Summary form only given. Permanent magnet machines are being considered for use in electric ships as pumps and drives. The exterior fields of these machines are of concern. These fields decay at a rate that depends on the number of poles, fields from higher number of poles decaying more rapidly. If there is an imbalance in the set of poles, the lower order decay of the unbalanced poles dominate in the far field and the advantage of using a high number of poles could be lost.

For multilayer-dielectric-multilayer (MDM) amplifying Fabry-Perot microinterferometer analysis an advanced method of single expression (MSE) is applied. The distinctive feature of the method is a presentation of the Helmholtz's equation solution in each layer of a structure in the special form of a single expression. The electrodynamical problem of plane wave interaction with MDM Fabry-Perot structure is solved. The electric field amplitude distribution within and outside of the structure is obtained. The field localization at the resonance state is observed. Including amplification in the dielectric space between multilayer mirrors brings to the transformation of the microinterferometer's transmission peaks to the amplified ones.

In CELP coding, signal modification is often employed to improve the pitch prediction at lowest bit rates. In this paper, a signal modification method for coding purely voiced wideband speech frames is introduced. The modification is performed frame and pitch synchronously preserving the original time scale at the end of each frame, which makes the method particularly convenient for variable bit rate coding. Special attention is paid to modify only the frames which are most suitable for the signal modification and low bit rate coding. The signal modification method is applied to a variable bit rate ACELP coder that satisfies IS-95/CDMA2000 rate-set II system requirements.

The paper discusses state space blind source recovery (BSR) for minimum phase and non-minimum phase mixtures of Gaussian and non-Gaussian distributions. The state space natural gradient approach results in compact iterative update laws for BSR. Two separate state space algorithms for minimum phase and non-minimum phase mixing environments are presented. The advantages and disadvantages of both algorithms in the context of multiple source distribution mixtures are examined. The presented BSR algorithms require use of nonlinearities, which depend on the distribution of the unknown sources. We propose use of an adaptive nonlinearity based on the batch kurtosis of the output. This renders the adaptive estimation of the demixing network completely blind.

We show that pilot symbol assisted modulation (PSAM) schemes can be improved by adapting the coded modulation strategy at the sender to the quality of the channel measurement at the receiver, without requiring any channel feedback from the receiver. The transmitter employs interleaved codes, with data symbols coded according to their distance from the nearest pilot symbols. The performance benefits from this approach are quantified in the context of binary signaling over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels described by a Gauss-Markov model. The spacing of the pilot symbols is optimized to maximize the mutual information between input and output in the preceding setting. Causal and non-causal channel estimators of varying complexity and delay are considered. It is shown that, by appropriate optimization for the spacing between consecutive pilot symbols, the adaptive coding techniques proposed can yield up to 30% improvement in achievable rate, without any feedback from the receiver to the sender.

In this paper, we present a MAC-layer packet scheduling algorithm, called BPA, for real-time switched Ethernet networks. BPA considers a message model where trans-node application-level messages have end-to-end timeliness requirements that are specified using Jensen's benefit functions. The objective of BPA is to maximize the aggregate message-level benefit. The algorithm reasons that this objective can be achieved by maximizing aggregate packet-level benefit, where packets of messages are allowed to inherit benefit functions of their parent messages. BPA thus solves a non-preemptive packet scheduling problem. Since this problem is NP-hard, BPA heuristically computes packet schedules to maximize aggregate benefit, incurring a worst-case computational complexity of O(n/sup 2/). This is better than the O(n/sup 3/) complexity of the previously known best algorithm (called CMA) for the same problem. Further, our experimental studies show that BPA performs as good as CMA for a broad set of benefit functions, and significantly outperforms CMA for some benefit functions. Furthermore, we observe that BPA yields lower missed-deadline ratio than CMA when message arrival density increases.

We present a Built-In Self-Test (BIST)-based diagnostic approach for the programmable interconnect resources in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) that can be used for either on-line or off-line testing. The technique was originally intended for on-line diagnosis of faulty interconnect to support fault-tolerant applications. However, the technique has been proven to be an excellent approach for off-line testing and diagnosis as well, providing high-resolution diagnostics with the ability to identify the faulty wire segment or programmable switch. We have implemented this BIST-based diagnostic approach on the ORCA series FPGA and present the results of testing and diagnosing known defective FPGAs.

A design procedure for the consequent pole permanent magnet (CPPM) machine is presented. Due to its double excitation nature (PM and field winding) and inherent three-dimensional flux distribution, an appropriate set of equations must be derived to model its magnetic structure. For practical operating conditions, radial, axial and tangential flux components are present. Therefore a convenient representation of the magnetic sources and their magnetic paths are necessary. For this purpose, a simplified reluctance-based equivalent circuit for 2-poles is developed to capture the main features of the machine. Approximated expressions for the airgap flux and the airgap flux density are derived. In these expressions the constant contribution of the PM and the variable flux provided by the field winding are taken into account. In addition, a formulation to calculate AC and DC slot geometry, copper and iron losses estimation and output power are developed. Finally, an optimization procedure is outlined based on maximum material utilization under current and magnetic loading constraints.

In this work, we consider assessing wavelength availability using partial management information for dynamically setting up a light-path across administrative domains. We cast the light-path assessment as a decision problem, define and analyze the performance as the probability of an erroneous decision. We show that the performance is related to the blocking probability, and a good performance may be achieved using local and aggregated information.
