The near/far phenomenon in direct sequence spread spectrum (DS-SS) systems that do not employ any power control strategy degrades their throughput performance. A redeeming feature of this problem though, is that under heavy traffic conditions it can in fact improve the maximum achievable throughput of the network. This paper develops a simple adaptive uplink power control scheme exploiting this insight for spread spectrum packet radio networks that is shown to improve throughput performance. This scheme, referred to as 'on-off power control' (OOPC), utilizes packet collision information to determine the power control operation in a distributed fashion. Additionally, an evaluation of the OOPC performance when "centralized load sensing" is used is also presented. The impact of channel fading is included in the performance analysis by modeling packet transmission to be Nakagami faded.

We consider a wireless ad hoc network where each node employs a single-beam directional antenna and is provisioned with limited energy. We are interested in an online multicast routing algorithm for successive multicast communication requests with the aim of maximizing network lifetime. The beamforming property associated with single-beam directional antenna introduces some unique problems that do not exist for omnidirectional antennas and therefore significantly increases the design space for routing algorithms. The contributions of this paper are twofold. First, we provide some important theoretical understanding on various multicast problems and deduce that even an offline version of this problem is NP-hard. Second, we develop a highly competitive online heuristic algorithm that takes network lifetime consideration directly into iterative calculations and show that an algorithm designed under this methodology provides consistently better performance than the current state-of-the-art algorithm that takes remaining energy into iterative calculations. The theoretical results and heuristic algorithm in this paper offer some important insights on algorithmic design for energy-constrained wireless ad hoc networks with directional antennas. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper presents a feature point tracking algorithm using optical flow under the non-prior training active feature model (NPT-AFM) framework. The proposed algorithm mainly focuses on analysis of deformable objects, and provides real-time, robust tracking. The proposed object tracking procedure can be divided into two steps: (i) optical flow-based tracking of feature points and (ii) NPT-AFM for robust tracking. In order to handle occlusion problems in object tracking, feature points inside an object are estimated instead of its shape boundary of the conventional active contour model (ACM) or active shape model (ASM), and are updated as an element of the training set for the AFM. The proposed NPT-AFM framework enables the tracking of occluded objects in complicated background. Experimental results show that the proposed NPT-AFM-based algorithm can track deformable objects in real-time. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The inverse magnetostriction effect (IME) is investigated for noise generation, identification and evaluation in shipboard propulsion machinery applications. The finite element (FE) implementation is performed on an example drive motor in two dimensions. The FE implementation results show an increase in the forces acting on the ferromagnetic region causing more deformation in the stationary core center and in the back iron. This deformation causes increased vibration and hence an audible noise propagation. Wavelet analysis of displacement waveforms at selected points shows the involved frequency range causing noise during the operation. The results confirm the magnetostrictive origin of noise production. The importance of such information realized and utilized for the reduction of noise in machinery problems especially in sensitive applications

We address multi-user scheduling over the down-link channel in wireless data systems. Specifically, we consider a time-slotted system with a single transmitter serving multiple users. With fixed power transmission, the channel condition of a user determines the reliable rate of communication to that user in a particular time-slot. The user set consists of, (i) throughput guaranteed (QoS) users, and, (ii) best effort (BE) users. For such a system we obtain the optimal policy that serves the QoS users with minimum time-slot utilization, thereby, maximizing the remaining fraction of time-slots allocated to the BE users. We present a simple geometric visualization of the optimal policy. In the special scenario of symmetric Rayleigh fading, we obtain explicit formulas that relate the achievable throughput rate guarantee to the number of QoS users supportable and the fraction of time-slots allocated to the BE users. Finally, we compare the throughput results for the optimal policy with the random-scheduling policy and show that gains on the order of ln(N) can be achieved by exploiting multi-user diversity, where N is the number of QoS users.

This paper describes a scalable approach to the enabling of legacy scientific applications on computing grids using a service-oriented architecture. In the context of this paper grid-enabling means turning an existing application, installed on a grid resource, into a service and generating the application-specific user interfaces to use that application through a Web portal. Scalability is achieved by providing a common abstraction for a category of applications and providing a "generic" application service to wrap those applications as services. The focus of this paper's approach is on grid-enabling "command-oriented" scientific applications. The novel aspect of the approach is that the entire process -from turning an application into a service to the user-interface generation for that application - is done automatically, without requiring coding or grid-system downtime. Portlet technology is used to dynamically generate application-specific interfaces. Further, the approach makes it possible to customize the applications for different user groups by way of simplifying, restricting or composing the functionalities of applications. The approach is useful for building grid portals on which a large number of applications need to be dynamically enabled.

The purpose of this presentation is to show the latest efforts by the authors in the development of integrated drive simulation environment. Furthermore, we present the utilization of these research developments into the classroom and how it can be integrated into lectures. We want to help students acquire the knowledge related to actual operations of integrated power systems, for example, the physical behavior of various electrical components, interactions of the individual components with each other during dynamic operations. We could also show component reactions to changes in system parameters or operation conditions as well as study the effects of design changes. The development of physical component modeling and the integrated coupling of these realistic physical modeling with the over all system have led to the creation of realistic practical system that is capable of simulating dynamic operations. This environment also includes hardware-in-the-loop ability along with distributed simulation in order to achieve research innovations in addition to the associated education benefits.

In this paper we present the design of the rule-based framework for the runtime management of high-performance parallel scientific applications. The framework addresses the formulation of application management behaviors as reaction rules, the injection of rules at runtime, their correct, efficient and scalable parallel enforcement, and the detection and resolution of rule conflicts. Unlike rule-based frameworks in business management and security and resource management domains, the presented framework focuses on high-performance parallel scientific applications, which require consistent and efficient management across processors and components. The framework is part of the Accord programming system (Liu et al., 2004)

Sensor networks (SNETs) for monitoring spatial phenomena has emerged as an area of significant practical interest. We focus on the important problem of detection of distributed events, sources, or abnormalities that are localized, i.e., only a small number of sensors in the vicinity of the phenomena are in the field of observation. This problem complements the standard decentralized detection problem, where noisy information about an event is measured by the entire network. For localized phenomena the main difficulty arises from the coupling of: a) noisy sensor observations that lead to local false positives/negatives; and b) limited energy, which constrains communication among sensor nodes. Together these difficulties call for reaching a decentralized statistical ordering based on limited collaboration. We are then led to the following fundamental problem: determine the most probable event locations while minimizing communication cost. Our objective in this paper is to characterize the fundamental trade offs between global performance (false alarms and miss rate) and communication cost. We develop a framework to minimize the communication cost subject to worst-case misclassification constraints by making use of the false discovery rate (FDR) concept along with an optimal local measure transformation at each sensor node. The preliminary results show that the FDR concept applied in a sensor networks context leads to significant reduction in the communication cost of the system. A very interesting implication of this work is that the detection performance of a wireless sensor network is comparable to that of a wired network of sensors.
