This paper outlines the advantages of photonically-switched power electronics from the standpoint of robustness to electromagnetic interference (EMI) effects, design-ease, and system reliability. Subsequently, the principles of operation of two novel superjunction-based heterostructure optically-triggered devices are described. Satisfactory performance results of the two devices address three critical issues: wavelength of operation, electrical gain, and switching speed.

We study power control in multicell CDMA wireless networks as a team optimization problem where each mobile attains its individual fixed target SIR level by transmitting with minimum possible power level. We derive conditions under which the power control problem admits a unique feasible solution. Using a Lagrangian relaxation approach similar to F. Kelly et al. (1998) we obtain two decentralized dynamic power control algorithms: primal and dual power update, and establish their global stability utilizing both classical Lyapunov theory and the passivity framework [J.T. Wen and M. Arcak, February 2004]. We show that the robustness results of passivity studies [(X. Fan et al., July 2004), (X. Fan et al., 2004)] as well as most of the stability and robustness analyses of F. Kelly et al. (1998) in the literature are applicable to the power control problem considered. In addition, some of the basic principles of call admission control are investigated from the perspective of the model adopted in this paper. We illustrate the proposed power control schemes through simulations.

This paper presents a low-power, electrostatically-actuated integrated optical filter on an InP MEMS platform. The micromachined filter achieves a resonant wavelength shift of 12nm (1513-1525nm) at a low operating voltage (7V). The filter consists of a half-wavelength long resonant cavity bound by two highly reflective distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) mirrors fabricated by lithography and dry-etching. The filter is integrated monolithically with a doubly-clamped suspended-beam capacitive microactuator and optical waveguides. This paper discusses the fabrication as well as experimental results, showing good agreement between the measured and simulated performance of the filter. The novelty of the device lies in its in-plane MEMS actuation scheme enabling easy integration with other waveguide-based planar integrated optical active and passive components on an InP optoelectronic chip.

In iterative learning control, model uncertainty issue has been studied in various ways. But, in existing works, the model uncertainty has been considered as iteration invariant, that is, it does not change on the iteration axis. Furthermore, in these works, monotone convergence problem has not been properly studied. In this paper, new monotonic convergence condition of iteration varying model uncertain iterative learning control system is derived. So, the main goal of this paper is to guarantee the monotone convergence of the iteration varying model uncertainty system until the tracking error is reduced below the previously calculated base-line error boundary. Through the numerical example, the validity of the suggested method is illustrated.

The Real Time Embedded systems (RTES) project was created to study the design and implementation of high-performance, heterogeneous, and fault-adaptive real time embedded systems. The driving application for this research was the proposed BTeV high energy physics experiment, which called for large farms of embedded computational elements (DSPs), as well as a large farm of conventional high-performance processors to implement its Level 1 and Level 2/3 triggers. At the time of BTeV's termination early in 2005, the RTES project was within days of completing a prototype implementation for providing a reliable and fault-adaptive infrastructure to the L2/3 farm;a prototype for the L1 farm had been completed in 2003. This paper documents the conclusion of the RTES focus on BTeV, and provides an evaluation of the applicability of the RTES concepts to other systems. ©2005 IEEE.

Heterogeneous computing systems composed of interconnected machines with varied computational capabilities often operate in environments where there may be sudden machine failures, higher than expected load, or inaccuracies in estimation of system parameters. Makespan (defined as the completion time for an entire set of tasks) is often the performance feature that is optimized in such systems. It is important that the makespan of a resource allocation (mapping) be robust against errors in task computation time estimates. The problem of optimally mapping tasks onto machines of a heterogeneous computing environment has been shown, in general, to be NP-complete. Therefore, heuristic techniques to find near optimal solutions to this mapping problem are required. The goal of this research is to find a static mapping of tasks so that the robustness of the desired system feature, makespan, is maximized against the errors in task execution time estimates. Seven heuristics to derive near-optimal solutions and an upper bound to this problem are presented and evaluated.

This paper investigates the power MOSFETs high temperature operation from the standpoint of thermal stability. The objective is to identify the electrical and thermal limitations to high temperature and high frequency application of power MOSFETs, and to provide guidelines on how to use them safely and reliably for high temperature operation. Power MOSFETs DC blocking characteristics at high temperatures are studied experimentally and analytically. The loss characteristics including the switching loss, conduction loss, and leakage are tested and analyzed at higher junction temperature. A closed loop thermal system and stability criteria is developed and analyzed. At high switching frequency operation, the switching loss determines the thermal stability. When the junction temperature increases higher, the high leakage current loss can cause thermal instability. From the developed thermal stability system, the maximum witching frequency can be derived for the converter system design. The developed thermal system analysis approach can be extended to other Si devices including IGBT or wideband gap devices such as SiC power MOSFETs.

In this paper we consider cellular networks in which the cells may overlap substantially. Such network architectures, which are motivated by the need to increase the utilization of the available bandwidth by reducing the separation among cells that share the same channel, present new unexplored and fundamental problems. We begin by considering two cells whose assigned user populations overlap spatially, and use a common channel. Consequently, transmissions intended for one base station can cause interference at the other. The interaction between such cells is best exemplified if the protocol of access in each cell is pure random access. For Slotted Aloha, we present a simple mathematical analysis that predicts accurately the maximum achievable throughput. We demonstrate that an invariance (or "self-stabilization") property exists that allows the maximum throughput to occur when the expected total channel traffic in each cell is equal to one packet per slot, independent of the degree of overlap of the cells. We then consider larger multi-cell networks and observe the same invariance property in our simulations. Consequently, in planar cellular networks there are no end effects, and coupling is limited only to adjacent overlapping cells. Thus it is possible to evaluate random access throughput by considering only the local neighborhood of a cell.

This paper presents an efficient video filtering scheme and its implementation in a field-programmable logic device (FPLD). Since the proposed nonlinear, spatiotemporal filtering scheme is based on order statistics, its efficient implementation benefits from a bit-serial realization. The utilization of both the spatial and temporal correlation characteristics of the processed video significantly increases the computational demands on this solution, and thus, implementation becomes a significant challenge. Simulation studies reported in this paper indicate that the proposed pipelined bit-serial FPLD filtering solution can achieve speeds of up to 97.6 Mpixels/s and consumes 1700 to 2700 logic cells for the speed-optimized and area-optimized versions, respectively. Thus, the filter area represents only 6.6 to 10.5% of the Altera STRATIX EP1S25 device available on the Altera Stratix DSP evaluation board, which has been used to implement a prototype of the entire real-time vision system. As such, the proposed adaptive video filtering scheme is both practical and attractive for real-time machine vision and surveillance systems as well as conventional video and multimedia applications.

This paper describes a transmit/receive (T/R) module for a large L-band space based radar active phased array being developed at JPL. electrical performance and construction techniques are described, with emphasis on the former. The T/R modules have a bandwidth of more than 80 MHz centered at 1260 MHz and support dual, switched polarizations. Phase and amplitude are controlled by a 6-bit phase shifter and a 6-bit attenuator, respectively. The transmitter power amplifier generates 2.4 W into a nominal 50 ohm load with 36% overall efficiency. The receiver noise figure is 4.4 dB including all front-end losses. The module weighs 32 g and has a footprint of 10.6 cm /spl times/ 4.8 cm. Fourteen of these T/R modules were fabricated at the JPL pick-and-place facility and were tested using a computer-controlled measurement facility developed at JPL. Calibrated performance of this set of T/R modules is presented and shows good agreement with design predictions.
