computer network data stream used in intrusion detection usually involve many data types. A common data type is that of symbolic or nominal features. Whether being coded into numerical values or not, nominal features need to be treated differently from numeric features. This paper studies the effectiveness of two approaches in handling nominal features: a simple coding scheme via the use of indicator variables and a scaling method based on multiple correspondence analysis (MCA). In particular, we apply the techniques with two anomaly detection methods: the principal component classifier (PCC) and the Canberra metric. The experiments with KDD 1999 data demonstrate that MCA works better than the indicator variable approach for both detection methods with the PCC coming much ahead of the Canberra metric.

Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices are power electronics based shunt or series devices that are connected to the power network and can improve the system performance and the quality of supply. Application of three types of FACTS devices, a STATCOM, a SCRC and a UPFC, is studied in a 45 bus multimachine power system, as part of the Brazilian power system. The system is exposed to various transient and dynamic disturbances, and the performance of the system reinforced with the FACTS devices is compared with the original system. Simulation results are provided that indicate the effectiveness of these FACTS devices in the overall system behaviour

We report for the first time the fatigue study of nanoscale silicon nitride (SiN) thin films using a novel electrostatic actuator. The mechanical-amplifier (MA) devices made in SiN thin films can apply controllable tensile stress (2.0-7.8 GPa) to test structures with relatively low actuation voltages (5.7-35.4 VRMS) at their resonant frequencies. With the recently developed experimental techniques inside a focused-ion-beam (FIB) system, in-situ fatigue measurements are performed on SiN test structures with a linewidth of 200 nm. The SiN test structures are found to exhibit time-delayed failures with a continuous increase in their compliance. By reducing the applied tensile stress to 3.8 GPa, the test structures can survive cyclic loadings up to 10 cycles.

Design issues of high power density transformers for resonant converter systems are discussed. Under the specified operating condition, the transformer is designed to achieve the minimum volume. Finemet/sup /spl reg// nanocrystalline magnetic material is suitable for the pulse applications, due to its superior low loss density and high operating temperature characteristics. 1000 W/in/sup 3/ power density is achieved for the 30 kW pulse operation converter. Based on an energy-based approach, lumped-component transformer equivalent circuit is developed, with leakage inductances and winding capacitances calculated according to certain transformer geometry. The analysis has been verified by the experimental results.

We present advances in microwave and RF device modeling exploiting space mapping (SM) technology. We propose new SM modeling formulations utilizing input mappings, output mappings, frequency scaling and quadratic approximations. Our aim is to enhance circuit models for statistical analysis and yield-driven design. We illustrate our results using a capacitively-loaded two-section impedance transformer, a single-resonator waveguide filter and a six-section H-plane waveguide filter.

A systematic methodology for generating multi-folded torus chaotic attractors from a simple three-dimensional piecewise-linear system is presented in this paper. Theoretical analysis shows that multi-folded torus chaotic attractors can be created via alternative switching between two piecewise-linear systems. A novel circuit diagram is designed for physically creating multi-folded torus chaotic attractors. This is the first time in the literature to experimentally verify a maximum 9-folded torus chaotic attractor that is generated by an analog circuit.

Monitoring of environmental phenomena with embedded networked sensing confronts the challenges of both unpredictable variability in the spatial distribution of phenomena coupled with the demands for a high spatial sampling rate in three dimensions. For example, low distortion mapping of critical solar radiation properties in forest environments may require two-dimensional spatial sampling rates of greater than 10 samples/m/sup 2/ over transects exceeding 1000 m/sup 2/. Clearly, adequate sampling coverage of such transect requires an impractically large number of sensing nodes. A new approach, networked infomechanical system (NIMS), has been introduced to combine autonomous-articulated and static sensor nodes enabling sufficient spatiotemporal sampling density over large transects to meet a general set of environmental mapping demands. This paper describes our work on the critical parts of NIMS, the task allocation module. We present our methodologies and the two basic greedy task allocation policies - based on time of the task arrival (time policy) and distance from the robot to the task (distance policy). We present results from NIMS deployed in a forest reserve and from a lab testbed. The results show that both policies are adequate for the task of spatiotemporal sampling, but also complement each other. Finally, we suggest the future direction of research that would both help us better quantify the performance of our system and create more complex policies.

The paper presents a reduced-delay selective-ARQ scheme based on a similarity check function that measures the degree of corruption in transmitted multimedia data packets. Accordingly, if the packet is found to be badly corrupted based on a specified similarity criterion, it can be considered as a lost packet and retransmitted. The degree of corruption contributed by a particular packet is measured by the proposed similarity check function at the receiver without explicit knowledge of the original source data. Simulation results and comparisons with a conventional ARQ scheme are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.

Most studies of wireless random-access systems have addressed single-destination networks (e.g., an isolated base station in a cellular network). Here, we consider networks with many users and multiple destinations, where omnidirectional antennas are used for communication over a common channel, and transmissions intended for one destination can interfere with those intended for others. Our previous work on such networks assumed a simplified model for the physical layer, under which communication and interference ranges were characterized by fixed values and capture was not possible. In this paper, we use a more-realistic threshold model for the physical layer, under which a packet is successfully received if its received signal strength is sufficiently greater than the combined power of all other packets transmitted in the same slot. We use simulation to evaluate the maximum throughput that can be achieved by Slotted Aloha for multiple-destination networks.
