not provide sufficient, or occasionally not any at all, interaction with the feared stimulus, which is a key factor for full ET implementation. Objective: The aim of our study is to propose a way to include natural interaction between the patient and the system during the treatment procedure. Method: We propose an addition to current session protocols for mental health professionals through which they can apply ET in full extent with the use of motion tracking sensors. Specifically, we added a Motion Recognition Camera, which tracks the patient’s movements and places their physical body within the virtual environment, increasing their feeling of presence and making the system more immersive. Therefore, clinicians can assign interactive tasks for their patients to practice within a controlled virtual environment. Results: We present the feedback we received regarding the system’s potential utility and efficiency by a group of psychiatry professionals who tried the system. As the main contribution, this document provides a consistent discretization of a class of fixed-time stable systems, namely predefined-time stable systems. In the unperturbed case, the proposed approach allows obtaining not only a consistent but exact discretization of the considered class of predefined-time stable systems, whereas in the perturbed case, the consistent discretization preserves the predefined-time stability property. All the results are validated through simulations and compared with the conventional explicit Euler scheme, highlighting the advantages of this proposal.

Nanohybrid comprising of a nanoresonator and a quantum emitter have shown enhanced optical properties compared to its constituents. Such nanohybrids are highly sensitive to their surrounding medium permittivity, making them suitable for sensing applications which relies on the background permittivity. This feature is a result of the change in resonance conditions in the nanoresonator, which is part of the nanohybrid. Here we investigate how different nanoresonators affect the sensing capabilities of the nanohybrid and use that information to make recommendations on the best nanores-onator for the nanohybrid depending on the application. Our analysis is based on cavity quantum electrodynamics formalism and thus rigorous and accurate. Our results indicate that the graphene resonator based nanohybrids can be used to detect broader permittivity range than MNP based nanohybrids.

In this paper, we propose a highly practical fully online multi-object tracking and segmentation (MOTS) method that uses instance segmentation results as an input. The proposed method is based on the Gaussian mixture probability hypothesis density (GMPHD) filter, a hierarchical data association (HDA), and a mask-based affinity fusion (MAF) model to achieve high-performance online tracking. The HDA consists of two associations: segment-to-track and track-to-track associations. One affinity, for position and motion, is computed by using the GMPHD filter, and the other affinity, for appearance is computed by using the responses from a single object tracker such as a kernalized correlation filter. These two affinities are simply fused by using a score-level fusion method such as min-max normalization referred to as MAF. In addition, to reduce the number of false positive segments, we adopt mask IoU-based merging (mask merging). The proposed MOTS framework with the key modules: HDA, MAF, and mask merging, is easily extensible to simultaneously track multiple types of objects with CPU-only execution in parallel processing. In addition, the developed framework only requires simple parameter tuning unlike many existing MOTS methods that need intensive hyperparameter optimization. In the experiments on the two popular MOTS datasets, the key modules show some improvements. For instance, ID-switch decreases by more than half compared to a baseline method in the training sets. Set stability for switched Boolean networks with open-loop and closed-loop switching signals

This paper mainly analyzes the set stability of switched Boolean networks(SBNs) by considering two different methods of switching signals in the form of open-loop and closed-loop switching. First, the definitions of set stability are proposed for SBNs with such switching signals. Then, we propose two different algorithms to find the largest open-loop switching invariant set and largest closed-loop switching invariant set. Furthermore, the corresponding set stability conditions for SBNs are given in each case. In addition,the constructive procedures are presented to design the switching signal sequence to achieve set stability under the two different methods of switching signals. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms and research results are demonstrated using two numerical examples.

