The formal analysis of parallelism and pipelining is performed on an 8-bit add-compare-select element of a Viterbi decoder. The results are quantified through a study of the delay and energy behaviors of gates and complex circuits due to supply scaling and circuit optimization on a modified test setup accounting for routing cost. The energy-throughput relationships of both pipelining and parallelism are characterized in connection to their corresponding depth and degree, showing clear advantages of pipelining over parallelism.

This paper addresses the fundamental problem of automatically discovering an unknown moving deformable object in a monocular video sequence. No prior model of the object is used; it is only assumed that the object is composed of a set of apparently rigid parts that are not necessarily visible simultaneously, making it possible to circumvent the typical constraint of model initialization. A set of rigid parts describing the object is incrementally extracted in a modeling-tracking loop with reinforced memory. In this framework, low-level segmentation is considered as a necessary but non reliable process that helps initiating hypotheses. Motion-based layer segmentation from feature points and edges is applied only when and where no modeled parts can be tracked. Using the quantity of motion measure, it is further shown how to deal with temporal scale. The interest for this approach in applications such as human tracking is demonstrated for a set of various sequences including a rapidly evolving shape

We show that the dynamics of transmission control protocol (TCP) may often be chaotic via a quasiperiodic route consisting of more than two independent frequencies, by employing a commonly used ns-2 network simulator. To capture the essence of the additive increase and multiplicative decrease mechanism of TCP congestion control, and to qualitatively describe why and when chaos may occur in TCP dynamics, we develop a 1D discrete map. The relevance of these chaotic transport dynamics to real Internet connections is discussed.

In powerline communications the signal transmission characteristics of the power line carrier are very significant. This paper presents part of the research work done on the development of an integrated Energy Consumption Management System based on powerline communications. Field test results, concerning signal transmission characteristics on power lines in pilot installations are reported. The well known EMTP is used for the simulation of the transmission path. Simulation results, obtained for the no-load and for the full load cases and after the implementation of carrier wave traps, are compared to the actual measurements from field tests, showing satisfactory agreement. The influence of line length and of line terminations is also investigated for both underground cables and overhead distribution lines.
