Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) will provide a low-cost, redundant means to perform reconnaissance missions in urban or traditional battlefield environments. These miniaturized vehicles, however, will have extremely limited capacity for onboard navigation sensors, processors, and inter-vehicle communication. This paper explores the application of emerging consensus algorithms to the problem of distributed MAV coordination and control. Through the use of local information exchange (sensing or communication) links, MAV teams are able to initialize and maintain controlled formation geometries, effectively forming a sensor web despite the lack of centralized leadership. Results demonstrate the ability of a twenty-MAV team to accurately assemble in a grid formation when all vehicles are initialized in sufficient proximity to enable a (directed) information exchange topology that spans the MAV network. Without such connectivity, MAV sub-groups form, each of which assembles a smaller version of the original grid formation.

We introduce a second-order consensus protocol and derive necessary and/or sufficient conditions under which consensus can be reached in the context of uni-directional interaction topologies. Many models proposed in the literature to describe Low Voltage power distribution networks in consumer premises as communication media require knowledge of the electrical parameters of the cables comprising these networks. These parameters are nevertheless affected by a large number of factors which may vary greatly from case to case, making it thus very difficult to achieve an exact estimation about them. In this work a finite element approach is used for the simulation of a power distribution cable as communication medium, and the operational series impedance per unit length of a widely used cable type is derived. Moreover, the variation of the cable's operational series impedance versus current frequency, cable distance from earth and earth resistivity is presented.

The inverse magnetostriction effect (IMB) is investigated for noise generation, identification and evaluation in shipboard propulsion machinery applications. The finite element (FE) implementation is performed on an example drive motor in two dimensions. The FE implementation results show an increase in the forces acting on the ferromagnetic region causing more deformation in the stationary core center and in the back iron. This deformation causes increased vibration and hence an audible noise propagation. Wavelet analysis of displacement waveforms at selected points shows the involved frequency range causing noise during the operation. The results confirm the magnetostrictive origin of noise production. The importance of such information realized and utilized for the reduction of noise in machinery problems especially in sensitive applications.

It has been an important task of discovering frequent fragments as particular patterns from large sequence databases generated from a variety of applications. In general, the patterns to be discovered may partially and asynchronously exist in sequences, and even contain gaps. In addition, it is necessary to collect the information regarding the locations and frequencies of the patterns. How to enumerate candidate patterns for evaluation without exponentially increasing the computation is another problem. In this paper, the modified periodicity transform is proposed to meet the requirements mentioned above. Also, a distributed computing framework is implemented to perform the mining task more efficiently. Both synthetic and biological sequences are utilized to examine the approach. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness the system.