Electromagnetic radiation can be classified into two major types depending on its ability to detach electrons from atoms: ionising and non-ionising. The aforementioned categorization is significant due to the effects of ionising radiation on human tissue (e.g. carcinogenesis). However, many students around the globe cannot distinguish these two types of electromagnetic radiation and as a result significant misconceptions arise regarding this topic (for example radiation emitted by mobile phones is considered by many students as ionising). Hence, in this paper a teaching approach specifically designed and implemented for the secondary education level is presented, based on the absorbed energy distribution by atoms/molecules in each radiation type. More specifically, the number of atoms/molecules that absorb equal doses of energy per unit mass can be used in order to explain the difference in the effects caused by the two abovementioned radiation types. Also, two analogies from classical mechanics are presented to provide a full insight into the energy distribution concept from a teaching perspective. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Enhancing operational performance and productivity benefits in breweries through smart manufacturing technologies

This article uses case studies to demonstrate the potential of smart manufacturing (SM) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to enhance operational performance and productivity in industry. The analysis highlights benefits such as cost reduction, production flexibility, shorter product time-to-market, energy/water efficiency and environmental impact reduction, and increased productivity. To illustrate the effectiveness of SM and IoT approaches, the authors sought out manufacturers currently implementing or seeking to implement SM and IoT technologies. The authors identified beer brewing (NAICS Code 312120) as a rapidly expanding industry whose members appear eager to implement SM technologies to optimize production lines by revealing bottlenecks and identifying performance-reducing nodes. This article presents two case studies based on SM and IoT technologies in breweries. It briefly describes a systematic framework introduced elsewhere by the authors and uses it to assess the energy productivity and competitiveness of SM applications in breweries. This article addresses questions concerning the information and communications technology infrastructure needed to build smart breweries and how corporations simplify the installation and deployment of SM and IoT components. This paper investigates short-packet communications for the dual-hop decode-and-forward relaying system to facilitate ultra-reliable and low-latency communications. In this system, based on the transmit antenna selection and partial relay selection techniques, a selected relay having the highest received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) serves as a forwarder to support the unavailable direct link between the source and destination, whereas a maximum ratio combining technique is leveraged at the destination to achieve the highest diversity gain. Approximated expressions of end-to-end (e2e) block error rates (BLERs) are derived over quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels and the finite-blocklength regime. To gain more insights about the performance behavior in the high-SNR regime, we provide the asymptotic analysis with two approaches, from which the qualitative conclusion based on the diversity order is made. Furthermore, the power allocation and relay location optimization problems are also considered to minimize the asymptotic e2e BLER under the configuration constraints. Our analysis is verified through Monte-Carlo simulations, which yield the system parameters’ impact on the system performance. © 2021, CC BY.

SoloGAN: Multi-domain Multimodal Unpaired Image-to-Image Translation via a Single Generative Adversarial Network

Despite significant advances in image-to-image (I2I) translation with generative adversarial networks (GANs), it remains challenging to effectively translate an image to a set of diverse images in multiple target domains using a single pair of generator and discriminator. Existing I2I translation methods adopt multiple domain-specific content encoders for different domains, where each domain-specific content encoder is trained with images from the same domain only. Nevertheless, we argue that the content (domain-invariance) features should be learned from images among all of the domains. Consequently, each domain-specific content encoder of existing schemes fails to extract the domain-invariant features efficiently. To address this issue, we present a flexible and general SoloGAN model for efficient multimodal I2I translation among multiple domains with unpaired data. In contrast to existing methods, the SoloGAN algorithm uses a single projection discriminator with an additional auxiliary classifier and shares the encoder and generator for all domains. Consequently, the SoloGAN can be trained effectively with images from all domains such that the domain-invariance content representation can be efficiently extracted. Qualitative and quantitative results over a wide range of datasets against several counterparts and variants of the SoloGAN demonstrate the merits of the method, especially for challenging I2I translation datasets, i.e., datasets involving extreme shape variations or need to keep the complex backgrounds unchanged after translations. Furthermore, we demonstrate the contribution of each component in SoloGAN by ablation studies. Impact Statement-Image-to-image (I2I) translation is a popular technology in image synthesis.
