The problem of parallel and distributed function optimization is considered. Two coevolutionary algorithms with different degrees of parallelism and different levels of a global coordination are used for this purpose and compared with sequential genetic algorithm (GA). The first coevolutionary algorithm called a loosely coupled genetic algorithm (LCGA) represents a competitive coevolutionary approach to problem solving and is compared with another coevolutionary algoritm called cooperative coevolutionary genetic algorithm (CCGA). The algorithms are applied for parallel and distributed optimization of a number of test functions known in the area of evolutionary computation. We show that both coevolutionary algorithms outperform a sequential GA. While both LCGA and CCGA algorithms offer high quality solutions, they may compete to outperform each other in some specific test optimization problems. The LCGA may be recommended to be used in optimization systems when high degree of parallelism is possible and non global coordination is expected while the CCGA algorithm is useful when low degree of parallelism and global coordination is acceptable. © 2002 IEEE.

The paper reports new results on developing parallel algorithms for multiprocessor scheduling with use of cellular automata (CAs). The simpliest case when a multiprocessor system is limited to two processors, but without of any limitations on a size and parameters of parallel programs is considered. An approach called a selected neighborhood is used to design a structure of CAs for a given program graph. Co evolutionary genetic algorithm (GA) to discover rules of parallel CAs, suitable for solving the scheduling problem is proposed. Sequential and parallel scheduling algorithms discovered in the context of CAs - based scheduling system are compared. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Various mine detection techniques are reviewed with particular emphasis on signal and image processing methods. Based on the target, mines are classified into two types; anti-tank mine (ATM) and anti-personnel mine (APM). Because of the variety of mine types, current mine detection techniques are diversified. The assumption is made that most mine detection techniques consist of sensor, signal processing, and decision processes. For the sensor part, ground penetration radar (GPR), infrared (IR), and ultrasound (US) sensors are reviewed and their characteristics are summarized for the corresponding output signals. For the signal processing and decision parts, a set of image processing techniques including filtering, enhancement, feature extraction, and segmentation are surveyed. Segmentation is used to extract mine signal from various competing signals. For most image processing techniques covered by this paper, mine detection related experimental results are included or reproduced from existing works.

LIVELY graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in applied mathematics and an MS in mathematics in 1976 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MS in electrical engineering and the degree ocean engineer in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1984. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 after 23 years of service. Assignments included electrical officer on the USS Constellation (CV 64) project engineer for the DDG 51 machinery control system (NAVSEA) and DDG 51 Technical Director (NAVSEA). He was vice president of the PDI Division of Bird-Johnson Company from July 1989 to November 1998 where he managed various gas turbine and machinery controls related development projects. He joined Anteon Corporation's Systems Engineering Group as senior controls engineer in December 1998 where he provided technical support to the integrated power systems program (NAVSEA PMS 510) and managed the Office of Naval Research Afloat Laboratory. DR. MARK KIRKPATRICK is currently an independent consultant in human factors and work-load/manning analysis and modeling. He holds a Ph.D. degree in experimental psychology from The Ohio State University and has 34 years of experience in applied human factors. From 1982 through 2000 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as the senior vice president of Carlow International. Prior to joining Carlow in 1982 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as a member of the technical staff at North American Rockwell's Missiles Division and as a project director and vice president for Essex Corporation. His areas of expertise include workload simulation task analysis operator-in-the-loop simulation human performance experimentation statistical analysis and human factors T&E. Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. Development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.

Adaptive Quality-of-Service management is critical for enabling effective collaboration between distributed clients in a heterogeneous (wired and wireless) environment. This is because both client profiles (capabilities, interests and resources) and system resources can be significantly different and highly dynamic. This paper presents the design and prototype implementation of an adaptive QoS management framework for collaborative multimedia applications in distributed, heterogeneous environments. The overall goal of the framework is to locally adapt the shared information to meet the capabilities, interests and current state of each collaborating client while preserving the semantic content of the information to maintain effective sharing. Transformations investigated in this paper include gradual gradations and modality transformations. The framework builds on a publisher-subscriber messaging substrate that uses semantic profiles and provides each client with direct and immediate access to all information defined by its needs and capabilities, without having to maintain and update global rosters. It interfaces with the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to determine the state of the network by directly querying network elements. An experimental evaluation of the framework for wired and wireless clients is also presented. © 2002 IEEE.

This paper proposes a novel real-time adaptive admission control (AAC) scheme with a desired quality of service (QoS) guarantee and high network utilization in high speed networks. The QoS is given in terms of service delay, which is defined as the time it takes for a source to get admitted into the network after it initiates its intended request, packet/cell losses, and transmission delay (time taken to complete transmission from its initiation). AAC uses the following information - the available capacity from a novel adaptive bandwidth estimation scheme, a congestion indicator derived from a congestion controller, peak cell rate estimate from new sources, along with the desired QoS metrics, and outputs an 'admit' or 'reject' decision signal to the new sources while guaranteeing QoS and network utilization. Simulation results are presented by streaming ON/OFF and video data into the network. Results show that the proposed AAC admits significantly more traffic compared to other available admission control schemes thereby guaranteeing high network utilization while maintaining the desired QoS.

In any measuring system the categorization of the error generation factors leads to simplification of complex error problems and to higher suppression of the error. In this paper we categorize, quantify and analyze the errors that affect a binocular active vision head. Simulations have been made and experimental results on a high resolution pan-tilt-vergence mechanism are also proposed. As a conclusion it can be said that the system performs optimal when it is initialized so that the two cameras are perfectly aligned and perpendicular to the baseline. Small variations in the vergence angle or small horizontal deviations of the principal point alters the measurement dramatically. On the other hand, variations in pan and tilt and vertical deviations of the principal point, affect the measurement insignificantly. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

This paper presents the design and evaluation of an adaptive system sensitive partitioning and load balancing framework for distributed adaptive mesh refinement applications on heterogeneous and dynamic cluster environments. The framework uses system capabilities and current system state to select and tune appropriate partitioning parameters (e.g., partitioning granularity, load per processor) to maximize overall application performance. Furthermore, it uses dynamic load sensing (using NWS) to adapt to the load dynamics in the cluster.

We present two classes of distributed algorithms called DRBA and DOBA, for decentralized, proactive resource allocation in asynchronous real-time distributed systems. The objective of the algorithms is to maximize aggregate application benefit and deadline-satisfied ratio for a user-specified future time interval. Since determining the optimal allocation is computationally intractable, the algorithms heuristically compute near-optimal allocations in polynomial-time. While the DRBA algorithms analyze subtask response times to determine allocation decisions which are computationally expensive, the DOBA algorithms analyze processor overloads to compute their decisions in a much faster way. Within each class, we present three algorithms that differ in the way they tolerate end-host failures: no reallocation upon failure, stateless reallocation, and stateful reallocation.

Color provides a wealth of information for interpretation of image content. The increased availability of affordable digital color cameras has created the opportunity to explore the degree to which color is useful in computer vision. This paper shows that a system for image segmentation and classification can be created using color as the primary feature. This system is comprised of two phases: segmentation and classification. In the first step, an image is searched with a blob detection algorithm to determine the location of any possible foreground elements. These areas are extracted from the image to be used in the next step. Classification is done using a set of eight color features that are optimally selected for each database. The appropriate feature vector is created for each foreground area removed from the original image. The vector is then compared to a preconstructed database to be identified. For this paper USA postage stamps on envelopes were used as the test cases.
