Using an expanded reference frame transformation expressed in the complex-variable form, the possibilities offered by multi-phase converters, using carrier-based, sine-triangle pulse-width modulation to generate voltages of different frequencies to actuate multi-phase electric machines are set forth. The generalized expressions for the modulation signals, including the neutral voltage component to be compared with the high frequency triangle waveform to synthesize reference voltages for both five and six-phase converter-electric machines are determined. How the inclusion of the neutral voltage affects the modulation signals and the voltage gain and waveform quality is discussed. Some experimental results of synthesized five phase converter voltage waveforms are provided to validate the voltage waveform synthesis using carrier-based generalized (dis)continuous pulse-width modulation for operation in both the under and over- modulation regimes.

A new current controller structure for the three-phase boost rectifier, using actual phase currents achieving both controllable input power factor and constant DC voltage under asymmetrical source voltages and/or unequal line impedances, is presented in this paper. All the control variables in the new scheme are AC signals instead of the DC signals used in the industry standard synchronous reference frame controllers, eliminating the synchronous reference transformations of the currents, voltages and the hardware (phase lock loop) or software required for voltage phase angle measurement. Under asymmetrical source voltages, a generalized discontinuous PWM method is also developed which can also reduce the device switching loss of the rectifier. An attraction of this controller strategy lies in the ability to transparently achieve leading, lagging and unity power factor operation with regulated DC voltage. With a digital signal processor (DSP), the proposed control algorithm has been experimentally implemented; the experimental results demonstrate their significant effectiveness.

A transparent full-order flux observer design methodology and a model reference adaptive mechanism to estimate the rotor speed of an induction motor are set forth which also ensures system stability in all operability regions. The observer gains are chosen using the Butterworth polynomial and the controller gains of the reference model adaptive speed controller are selected using the concept of the D-decomposition. The overall transfer function between the reference rotor and actual speeds is used to finally determine the controller parameters of the speed loop to enhance the system overall stability in the motoring, regenerative and braking modes of drive operations. The proposed controller and estimator design schemes are validated by computer simulation results for operations in the motoring and regenerating modes

High power three-phase current type pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifiers are becoming increasingly popular as the front-end converter in power electronic systems due to unity displacement power factor control, reduced line current harmonics and tighter electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulation. A new control structure utilizing the concept of input-output linearization technique, pole and zero placements using the Butterworth polynomial is designed for current source rectifiers for unity power factor operation and dc voltage regulation. Utilization of the complex-variable form model voltage equations expressed in the synchronous reference frame simplifies the presentation and design of the controllers. Experimental and computer simulation results of a controlled rectifier confirm the validity of the proposed control technique.

This paper presents a control methodology for the dc voltage regulation of an induction generator-ac-dc- boost rectifier system in which the copper loss of the generator is minimized. With the aid of an input-output linearization technique, which linearizes and decouples the model equations in the synchronous reference frame, a rotor flux vector control type high performance is achieved. Steady-state analysis provides some insights into the operability regime of the generator. The effectiveness of the control scheme under different load conditions as well as varying rotor speeds has been demonstrated by computer simulations. Some experimental results are included.

This paper presents an alternative dynamic channel assignment technique for use in Satellite-Aided Cellular systems. It is based on a three-layer cellular architecture. The use of the proposed technique optimizes the QoS of Ultra High-Speed (UHSMT) and High-Speed Moving Terminals (HSMT). The lower layer of the proposed architecture absorbs the traffic loads of Low Speed Moving Terminals (LSMT). The second layer absorbs the traffic load of the HSMT and the higher layer based on a satellite cell absorbs the traffic load of UHSMT. The results of simulating the proposed technique show that assigning the optimum number of channels in every layer, the QoS of UHSMT and HSMT are optimized especially in High Traffic Conditions, having a small negative effect on the QoS of LSMT.

This paper investigates the use of a dual stator winding squirrel-cage induction machine for generating dc power using series or parallel connected ac-dc PWM rectifiers. The operating principles and constraints when generating under minimum total copper loss condition are explored using the machine steady-state model considering magnetizing flux saturation effects. Regulation of the dc voltage using concepts of the nonlinear input-output linearization method including the design of the controllers are set forth and confirmed to be effective by computer simulation results. Some experimental waveforms of the generator under load are also included in the paper.

Backpropagation algorithm is the most commonly used algorithm for training artificial neural networks. While being a straightforward procedure, it suffers from extensive computations, relatively slow convergence speed and possible divergence for certain conditions. The efficiency of this method as the training algorithm of a radial basis function neural network (RBFN) is compared with that of particle swarm optimization, for neural network based identification of a small power system with a static compensator. The comparison of the two methods is based on the convergence speed and robustness of each method.

High torque pulsation is the major disadvantage of most IPM motor configurations. Choosing proper number of stator slots and winding distribution as well as increasing number of phases are among the possible solutions for reducing torque pulsation. In this paper, five-phase interior permanent magnet motor with fractional-slot stator is studied. It is shown that despite other IPM motors; the proposed five-phase IPM motor with fractional slot has a very low torque pulsation. For comparison purposes, a five-phase IPM motor with 20 stator slots which is a common configuration for four pole five-phase motors is also considered. It is shown that the torque pulsation of the proposed fractional-slot five-phase IPM motor is much lower than the five-phase IPM motor with 20 stator slots. Nonlinear finite element method is used to analyze different machine configuration. A prototype four pole, five-phase IPM motor with 15 stator slots has been built and is used for experimental verification.
