Mapping transparency through metaphor: Towards more expressive musical instruments

We define a two-axis transparency framework that can be used as a predictor of the expressivity of a musical device. One axis is the player's transparency scale, while the other is the audience's transparency scale. Through consideration of both traditional instruments and new technology-driven interfaces, we explore the role that metaphor plays in developing expressive devices. Metaphor depends on a literature, which forms the basis for making transparent device mappings. We examine four examples of systems that use metaphor: Iamascope, Sound Sculpting, MetaMuse and Glove-TalkII;and discuss implications on transparency and expressivity. We believe this theory provides a framework for design and evaluation of new human–machine and human–human interactions, including musical instruments. © 2002, Cambridge University Press. ROBUST CONGESTION CONTROL IN HIGH SPEED COMMUNICATION NETWORKS: A MODEL PREDICTIVE CONTROL APPROACH

In this paper, the design of explicit rate-based congestion control in high speed communication networks is considered. At a bottleneck node, there are multiple best-effort sources competing with other high priority cross traffic sources. The goal of congestion control is to achieve high link utilization, low packet loss, low delay, and fairness among the best-effort sources. In this paper, the high priority traffic is described by an autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) process. To deal with the propagation delays associated with the best-effort sources, model predictive control, particularly, generalized predictive control, techniques are proposed to solve the congestion problem here. It is demonstrated that the proposed controller performs well and is robust to delay uncertainties. In addition, in a multiple-nodes configuration, the controller provides max-min fairness.

We describe our work on the development of Language and Evaluation Resources for the evaluation of summaries in English and Chinese. The language resources include a parallel corpus of English and Chinese texts which are translations of each other, a set of queries in both languages, clusters of documents relevants to each query, sentence relevance measures for each sentence in the document clusters, and manual multi-document summaries at different compression rates. The evaluation resources consist of metrics for measuring the content of automatic summaries against reference summaries. The framework can be used in the evaluation of extractive, non-extractive, single and multi-document summarization. We focus on the resources developed that are made available for the research community.

Linear-phase lowpass filters are often used as a preprocessing step in signal processing applications to eliminate high frequency components of noise that do not overlap with the signal spectrum. Signals with sharp peaks confound this type of noise reduction because sharp peaks have a broad spectrum and are significantly attenuated by lowpass filters. This paper describes a simple method that restores the signal peaks to their full amplitude by adding a filtered estimate of the peak residuals to the original lowpass filter output. Examples are given of the nonlinear filter applied to a Poisson process, an electrocardiogram, and an extracellular microelectrode recording of neuron action potentials.

Cooperation in learning improves the speed of convergence and the quality of learning. Special care is needed when heterogeneous agents cooperate in learning. It is discussed that, cooperation in learning may cause the learning process to diverge if heterogeneity is not handled properly. In this paper, it is assumed that two heterogeneous Q-learning agents cooperate to learn. The heterogeneity is assumed in their action order (and not in their action set). A Q-learning-based method is introduced for the agents to learn the mapping among their actions. It is shown that, the agents are able to learn this mapping while cooperating in learning. Some simulation results are reported to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Q-learning is widely used in many multi agent systems. In most cases, a separate critic is considered for qualifying each individual agent behavior or it is assumed that the critic is completely aware of effects of all agents' actions on the team qualification. But, in many cases, the role of each team member in the group performance is not known. In order to distribute a common credit among the agents, a suitable criterion must be provided to estimate the role of each agent in the team performance and to judge if an agent has done a wrong action. In this paper two such criteria, named certainty and expertness, for a team of agents with parallel tasks are introduced. In addition, two methods for reinforcing the agents based on the proposed measures are provided. Some simulation results are also reported to show the effectiveness of the proposed measures and methods.

We investigate strategies for guidance-level reconfiguration following changes in aircraft closed-loop dynamics. The guidance model for the vehicle under study is a maneuver automaton. We propose reconfiguration methods to handle changes in such vehicle dynamics using the Guidance Value Function that emerges from the solution to the underlying optimal trajectory generation problem. We illustrate our approach on a numerical example. © 2002 by the author(s). Published by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc.

Ice accretion affects the performance and control of an aircraft and in extreme situations can lead to incidents and accidents. However, changes in performance and control are difficult to sense. As a result, the icing sensors currently in use sense primarily ice accretion, not the effect of the ice. No processed aircraft performance degradation information is available to the pilot. In this paper, the Smart Icing System research program is reviewed and progress towards its development reported. Such a system would sense ice accretion through traditional icing sensors and use modern system identification methods to estimate aircraft performance and control changes. This information would be used to automatically operate ice protection systems, provide aircraft envelope protection and, if icing was severe, adapt the flight controls. All of this would be properly communicated to and coordinated with the flight crew. In addition to describing the basic concept, this paper reviews the research conducted to date in three critical areas;aerodynamics and flight mechanics, aircraft control and identification, and human factors. In addition, the flight simulation development is reviewed, as well as the Twin Otter flight test program that is being conducted in cooperation with NASA Glenn Research Center. © 2002 by M. B. A behavioral, SPICE compatible, model was developed for an electrodeless fluorescent lamp (OSRAM SYLVANIA ICETRON/ENDURA 150W). The model emulates the static and dynamic behavior of the lamp when driven at high frequency. The model was tested under various experimental conditions: at steady state for different power levels, with an AM modulated drive, and under transient changes. Good agreement was found between the simulation runs and experimental results. However, the effect of temperature on the lamp's behavior may require a tighter fit of the model to the temperature dependence in cases where large changes in operating condition need to be simulated.

In today's power electronics modules, power semiconductor devices are interconnected via wire bonds, causing large parasitic noises due to the long interconnection path. Over the last few years, we have been developing a thick-film planar interconnect technique to enable the construction of three-dimensional integrated power electronics modules (IPEM); we call this technique Embedded Power. The Embedded Power module is built by mounting power devices in the openings of a ceramic substrate followed by printing a polymer dielectric isolation layer and vapor-depositing multilayer metallic thin films for the construction of a three-dimensional package. Evidence shows that compared with the conventional wire-bonded modules, power modules made by using Embedded Power technology have lower parasitic noises due to its integrated, multilayer design. Since power density in the Embedded Power module is increased, its thermal management needs to be examined to assure it meets all the thermal requirements. In this paper, the thermal performance of this IPEM has been studied both experimentally and numerically and preliminary results are reported here. A finite difference-based thermal solver is used to simulate the beat transfer in the IPEM. The modeling prediction on the IPEM is verified with inserted thermocouples.
