This paper presents the design of a companding non-uniform optimal scalar quantizer for speech coding. The quantizer is designed using two neural networks to perform the nonlinear transformation. These neural networks are used in the front and back ends of a uniform quantizer. Two approaches are presented in this paper namely adaptive critic designs (ACD) and particle swarm optimization (PSO), aiming to maximize the signal to noise ratio (SNR). The comparison of these optimal quantizer designs over bit rate range of 3 to 6 is presented. The perceptual quality of the coding is evaluated by the International Telecommunication Union's Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ) standard.

A Mamdani based fuzzy logic controller is designed and implemented for controlling a STATCOM, which is connected to a 10 bus multimachine power system. Such a controller does not need any prior knowledge of the plant to be controlled and can efficiently provide control signals for the STATCOM during different disturbances in the network The proposed controller is implemented using the M67 DSP board and is interfaced to the multimachine power system simulated on a real-time digital simulator (RTDS). Experimental results are provided, showing that the proposed controller provides more effective damping than the conventional PI controller in a typical large scale disturbance, i.e., a three phase short circuit.

Generation of harmonics and the existence of waveform pollution in power system networks is one of the major problems facing the utilities. This paper proposes a neural network solution methodology for the problem of measuring the actual amount of harmonic current injected into a power network by a nonlinear load. The determination of harmonic currents is complicated by the fact that the supply voltage waveform is distorted by other loads and is rarely a pure sinusoid. A recurrent neural network trained with the backpropagation through time (BPTT) training algorithm is used to find a way of distinguishing between the load harmonics and supply harmonics, without disconnecting the load from the network. The biggest advantage of this method is that only waveforms of voltages and currents have to be measured. This method is applicable for both single and three phase loads. This technology could be fabricated into a commercial instrument that could be installed in substations of large customer loads, or used as a hand-held clip on instrument

The increasing complexity of the modern power grid highlights the need for advanced modeling and control techniques for effective control of excitation, turbine and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS). The crucial factors affecting the modern power systems today is voltage and load flow control. Simulation studies in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment and realtime laboratory experimental studies carried out are described and the results show the successful control of the power system elements and the entire power system with adaptive and optimal neurocontrol schemes. Performances of the neurocontrollers are compared with the conventional PI controllers for damping under different operating conditions for small and large disturbances

Harmonics are one of the important power quality measurable quantities. This paper proposes a neural network solution methodology for the problem of measuring the actual amount of harmonic current injected into a power network by a non-linear load. The determination of harmonic currents is complicated by the fact that the supply voltage waveform is distorted by other loads and is rarely a pure sinusoid. Harmonics may therefore be classified as contributions from the load on the one hand and contributions from the power system or supply harmonics on the other hand. A recurrent neural network architecture based method is used to find a way of distinguishing between the load contributed harmonics and supply harmonics, without disconnecting the load from the network. The main advantage of this method is that only waveforms of voltages and currents have to be measured. This method is applicable for both single and three phase loads. This could be fabricated into a commercial instrument that could be installed in substations of large customer loads, or used as a hand-held clip on instrument

In this presentation, we discuss a symbolic tool, implemented in Mathematica©, that converts a hybrid automaton model of a power system into either a mixed logical dynamic system' (MLD) or a 'dynamic mixed integer program' (DMIP). The tool, converts any logical specification into mixed-integer formulas (IP formulas). For example the transition specification for the automaton is converted into a set of inequalities involving Boolean variables. The IP formulas can be used in decision computations using mixed integer programs or mixed integer dynamic programming. An example will be given involving controller design for a power conditioning system. ©2005 IEEE.

As the costs and challenges of global clock distribution grow with each new microprocessor generation, a globally asynchronous, locally synchronous (GALS) approach becomes an attractive alternative. One proposed GALS approach, called a multiple clock domain (MCD) processor, achieves impressive energy savings for a relatively low performance cost. However, the approach requires separating the processor into four domains, including separating the integer and memory domains which complicates load scheduling, and the implementation of 32 voltage and frequency levels in each domain. In addition, the hardware-based control algorithm, though effective overall, produces a significant performance degradation for some applications. In this paper, we devise modifications to the MCD design that retain many of its benefits while greatly reducing the implementation complexity. We first determine that the synchronization channels that are most responsible for the MCD performance degradation are those involving cache access, and propose merging the integer and memory domains to virtually eliminate this overhead. We further propose significantly reducing the number of voltage levels, separating the reorder buffer into its own domain to permit front-end frequency scaling, separating the L2 cache to permit standard power optimizations to be used, and a new online algorithm that provides consistent results across our benchmark suite. The overall result is a significant reduction in the performance degradation of the original MCD approach and greater energy savings, with a greatly simplified microarchitecture that is much easier to implement

Signal processing algorithms represented by data flow graphs can be efficiently mapped to hardware using a block level pipelining architecture. In this scheme, nodes of data flow are mapped to processing blocks and buffers are inserted in between as pipelining elements. We present, in this paper, a methodology for equalizing execution times of various nodes in the data path. The method is used to minimize the power dissipation and buffer usage by judiciously selecting the execution speed of hardware units. The block level pipelining allows for simple local controllers for each buffer which are generated by the global controller based on data flow specifications. The evaluation of the methodology on a practical example is presented.
